ali velshi. ali, it is a lot. >> yeah, and what i have difficulty with is the idea that there is this allegation that everything is behind closed doors, there is no evidence. but what just read is all public domain stuff. right? you don't have to be in a closed door meeting. we're not there, rewe're not hearing it, but the stuff that we do know about is enough to cause a normal person to think that there might be something amiss with the president and rudy giuliani's dealings in ukraine. >> let's just say i'm not a normal person but i am a person who follows the facts. lij lindsey graham just said that it is plea fosterrous that bill taylor, career diplomat, a guy who came out of retirement as per mike pompeo's request, he gives a 15 page testimony and lindsey graham are says it is completely untested. there was no chance for cross-examinatio cross-examination. reminder, it was not a room full of just democrats. there are 47 republicans in the room who are welcome to ask whatever the heck they want. >> yes. the impression that you are left with is that it is democrats in a room privately taking these depositions. and that is not the case. >> there are a lot of democrats and they have the majority, but there are also republicans. >> all right. coming up next, the push to get attorney general bill barr to recuse himself from the impeachment inquiry. we'll explain why. and talk about his role in the ukraine matter. >>> plus, new polls show -- what new polls show about how americans are feeling about impeachment. >>> but today congress is honoring the late elijah cummings, his body is lying in state. he is the first african-american lawmaker to it lie in state at the u.s. capitol. soon members. public will pay their respects. earlier lawmakers including 123eer 123 speaker pelosi and congressman meadows paid tribute to cummings. >> elijah was truly a master of the house. he respected its history and in it he helped shape america's future. i have called him our northstar, our guide to a better future. thank you, elijah, on behalf of the fult of oture of our childr america, to be true to our beliefs. we say this to you as we are gathered here today in the old house chamber where lincoln served. >> for me i was privileged enough to be able to call him a dear friend. some have class filed ified it unexpected friend ship, but for those of us who though elijah, it is not unexpected or are surprising. he is defined by the character of his heart, the honesty of his dialogue and the man that -- the man that we will miss. >> chairman cummings was integral to the impeachment inquiry. and here he is in august at the national press sclclub hear in washington. >> i'm reminded of a conversation that i had with my 10-year-old niece this weekend. she said uncle elijah, are they going to put us in cages? are they going to put us in cages? that is coming from a 10-year-old. we're better than that. we must stand together with those who we do not look like, with those who we disagree with, and recognize that we have more in common than we have that separates us. i bet you lunch you can't make it in there. i'm thinkin' sushi. alexa, ask buick to start my suv. you can do that? you can do that? you can do that? yeah, with a buick. what? at the heart of every buick suv... is you. or current eligible non-gm owners get 14 to 20 percent below msrp on most of these buick models. goldi knows to never compromise. too shabby! too much! too perfect! i can rent this? for that price? absolutely. what is this, some kind of fairy tale? it's just right! book your just right rental at thrifty.com. oh! baby bear! >>> as the impeachment inquiry intensifies on capitol hill, there are new calls for u.s. attorney general bill barr to recuse himself from any justice department review of the ukraine matter. now, the new york city bar with association says if barr doesn't recuse himself, he should resign or be sanctioned because the ag's name keeps coming up in the investigation. according to a white house memo of that now infamous july 25th phone call, president trump references bill barr five times including in this exchange. president trump tells president zelensky that he wants him to look into joe die debiden and h and says whatever you can do with the attorney general would be great. so that same phone call, president trump says that he will have his personal lawyer rudy giuliani give -- sorry, did i skip one? all right. give zelensky a call and i'm also going to have attorney general barr call and we can get to the bottom of it. just last week in this bombshell press conference, mick mulvaney suggesting that it was legitimate to ask ukraine to participate in and ongoing investigation by the justice department. likely a reference to the legitimacy of the origins of the russia investigation conducted by john durham. and on tuesday, the top u.s. diplomat in ukraine, bill taylor, told lawmakers that he and eu ambassador sondland discussed the possibility that the ukranian prosecutor general rather than president zelensky would make a statement about investigations potentially in coordination with attorney general barr's probe into the investigation of interference into the 2016 elections. joining me now from the "washington post" blog, greg sergeant, he wrote a piece called an overlooked bill taylor revelation hints at worse to come from trump. and also former u.s. attorney joyce vance. joyce, the department of justice has a unique role in safe guarding the rule of law under the constitution. by failing to recuse position from review of the ukraine matter, attorney general william barr has undermined that role. we didn't know if barr actually did anything wrong, that is not the allegation. but it is clear that he is involved in the thing that the department of justice would be reviewing. what is your thought? >> so many of the ethical issue in situations like that that prosecutors struggle with involve the community or the country's perception of doj's integrity as much as an actual conflict. so i think that you are right to point out there is no evidence one way or the other right now that helps us understand what barr's ultimate role in this situation was. but because people will be left with questions if he continues to participate into any sort of criminal investigation in this area whether of rudy giuliani or anyone else, it it is imperati that he recuse. and this sort of statement from a bar association is very unusual. i can't recall another bar association calling for an attorney general of the united states to recuse. it does come from the new york city barb, n, not the state bars would ultimately have some sort of responsibility for discussing bill barr's bar membership if he in fact is a member of the new york bar. i don't know complain. but this is an unusual moment. >> and i want to make a referenceplain. but this is an unusual moment. >> and i want to make a reference to the piece you made. what is the overlooked part of his revelation? >> well, in the testimony, in the opening statements, taylor said explicitly that sondland told him during a conversation that they had a conversation about the possibility of potentially making a public statement -- that the ukranians would make a public statement declaring the investigations that trump wanted which question all know are completely political and sham investigations, and said something along the lines of this could be done in conjunction with bill barr's review of the origins of the russia investigation into what happened in 2016. now, we don't know much more than that because we don't really know whether they would make a joint statement or whether the investigations would be fused in some sense. but the key point here is that two senior u.s. officials were talking about the attorney general of the united states in some form or other lending his legitimacy or validating in sham investigation by ukraine that trump was pushing for. now, barr wants his review of the origins of the russia probe to be seen as apolitical and legitimate, but we keep seeing hill pop him pop up in the scheme. and you would think that the justice department would make a much more forceful and clear statement about the fact that, you know, about this effort to use barr and the justice department's review. but we don't hear that much from them and that is because we don't really though whether there is that -- what the overlap is. i think we need to know more. >> that is a good point you make. joyce, whether or not the justice department or anybody has a position that bill barr doesn't need to recuse position or it is not bill barr's fault the president talked about him on this phone call, whatever the case is, there is a question and many times when people recuse themselves from something in a legal setting, it is not that there is wrongdoing, it is that there is a perception that something may not be fair. >> that is exactly right. and what the attorney general owes the country at a minimum is an explanation for why he continues to be involved. for instance, this entire extremely unusual investigation where doj is putting its resources again in trying to resuscitate this debunked myth that ukraine rather than russia played a role in the 2016 election, we know that barr has been traveling around the world putting an awful lot of attention for an attorney general into a matter like that. there is plenty of reason to believe that he should step away, that he should recuse. he of course led the department that failed to open a criminal investigation into the whistleblower's complaint. and we now see that there is plenty of potential criminal content to that complaint which likely warranted merited investigation by doj. so bar r at a minimum should gie us xan mexplanation but certain should consider recusing. >> two senators wrote an op-ed in which it says if called upon to hold another presidential impeachment trial, we hope senators of both parties will put aside partisan considerations and approach the task with the same spirit of fairness that served the institution of the senate and the country so well decades ago. it is not unusual that people watching this might say that is not likely to happen. >> well, i think we're seeing today a very clear indication that that is extremely unlikely to happen. i believe just moments ago the news broke that lindsey graham is going to introduce some sort house impeachment probe for its closed door nature. i think our only hope is that mitch mcconnell feels that the senators facing tough re-election battles need to be associated with some sort of process that has at least the appearance of legitimacy. that may be our only way that we might get something of a reasonable process. but otherwise i would think that we should be pretty pessimistic that they do anything even remotely fair. >> greg sergeant and joyce vance, thank you. >>> up next, a new poll in the race for the democratic nomination might not support the narrative coming out of the last debate. steve today, ohio democratic congressman tim ryan has officially ended his presidential campaign after months of struggling to break out from the crowded field. he thanked supports and said that he would instead seek re-election for his house seat. and meanwhile elizabeth warren has opened up a new lead in the democratic primary. according to the latest quinnipiac pole, it shows her at 28% with joe biden behind her at 21%. and bernie sanders at 15%. warren has steadied her lead and support for the impeachment inquiry of her potential opponent president trump has grown to 55%. that is a four point increase since october 14. joining me now, the king of the big board, steve core that can kornacki and also jonathan capehart. steve, biggest takeaways.that c kornacki and also jonathan capehart. steve, biggest takeaways. >> you mentioned quinnipiac, the newest one out this morning. this is by far the best post-debate poll that elizabeth warren has gotten, accept point le seven point lead for her. and the other one, this counts for debate qualifying.point seven point lead for her. and the other one, this counts for debate qualifying. amy klobuchar, that is the magic number for her, she will thousand qualify. she will thousand qualify for the next debate. that is the one coming up here on msnbc in a couple weeks. now, this one may look good for warren but keep in mind about 24 hours ago we were all talking about a different brand new poll that was by cnn, radically different result. from warren up by seven, to warren down by 15 in this one. again, this also a post-debate poll. biden here 34%. this is the best he's seen since that debate. sanders you see there in the mid teens. buttigieg, the rest of them. when you start seeing polls that are all over the place like this, do i believe this one, do i believe that one? average them all together, so take a look if you look at the current polling average all the different polls out there on the democratic side, here is what it looks like. biden about a 5 1/2 point lead over warren for second, sanders in third. suggests a couple things. obviously, biden, stability. there was a lot of questions going into that debate, could he give a bad performance. but seems to have stability at least for now. and warren, is she reaching a plateau? we will see. and again sanders, there were all those questions heading into the debate after his health scare, but he seems to be steady as well. so some interesting story lines. but that is the average, and i think that is the one that i'd look at. >> and there is another interesting part of the story line that stuck out to me. in the quinnipiac poll, even though warren is leading, joe biden scores significantly higher as the democrat most likely to defeat president trump. look at that. biden at 42%, warren at 20%. what do you make of that discrepancy? >> well, the discrepancy is what we've been seeing from the moment vice president biden got into the race. and that is people look at joe biden as the person who they think can beat president trump. and also the reason why vice president biden is so steady and stable is i think the word steve used in this race is the super strong support he has among african-americans. and african-americans want to back someone who they think is going to win. so unless and until elizabeth warren is able to pull away african-american voters en masse is the word i'm thinking of, her numbers are not going to go -- are not going to go higher than we see. i think it was the cnn poll you were talking about temperature and when it comes to that cnn poll, the one thing that bothers me about that pollure and when it comes to that cnn poll, the one thing that bothers me about that poll is the margin of error. 5.8%. and i don't remember much from my statistics class bei clas cl margin of error, you should look at it with a lot of skepticism and that is why i think that the quinnipiac poll and to steve's point averaging all of these polls is really the way to look at all of this. >> and also pete buttigieg are has a piece out in the "usa today" where he is now saying as president he would it nominate at least 50% women to his cabinet and judiciary. what do you make of that? >> look, that is a great pledge to have. it is not like there aren't qualified women for it a president's cabinet or for the judiciary. what has always been lacking is leadership to actually do it. and get it done. and, you know, if i'm pete buttigieg and i become president of the united states and i have that >> well, she prefers to reframe the whole topic and talk about costs, which i think if there were not a lot of democrats attacking her, she were the nominee against trump, they'd let her get away from that. there is a separate white paper with a bunch of pay fors, different taxes, different options. even when bernie sanders says i'm willing to raise tax, you can't pull out a card and say how much will people be saying. she talks about it as a framework. she puts out a decision that looks awkward to say i'm not engaging on the tax question. i don't want a clip of me fall on the tax question. if you pay $2,000 in a premium, you pay $2,000, $100 in taxes, do ira iz your taxes? >> does she risk looking like another politician or refuses to say things bluntly? >> she risks that. i don't think connected apart from some exchanges with pete buttigieg yesterday. the mystery of these democratic debates is voters so far have been really resisted to praising a candidate that went negative. they have not been awarded. julian castro was praised when he went negative, there has not been a candidate who went negative in a sustained way and voters said, great, i like that. they like to see are you tough enough to take on donald trump in different ways in the exthanks, warren looked like somebody that could take on trump and bute dpig with a different strategy looked like he could take on trump. >> some of the strategy looking who can take on elizabeth warren when it comes down to the stretch, if it is hers as the nominee. by taking the gloves off or nost touching joe biden during the debate and not focusing so much on him, focusing on her, instead, are we seeing a line of democrats who are basically saying i want to step into the more moderate, the more realistic role going forward if joe biden doesn't last as long as people thought he might have? >> reporter: yes. and we've seen jockeying in that lane for the entirety of this primary. but i think the perk for a lot of the moderates, really, you'd call the people in the moderate lane. the people like amy clone char and pete buttigieg who are really launching a lot of those attacks. they were people that needed new moments, especially amy klobuchar who has not qualified for that debate. it was sort of kiss mat in a way elizabeth warren is the one in the front runner position, center stage. it allows someone like amy klobuchar who has long said he wants to be a pragmatist and contrast and talks about big structural change. so clearly that was something amy klobuchar and several others on the debate stage felt comfortable highlighting yesterday. if biden is not getting the speaking time there maybe they could emerge in the minds of voters as someone to take up that moderate lane and voters found they weren't missing biden's word on the debate stage last night. >> we'll see if what happened last night on the debate stage translates into enthusiasm down on the ground, which these candidates that aren't polling really well, they need to excite voters when the pollsters give them a call. guys, thank you very much. >>> senator tammy duckworth says the president's decisions around turkey and syria show its quote incompetence has fatal consequences. she'll join me coming up. >>> first another man is in custody in the campaign finance investigation involving rudy guiliani's associates. where does that leave rudy guiliani? >> so, katy, basically all the other people involved in this case are the two people that we have been speaking most about because they're the ones associated with rudy guiliani and they're people that rudy is their attorney or at least they are a client of rudy guiliani as he puts it. so we have been speaking a lot about that. there were two people indicted along with them. one is david correia you pointed out was arrested at new york's jfk airport, he was coming into jfk. we expect him to make a first appearance in federal court downtown in lower manhattan here this afternoon perhaps in the next hour or to. it's a cursory first appearance. tomorrow he will be the arraignment still unclear as to out players arraigned tomorrow, katy. at that time they'll enter their pleas of not guilty or guilty. we expect everybody to enter a not guilty plea. we expect igor fruman to be there. that's the mechanics if you will of the players that's involved and what's next in the legal case. all this stems from the ongoing and continuing investigation into this foreign money influence scheme, which is definitely picking up steam. it's an investigation that's been going on for some time. and it's an investigation that we continue to report developments on. >> tom, can you give us a little bit more about how correa links up with fruman and parnas? >> basically, he's involved every step of the way. this is one of the things that tells us here there is a lot about this case that prosecutors and federal investigators know that we don't. typically, when we get an indictment out of the southern district of new york. it's lengthy. it details the specific payments who did what when. we don't necessarily have it in this case. all we know is that according to charging documents, kour rhea, fruman parnas and another person involved in this skrooem scheme, they usually lump them altogether and say they're the ones communicating with foreign officials such as the former ukrainian prosecutor to try to direct the effort to get rid of the then ukrainian ambassador. it's those types of things they lump everybody in together with. but they don't specifically say, okay, except for a few instances, this is what correa did or specifically what parnas did. they are looped together in a lot of the charging documents here. so i expect we will hear more as time goes on as far as what correa's role was and his ties to the primary people you have shown on screen the ones associated with rudy guiliani. >> igor fruman and doug parnas, doug, they're associates with rudy guiliani and now talk about rudy guiliani potentially being looked into by the southern district of new york, which is uncomfortable because he used to run the southern district of new york. how do you see rudy guiliani's -- or what do you see as his potential exposure? >> first, i read through the indictment. i agree with tom, while it's fairly lengthy, it doesn't layout the details. so we're scratching our heads. >> that indictment doesn't mention guiliani. he is not involved in that. however, there are relationships and story lines that the southern district of new york and as you point out rudy guiliani was the united states attorney for the southern district. but the point is they're going to look at it objectively and they want to see exactly what, if any, involvement he may have had in this, you know, the scheme enlisted in the indictment, eighth scheme to make significant political contribution, you know, to pro trump, a pro trump pac and then hide it and so on. but the story lines with mayor juliy guiliani are different an that's an attempt to get rid of the ambassador. and that's what they're going to look at. and any time just wrapping up in my thinking, any time somebody is looking at you, it's cause for concern number one. of course the big situation, katy, would be why didn't anybody cooperate? it's hard to tell, it's early, you know. >> i want to ask you this, how high is the bar to really go after rudy guiliani, who's president's personal attorney. he is the former mayor of new york. he's the former head of the sdny. at what point, how much information do they need in order to potentially indict him or charge him with anything? >> no, that's a great question. because there is two facets to your question. one is subliminal human nature, which is somebody very high up, very note annual, et cetera. is there a different standard? the technical answer is no human beings are human beings. however, the point is, there are doj policies in the united states attorney's manual talking about going after a different figure. political figures. he doesn't work right now. that's a very significant part of my answer to your question. so i mean again not to sound corner corny, you hope that will be looked at fairly and accurately and to the extent that it's warranted. but to answer your question, the bar is not that high, katy, honestly. >> technically it's not that high, doug burns, tom winter, thank you as well. >> my pleasure. katy smplts senator tally duckworth call's trumps defense to withdraw troops indefensible. shewith sheis with us next. sheis with us next hey there people eligible for medicare. gimme two minutes. and i'll tell you some important things to know about medicare. first, it doesn't pay for everything. say this pizza... ali vitali and shaquille brewster. ali, you've been following elizabeth warren all around the country. this is the first time we have really seen her get attacked. how does her camp take it today? >> reporter: that's exactly right. i mean, stephanie, it's pretty clear from the way that the rest of the field was treating her on the stage last night that they think that she's the front-runner who needs to be taken down a peg, and that's exactly what we saw. i think everyone on the stage, except for julian castro and bernie sanders went after elizabeth warren. and so, clearly, there's a dynamic shifting in the race there just based on what we've been seeing in the polls, in the way in which she's been rising. but you also watched the way in which she dealt with those attacks. she really doubled down and didn't cede any ground, whether it was on medicare for all or defending a wealth tax. that's something that i'm not necessarily surprised that she did, because as she's been pressed on these issues, even by us on the campaign trail, that's exactly how she's dealt with it. a lot of the responses that i heard last night are things that i have been hearing on the campaign trail for the last few weeks. the only question now is, now that they're in the limelight, now that they're held up to extra scrutiny because she's the front-runner, how do they hold up? and frankly, the other person i cover on the campaign trail is senator amy klobuchar, who was one of two people who went really hard at elizabeth warren last night. klobuchar seemed really itching and ready to make that comparison when i spoke to her on sunday night. she told me then she wanted to make the comparison that she was the moderate who could offer pragmatic policies. clearly, she didn't tell me elizabeth warren's name on sunday night, but obviously, when you watch her execution, that's exactly how it came down. and really, amy cloklobuchar ha been someone who's really not found her footing on these prior debate stages, but last night, obviously, in a really do-or-die moment, because she's not yet on the november debate stage, was trying to make the case for herself as the moderate option on the stage there. >> shaq, last night was big for bernie sanders. his first appearance since his heart attack. now getting an endorsement from aoc. he's got to be happy with that performance. >> reporter: that's right. and i spoke to his campaign manager just a couple of minutes ago, and they're really ecstatic by what they saw from senator sanders last night. first, the heart attack didn't come up as much as they perhaps expected and were prepared for going into this debate, but he also mentioned that we saw a side of senator sanders that we don't normally see on the television cameras. we saw senator sanders laughing, smiling, joking with the other candidates, and also had somewhat of that heartwarming or reflective moment as he thanked his other candidates there for their support as he was in the hospital and dealing with his heart attack. but if there's one thing the campaign was really trying to show yesterday, it's that bernie sanders is back and that he wants to be a force in this campaign. we saw that with the endorsements that were rolled out even before the debate ended. we learned that aoc, representative alexandria ocasio-cortez, is now going to be endorsing him at his big rally in new york on saturday. we have an endorsement from representative omar, and they also are celebrating their fund-raising numbers. so, they're really trying to show bernie sanders is back in this campaign and will be a force. >> ah, bernie sanders, that surprise special guest in queens, we quickly realized it was going to be aoy. thank you both so much. joining this conversation, jonathan allen, or as i call him, the birthday boy. nbc news national political reporter. victoria defrancesco soto from the university of texas, former deputy secretary of state and spokesperson for hillary clinton, and my dear friend tim miller, former communications director for jeb bush's 2016 campaign. jonathan, i follow you on twitter. your big takeaway, klobuchar, klobuchar, klobuchar, huh? ali vitali has the latest from columbus, ohio. ali, thanks for joining us on this. very much appreciate it. what do voters want to hear from the candidates tomorrow night? >> reporter:ad minute, over the course of the past few months voters told me they wanted to hear candidates differentiate themselves. and when you consider the size of this debate 12 candidates standing side by side together we know how that looks when ten candidates are trying to get a word in. i think you are going to see a lot of them mixing in up with each other. because this is really the last chance to make an impression on voters and potentially get themselves momentum in the polls so that they can qualify for that next upcoming debate in november. but voters also would like to hear them focus in on president trump, how they would hold him accountable, how they are different from him. but at the same time they don't want to hear "i'm not trump." they want to hear policy plans and the big ideas. so i guess the shorter answer to what voters want out of these debates is frankly a little bit of everything, yasmin. >> i know you've spoken with some leaders from the ohio democratic party. we know what the impeachment inquiry is going to be that it's going to be a major topic looming over the debate. is the inquiry a concern for state party leaders there? >> reporter: i think less of a concern and just more an acknowledgment that this is the political reality now for democrats and republicans, despite the fact that not many republicans have come out and said that they think this is the way we should go on impeachment. but i do think that in talking to the party leaders this is just the reality now. listen to what one of the state party chairs here in ohio told me last night. >> our voters want to hear about what you're going to to save the plant in lordstown, what you're going to do about health care and failed promises all over the state. we would love to only talk about terrible policies, but at a certain point as the speaker has said if the president is going to sil impeach, you have to act consistent with your oath to the constitution. >> reporter: and when david pepper brings up the constitution, that's frankly what a lot of the 2020 candidates have said when they themselves have said that an impeachment inquiry is the right way to go, that it's above partisanship. but impeachment has also had a big impact on the 2020 field in that it's frozen it in place. so if you're not one of the top three candidates who we are dinl seeing in the polls, then this is really an important moment especially for those people who have not qualified for the debate. a lot of candidates see that media coverage as a way to help them with their momentum. so tonight's important, yasmin. >> it seems like there's always going to be an important moment as the stage is going to be widelled down. beth, thanks for joining us on this. i appreciate it. let's talk hunter biden. what do you make of the move? >> so, as you know, it's been this very awkward thing for former vice president biden. he is the frontrunner on the democratic side. people worry that he's a little bit of a shaky frontrunner, particularly now that the glare is on him and on his son because of the impeachment inquiry that is being planned by the house for president trump because president trump has actively sought information on vice president -- the vice president's son's business dealings in ukraine. we also know that hunter biden was sitting on the board of this private equity company with some chinese backing. he's been under relentless assault from many people in the conservative mediasphere on what that work was and whether this sort of smacked some sort of swampy behavior that of course president trump has vowed to get rid of. so it's took a while for vice president even to weigh in to talk about his son and basically say there is no evidence of wrongdoing that his son had, the fact that he was working in ukraine. then finally hunter biden himself stepped forward first through this letter that his attorney published yesterday saying that hunter would step down from this company. and then finally hunter biden is going to do an interview on another network abc news that's going to air tomorrow morning with his side of the story. >> does it seem as if this is what the president wanted to a certain extent is for moves like this to be made by hunter biden and the former vice president? >> well, the whole history of hunter biden's involvement in ukraine and former vice president biden's involvement in ukraine is very much in the past. but it's something that's been very fertile ground for people to just wonder why hunter biden was doing the work he was doing in ukraine while his father was involved in foreign policy and the obama administration. however, it's also i would say, yasmin, an interesting way for president trump to take away the many criticisms of him and his family that they are involved in all sorts of swampy business dealings to enrich the family, bottom line, and project it back out onto joe biden. and also to sort of do a, you know, what you might call sort of a reverse move here with making vice president biden's family which has been kind of his shield, his connection to voters because of the tragedies that his family have gone through and suddenly make it a negative for vice president biden rather than the really wholesome supportive image that vice president biden has projected all of this. president trump is basically yielding this as a weapon which nobody probably particularly expected and yet vice president biden should've known was coming because there had been so much focus in the conservative media leading up to his presidential campaign on this particular subject. >> all right, aliy much. appreciate, toys. cyntoia brown-long was released from prison in august after then-tennessee governor commuted her sentence back in january. her case received nationwide attention. brown-long was only 16 years old when she shot and killed a man she says picked her up for sex because she feared for her life. she was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison. her story was championed by celebrities like kim kardashian-west and rihanna. we sat down with an exclusive interview on her experience. lester, welcome to you. >> thank you. good to be here. interesting person, 15 years in prison and then suddenly this celebrity groundswell starts putting out all this attention about her. and one of the things i wondered about was that a blessing or a curse? let's hear what she had to say about that. suddenly, people like kim kardashian are tweeting about you and raising this issue of clemency. was there a part of you that was afraid of the attention that maybe it could backfire? >>
ali vitali has the latest from columbus, ohio. ali, thanks for joining us on this. very much appreciate it. what do voters want to hear from the candidates tomorrow night? >> reporter:ad minute, over the course of the past few months voters told me they wanted to hear candidates differentiate themselves. and when you consider the size of this debate 12 candidates standing side by side together we know how that looks when ten candidates are trying to get a word in. i think you are going to...

ali velshi, live in jerusalem. and with us our michael mcfaul. ali, what do we know of reports of fighting in northeast syria. the president is saying there is a cease-fire but we just played some sound where you can clearly hear bombs still going off. >> yes. >> so we heard words of pause and i will tell you a second why a pause that was in fighting that meant to last about five days to allow these kurdish allies to the united states and the syrian democratic forces which are populated. now we heard about this about 24 hours ago. we got some confirmation. a little after that there had been an absolute pause to all the fighting. then we ended up hearing from our own staff of reports of fighting in the area. president trump tweeted that he spoken to erdogan about this and that it was sporatic figdic fig and it would come to an end. what's interesting is what mr. trump said, the kurds are happy with this deal and president erdogan are satisfied with it. the kurds can't be happy with any deal involving the united states pulling back from that border to allow the turks to do what they wanted to do and occupy that space. president erdogan got everything he wanted. he got america to leave the area, they started the fighting and president trump asked them to stop the fighting for vice president pence and mike pompeo in turkey, stop the fighting for five days so the kurds could leave the area. kind of remarkable than erdogan would be satisfied by that. he must be thrilled by this turn around by u.s. policies. yet more interesting than that is the fact that this started because president trump announced on october 9th that he's pulling u.s. troops back from the syrian border. he's taking credit for solving the crisis that many of the world believes may have been his creation. >> listen to what he said. >> without spilling one drop of american blood -- we all agreed on a pause or a sacease-fire in the border region of syria. it was unconventional of what i did. i said they'll have to fight a little. sometimes you have to let memory fight a little while then people find out how tough the fighting is. sometimes you have to let them fight. it is like two kids in a lock, you have to let them fight and pull them apart. >> for many, many years turkey and all fairness they had a legislative problem with it. they had terrorists and a lot of people in there that they could not have. they suffered a lot of loss of lives also. they have the habit cleaned out. >> reporter: like two kids in a fight, sometimes you have to let them fight. this is all remarkable given in the fight against isis it was the kurds who fought alongside u.s. troops. make what you will of what you heard the president says. >> the president is saying the kurds and turks are happy. how is this a win for the kurds? >> of course it is not. just because the president says they're happy, there is no evidence they are happy. they are being removed from the land they have been on. when he used the word "cleaning out," there is another phrase for that, "ethnic cleansing," that's what's going on here. it is embarrassing for me. this is complete -- it means that we'll just abandon our allies. when he says a drop of blood was not dropped -- well, 11,000 kurds died fighting our enemy, isis, right next to us. according to reports, 90 to 100 people already died and we are selling out our allies. it is not good for america's reputation around the world and not good for our sfwrinterests the middle east. >> is there any sort of diplomatic solutions whether or not it was the president deciding to pull troops that caused it. what can and should we do if the cease-fire does not hold? >> i don't think we have any great options now. he had capitulated. he given erdogan everything he wanted. erdogan wanted the safe zone for years and he wanted to achieve this for a long time. now that the president signals he's pulling out and lift the sanctions because of this so-called cease-fire and emphasis on the adjectives there. also it is as win for mr. erdogan and a win for assad. the worst dictator in the world, he butchered and killed half a million more. it is a victory for the iranians. i don't know what one needs to do to make business deals in real estate. this is really, really bad diplomacy. >> what portion of the american people consider this a win? besides the small group who says, well, we don't know the kurds anyway. besides that faction, who in the united states who understands this -- good news mr. president, great news for america. >> well, he had his loyal base and a lot of people in americans want us to be seen less engage in war in the middle east. >> there are places where we have far more troops. >> correct. that was what i was going to say. the paradox of this or the dishonest way the president is talking about, one, we are not pulling our troops back. we are sending them to other places, the middle east and including saudi arabia. well, they'll be in saudi arabia because the saudis are paying for them. when did we want the u.s. military to become mercenaries for somebody else. number two. this is really important. we are in syria because we are fighting terrorist organizations princip principally isis that wants to attack us. september 11th, al-qaida was also 7,000 miles away, they attack us. he forgets there are tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of americans, soldiers and civilians all over the globe. it is his responsibility, commander in chief to protect those people as well. when you pull back and you stop fighting terrorists and syria. it means we'll be fighting isis some where else. it is a really, really important move that we made. >> ambassador michael mcfaul. i think we lost my partner alii wish he's safe and i am glad he's joining us. >>> mark sezuckerberg is callin for free speech. coming up. you will want to see this right here on "velshi & ruhle" on msnbc. "velshi & ruhle" on msnbc. >>> welcome back to "velshi & ruhle." mark zuckerberg is facing criticism. zuckerberg gave a speech at georgetown university defending facebook's practices, painting his network as an arbitor of free speech. >> believe the long journey confronting ideas that challenged us. i am here today because i believe that we must continue to send for free expression. >> joining me now is facebook's vice president global affairs and communications, nick clag. >> thank you for joining me. mark zuckerberg is saying what facebook stands for is the celebration of freedom of speech. since from a business perspective, facebook has spent the last 12 years aggressively trying to do business in china. >> i think mark zuckerberg's speech was quite open. he did want facebook services to be available to focus i
