in the 2016 campaign, russian hackers used phishing e-mails to get into the dnc and access e-mails.eporters on the story nbc's national political reporter josh letterman joins me now. talk to me about this. what's happening? >> reporter: well, this is a really broad effort, ali, by the national security agencies going on for months to try to get the campaigns in better shape to defend themselves so the department of homeland security is running campaigns where they basically conduct fake hacking attacks against these campaigns to see if they can identify places that they don't have secure communications, secure situations and can fix that. the fbi had the local field offices working with campaigns and headquarters around the country both on physical security and on cyber security. the campaigns have been getting briefed by office of director after national intelligence. >> i would assume that the trump campaign or anybody else running against donald trump gets the same information, right? >> reporter: well, what's interesting, ali srks that there's limitations because the government

. >> well, of course what we saw in 2016 was those phishing attacks where you click a link on an emailhey can gain access to your pass word and accounts. that continues to be a concern for all the campaigns but that's not the only thing these campaigns are being informed of. one big concern is these deep fakes, the possibility that you take a phone call or you get a voice message from somebody that you think is on your campaign team or somebody you're reaching out to on the democratic side and it turns out it's not them. so they're working on them on multi-factor authentication not just of email accounts, but developing systems to make sure you can verify these kinds of conversations are with those you expect them to be. one em pedestrianment to the kind of outreach we've been seeing is that the federal law enforcement agencies can only be so helpful because they can only tell these campaigns non-secret, non-classified information. a lot of these campaigns, if not all of them, they lack any officials on these campaigns who have classified access or security clearances, so they can only
