their continuous collaboration for the recreation and park's department is a testament to the success for park and communities p whilwhile they are the most successful in parks, their success is matched to creating vibrant open space for everyone to enjoy and this makes them a natural fit for our partnership and to lead the fundraising campaign. at this time, i would like to invite the ceo of the parks to speak. >> i'm drew betcher and thank you for the opportunity and i want to give a shout-out to my leadership team. this is important to the citizens and county of san francisco. i just wanted to point out the history and experience of the park's alliance. we have been around since 1971, building and helping to build this city's rec and park department. i would say the rec and park department in san francisco is now one of the top recreation and park's department. it got there with advocacy and partnerships. that's what we are built on with 12 now community leaders that we organize every year and 200 community groups, that we're fiscally sponsored organization and most are in our park

the park's plan, the park's plan, as i mentioned is a subset of documents that govern the parks. the dda requires they deliver the parks. the agreement with the city requires that they limit public events in the park to mak make e they have a public park. we have a permit that similarly requires quite a lot of public access and maintains access during private events. for the port side, we'll have two documents. the first is this park's plan and we will subsequently bring to you a management agreement this will be a contract to manage the parks. so the one before you is a planning level document. we want amend it as we go forward if we find the vision or goals need to be tweaked. the two goals here -- the vision here is one as developer and port staff. talking to the public, they feel it's an accurate representation of what the public wanted. they wanted robust public activation. the parks and open space requires goals and objectionives. i listed the four key ones on this slide. i'm not a planner so when i talk about planning documents, i cannot get the language right, so i won't r

the park was transferred to recreation and parks in june 2017 from the office of community investment and infrastructure, formerly, redevelopment. the renovation will include new children's play area, new picnic area, site furnishings, planting, new park lighting and new accessible paths of travel. the project is funded through a variety of sources including a hud community development block grant. yes, that is federal money coming into san francisco. the california natural resources agency. and this commission was also extremely helpful in ensuring that we had the final piece of the puzzle in funding the playground. we're grateful. completion of the project is anticipated next year. moving west, we now arrive at the san francisco botanical garden. where its newly transformed celebration garden will showcase iconic plants from the collection and provide a venue for special events. this $1.7 million renovation was made possible through public-private partnership, including contributions from several donors and volunteers. what is not in my notes, but is true, this project was seed-fund

i'm one of the people that been to these parks. i love seeing these investments and improvements, but the timelines between estimated and actual completion is wildly different. there are a few probabilijects completed early, but most are delivered late. what efforts are you taking as you think of the 2020 bond, to try to get that to line up better so when people's expectations will line up better with what we're seeing. >> that's a good question. i think we continue to learn through the process. one of the things we're doing now is actually having a much more robust timeline for each phase of work. so, maybe sometimes we believe community engagement should take six months. what we're finding out is that it takes closer to a year plus. on much more complicated projects, what we're doing is actually leveraging existing funds to understand the scope of our work better, so that the issues around scoping, around costing can be realized early so we can implement the projects better. you know, also the other part of this is i believe we're
