. >> well, joining me now to discuss is shimon prokupecz and anne milgram.ood to have both of you on. shimon, bannon is the most high-profile witness to testify at stone's trial so far. he didn't want to be there, but what did he learn from him? >> he certainly didn't want to be there. i think it's really interesting that he's consistently made that point. he made that point on the witness stand. it's very significant. he was required to come in and talk about his contact and the emails and text messages and the communications. some a dozen times he told the jury that he had between him and roger stone. look, i think the bottom line is roger stone came to them -- came to steve bannon and said, i can get you information about wikileaks and what wikileaks was working on, the hacked emails that they had as it related to hillary clinton, and how that could possibly hurt hillary clinton and help the campaign and help donald trump win. and honestly when you look at the emails that steve bannon exchanged with roger stone, they were very excited by this. they were h

let discuss, shimon prokupecz, elie honig. shimon, what are the key things we are learning today?t of the gate in the opening statements from prosecutors, they laid out their motive, why they believe roger stone lied. and as much as donald trump is obviously not present in this trial, he's not going to appear here, he's not going to be a witness, he is a big part of this trial. and prosecutors wanted to make that clear. they say the reason why roger stone lied, why he lied to members of congres during this investigation, was because he wanted to protect the trump campaign. he wanted to protect donald trump. they also revealed that they're going to be calling some big witnesses, steve bannon, a man that they call the ceo. they told the jurors this was the senior man on the campaign, that he was the ceo of the campaign and that roger stone and he were emailing. roger stone and he were talking. then as you said, rick gates. rick gates is going to come in as well. and then the other big reveal here today was that we learned from the first witness, a former fbi agent who worked on the

shimon prokupecz is live on us the courthouse. shimon, ripresident trump said doesn't recall hearing any information that would help his campaign. that contradicts this. >> reporter: it does, because what gates did coming in, he laid out this entire situation behind the scenes that was going on in the campaign of trying to get information from roger stone who was claiming to have inside information into wikileaks. not only was he communicating with people like paul manafort, who was the chairman of the campaign at the time, and then there was conversations with rick gates, that rick gates talked about with roger stone concerning wikileaks, but then we also learned directly from rick gates today that roger stone was communicating with then-candidate donald trump, trying to send him signals, give him information indicating that wikileaks was about to put out more information. that conversation taking place in an suv with rick gates inside, and then candidate donald trump as they were on their way to la guardia airport, and what rick

shimon prokupecz joins me now to discuss.himon, bannon ran the campaign, or at least one of the leading people running it. how critical will his testimony be to the prosecution's case? >> reporter: well it appears it is going to be super critical, jake. prosecutors, as you say, not only was he leading this campaign, they described to the jury, described him as being the ceo of the campaign. and how he and roger stone were in touch. that they were talking over emails and going back and forth in their discussions and one email that the prosecutors highlighted to the jury, this happened in the summer and the height of when wikileaks was threatened to issue and release more emails, he said -- the prosecutor said that stone emails bannon saying that trump could win and then, quote, but it ain't pretty. and then bannon replies, let's talk. prosecutors then say that bannon and stone were talking wikileaks all summer long. saying that stone had told bannon that he had inside information about what julian assange was doing. so by all

shimon, is giuliani acting as trump's attorney or not? >> this is all why i think time and time again i think we keep hearing from the people who have come before congressional investigators and testified. they were all warned. what we keep hearing consistently is stay away from rudy giuliani. so what was going on? what were they seeing? were was he doing? and if he was acting as the president's lawyer, why would he be involved in this shadow -- what people are now saying the shadow state department? trying to act out of his own interests. and whoever was guiding him, these two people, these two y ukrainians he was working with, what is going on? it's still unclear. that's why investigators are still unclear, why the sdny, why the fbi has taken some of this on. >> clearly he got in trump's ear and started telling him this stuff about ukraine and maybe trump started buying into it or thought it was a good campaign strategy or what have you to investigate. we shall see that's part of what they're trying to figure out. it's interesting he wo

shimon prokupecz is here as well as jennifer rogers. shimon, you were in the courthouse today.for stone. what were the biggest take-aways? >> it was certainly a rough day for stone. it didn't help the judge in some ways scolded his defense attorney, said he was kind of being sleepily during cross-examination and she was worried he was losing some of the jurors because of the pace of his cross-examination. but quite simply there is overwhelming evidence here of what prosecutors say are lies, lies that roger stone gave to the congressional committee that was investigating russian interference about his contacts with the campaign, contacts with donald trump. they're laying all that out. they're building out that time line, showing e-mails, text messages, all the back and forth going on between roger stone and the campaign, don. >> so stone's former friend and comedian roger credico, he said he wanted roger credico -- he texted what he wanted his friend roger credico to do in 2017 quoting president nixon. and he said stonewall it, pleaded the fifth, anything to save the plan, richa

joining me now is shimon prokupecz live outside of the courthouse and bannon painted stone as the keymunicators to wikileaks? >> reporter: that is exactly right, jake. at least in the campaign's mind. and steve bannon's mind and during the campaign when roger stone approached them and said he had access to wikileaks they believed he would be the guy that was going to get them information about wikileaks. it is extremely significant for the government to have him on the stand. he is the first witness and the first and just the beginning of this part of the case where the government is trying to show that roger stone was in communication with the campaign, with senior-level people inside of the campaign about what he was trying to do. that is get access to the wikileaks information claiming he could tell them what he knew and steve bannon made it clear on the witness stand that the whole point of this was to help the campaign, to help donald trump and hurt hillary clinton. his testimony was brief. about 45 minutes or so. and as you said, it was very important. the first question out of

shimon prokupecz is here, also jennifer rodgers. shimon, i'm going to start with you.eporting on lev parnas, the giuliani associate who is under sdny indictment. what's going on with him? >> yeah. so this is a big reversal here, don. lev parnas, of course, is that giuliani associate. he was subpoenaed before he was indicted, before he was arrested to appear before members of congress. they wanted documents from him. keep in mind this is the guy who paid rudy giuliani $500,000 for work he was doing, said he was not going to comply with members of congress. in fact it was days after the subpoena was issued that they were leaving the country, which caused them to be arrested by the fbi. his attorney now says he's going to comply with some of the requests from members of congress. big thing for me here is what does this mean for rudy giuliani. you know, could this potentially bring some problems for him? and the other thing here is are they trying to signal something to prosecutors in the southern district of new york by offering this cooperation or that they're willing to

shimon prokupecz has been at the trial for us. take us to court and maybe a movie review. >> it's an interesting day in court where the agent for roger stone really detailing the many ways roger stone was trying to intimidate a witness who was about to go and talk to members of congress. you remember that witness, it's randy credico, comedian and radio host from new york. it's been a colorful morning, a lot of language we can't say on television, but there's been a reference to roger stone telling credico about randy five fingers from t"the godfather." he said anything to save the plan, stonewall, a reference to richard nixon, of course. a lot of serious business as well. the agent that's on the stand is testifying about the contacts that roger stone had, the numerous ways in which he was communicating with members of the trump campaign about his information, about his access to wikileaks and what he was trying to do. and, of course, we're all waiting for one of the big witnesses here, steve banbannon who prosecutors have identifi

shimon prokupecz picks it up from here. >> reporter: the newly obtained fbi reports show how president trump and other top 2016 trump officials repeatedly discussed how to get access to the stolen wick leaks emails. rick gates games discussions within the trump's campaign as it pursued damaging information about hillary clinton. some of what these discussions show recalled a time on the campaign aircraft when trump said get the emails. the interviews show michael flynn claimed he could somehow use intelligence sources to obtain some of these emails. and then rick gates describes how several close advisers to donald trump and trump's family members and trump himself consider how to get the stone documents and even pushed for this effort donald trump jr. we're told in family meetings, according to these documents, would have discussions about this. michael flynn was present, jared kushner, paul manafort and people attached to the campaign, corey lewandowsky, jeff sessions who was part of the campaign at the time all expressed interest in obtaining the emails as well. this is just the sta

shimon, here's roger stone returning home being found guilty on all charges. >> what's your reaction to the verdict? >> no comment. >> will be seeking a pardon from president trump sph. >> no comment. >> no, don't do that. just be polite. no comment. >> he's scheduled to be sentenced this coming february. what message can you send, do you think? >> i think it's a very significant message. i sat there in the courtroom when the prosecutors were making their closing argument, and they explained to the jury really the last words from the prosecutors were probably the most significant talking about how truth matters. because roger stone's attorneys tried to in the end argue so what, so what he lied to members of grz. this case was really not anything significant, but these prosecutors it was significant. they talked about why truth matters. we have institutions, laws. they mentioned that members of congress, congressional hearings and how important it is to be honest when you go in there. so it has very -- the implications are much bigger. this really is bigger than just roger stone. and

so let's get straight to shimon prokupecz. walk us through this reporting. what will the inspector general's report reveal? >> i think a lot has been made certainly by the republicans, the president, people at fox news somehow this report is going to place blame on the fbi, the leaders of the fbi at the time, james comey, andrew mccabe who was the deputy director and then at one point acting director of the fbi, that somehow they were all wrong in what they did here in pursuing this investigation, the russia investigation, that they were biased, that there was some kind of conspiracy here. that is not going to happen. in fact, much of it is going to say the opposite. that the fbi had the right to open this investigation, the russian meddling investigation, that they had the predicate. legally they had enough support to do the investigation. there was enough information contained that they had obtained they could go ahead and open this investigation. so the idea there was some kind of conspiracy, a witch hunt here by the fbi to go after the president, to go a

let's go to our colleague shimon prokupecz outside the trial with all the developments.e to court? >> no idea yet when he's going to actually appear and testify, but certainly as you said, it's going to be a big day. prosecutors here yesterday in their opening statement and, really, in the direct examination, there's an fbi agent that has just taken the stand. she was laying out yesterday's -- bannon's role in all of this. the president's role in all of this. and they are certainly billing him as a big witness. and his whole involvement and this really is communications, emails and text messages with roger stone about roger stone's efforts to get some of these emails, get information on exactly what wikileaks had. in one exchange, roger stone tells steve bannon he knows how to win and it isn't going to be pretty, but he knows how the president, then candidate donald trump, could win and then bannon says to him, well, let's talk asap. and then there's another exchange between someone who works for steve bannon after that big dump in october from wikileaks where the person

shimon, start with you.at did rick gates say about the president's knowledge of wikileaks back in 2016? >> while he basically said that the president then candidate donald trump knew everything that was going on concerning wikileaks and what roger stone was doing and how he was offering what he was claiming was inside information on what wikileaks was doing and described excitement by the campaign, knowing that perhaps they were going to get information that was damming for hillary clinton, and all of this happening really at the end. dramatic moment happening at the end of rick gates testimony. the prosecutor asking him about a phone call he was present for inside an suv with donald trump on their way to laguardia airport in new york city in july of 2016. it came at the end of the month. there was a phone call. he could see on donald trump's phone the caller i.d., it was roger stone calling trump, telling him that more information was coming. that wikileaks was going to put out more information. that phone

tell the truth. >> i want to go quickly back to shimon prokupecz with more details. shimon?date everyone, he's been convicted on all counts. one of those counts is having to do with lying about his contacts with the trump campaign and donald trump. that was the sixth count. then the seventh count which he was convicted on was the intimidation of randy credico, who is an important witness for the prosecution. he eventually wound up cooperating with members of congress, and there are all these colorful and really o outlandish crazy texts between randy credico and roger stone and roger trying to say things to get him not to cooperate, then making a reference to "the godfather 2." all of that came out in court. wha what's going on now is prosecutors actually were asking for the judge to detain roger stone. she, we're just being told, has decided she's going to let him sit out his awaiting sentence, she's going to allow him to remain free and that he's going to be sentenced on february 6th. but i also want to make a point of something, anderson, having sat through this trial now

shimon prokupecz joins me now. and day one and there is already drama.feeling well. it all started this morning around 10:15. he went to the bathroom, his wife followed him. she said he wasn't feeling well and in there for quite sometime. he came out and then later in the afternoon he asked a judge if he could be excused for the rest of the day. he wasn't feeling well. the judge let him go and even offered him some imodium to try to get him to stay in court. that didn't happen. he left. but there was even more drama. we had a witness -- a juror seated in the audience who collapsed and an ambulance had to come and remove them. and then there was an argument of some kind in the hallway between two roger stone associates. so that is sort of turned to a thing. and when you think about this is just the beginning. this is just jury selection. we're supposed to start opening statements tomorrow. and then we start seeing some of the more interesting witnesses, associates of roger stone come in and testify. >> what a surprise that a stone trial would start off as

shimon what can we expect to hear from bannon?e second phase of this trial, ana, where prosecutors are now going to outline the very important and probably the most crucial point of this trial and really the most crucial point of why roger stone was charged and arrested is now the phase concerning roger stone's contacts with the trump campaign and his knowledge about wikileaks and what he was communicating to the campaign and claiming he was going to be able to get him some of the emails and information. that is where steve bannon will play a big role. he's expected to testify about emails and about communication that he had with roger stone where roger stone was claiming to have access and information concerning what wikileaks was working on and some of the emails they were going to release. specifically there was one email that roger stone said to steve bannon saying that he knew how to win. that it wasn't going to be pretty, and then steve bannon responded, let's talk asap. that is what he's going to testify. it is probably "th

shimon prokupecz is live at the federal courthouse in washington., you knew there was going to be drama. >> always is around him. this time it was his stomach. his stomach causing quite a stir here in the courtroom. twice the judge needing to take a break so that roger stone can go to the bathroom. she herself noticed at one point, roger stone wasn't feeling well, putting his hand over his head, closing his eyes. at one point she even offered him immodium and finally the judge said maybe it's best for him to go home for the day. she excused him for the day and they continued with jury selection. but that wasn't the only drama here at the courthouse. there were arguments between an ally of roger stone and someone else. an audience member, someone seated in the audience passed out. an ambulance had to come. that briefly delayed the proceeding. all in all, the day did continue finally. they did seal the some additional jurors and today we expect them to perhaps finish with jury selection and then we can have opening statements and maybe even one of our

>> shimon, this promises to be a fascinating day.all of the developments there. >>> now to this. two former twitter employees accused of being spies for saudi arabia. prosecutors say they used their access at the social media giant to collect sensitive and private information on saudi dissidents. cnn's senior justice correspondent evan perez is live in washington with details. tell us more. >> there's been a concern certainly by the fbi and the justice department that the saudi government was using people here inside this country to try to spy on saudi dissidents. of course, we saw that concern increase after the murder of saudi dissident journalist jamal khashog khashoggi. these two former twitter employees are accused of essentially using their access to sensitive data inside the twitter system to be able to pass on this information so that these saudi dissidents could be targeted by the government. these two are both accused of being agents of the -- of a foreign power, along with a third man who allegedly was acting as a go-betwe
