one so welcome back to just ask the question today it is a treat to have my mentor on this show sam donaldson who for years covered the white house for a.b.c. what's wrong with the white house today going to take dumb to trump is what's wrong with the white house i mean donald trump is basically ignorant about things other than his cunning ability as a con man right he started at the roy cohn colmes philosophy clearly was we can win at any cost and never mind whether it's legal or not never mind who you heard or not you we've. got a truck has a doctor that philosophy he's think trump has your relatively harmed a the united states and b. our profession i think he has harmed it greatly i do not believe it's irrevocably harmed i think quoting lincoln in the good sense of the american people will ultimately prevail i think the majority of people in this country want the morays want the ethics wants the morality all of the standards that we all grew up with their parents their grandparents we're a country built on standards yeah he's harmed them in every possible way but i don't think he's destroy

reagan started his term, his first press conference, sam donaldson asked him a question in 1981 and reagan said, the soviet union reserves to itself the right to lie, to cheat, and to steal. then by may 1988, he's literally playing with babies in red square with gorbachev. dr. hill alluded to that moment, what reagan called the moscow spring, in this moscow spring we look forward. and so mccain of course came out of that tradition. and it was -- and i'm very careful about the narcissism of the president and the dangerous nostalgia we have for this mythic by partisan past. ask franklin roosevelt, ask joe mccarthy about how partisan the world was, our most ferocious fights were against isolationism, against nazi germany. so let's not be idealists here. these were our rivals. we could disagree on how to confront them and to what extent. president trump has scrambled this. this is a historically-based reading, i think, of a huge chunk of american history. and while trump in many ways is the manifestation, the symbol of a lot of perennial forces in american life, xenophobia, nativism, isolation

i want to call on my colleague, sam donaldson, who has covered capitol hill, covered the entire watergate hearings, has covered the house judiciary committee. we begin one day after the chief counsel for the judiciary committee responded to the question, do you now have all the evidence you need to go ahead? and his answer, two words, definitely not. does that indicate that we're likely to have quite a battle here? >> well, not today, frank. as you said, the committee will eventually close its session door and his republican counterpart, albert jenner, will begin to lay out paragraph by paragraph an overview of one phase of the case, the watergate phase. he says he doesn't have all the information he needs. the committee as you know subpoenaed 42 recordings from the white house. the president turned over none of those, although he did turn over 31 interrupts. and as you know, mr. st. clair said none of the water gate recordings will be provided. >> there is doubt where tape recordings of those relevant conversations actually exist. >> that's right. many of the committee members have said
