joining me now to discuss, jim gold with the jewish federation of rockland county. thank you so much for taking the time this morning. >> thank you for having me. >> so it's in the statistics that attacks, anti-semitic attacks in new york state, but also nationally, have increased in recent months and years. why? what do you blame this on? >> i think that social media is a big part of it. social media, you can post whatever you want, under any assumed name. and not get called out by it. and the posts are horrible. even after the stabbing in rockland county on one of the local facebook groups, somebody wrote that the guy didn't stab enough of those jews, that he should have stabbed more. you know, we had an incident about a year ago and somebody posted that hitler didn't do enough -- didn't put enough jews in the ovens. my parents were holocaust survivors, ruth and emanuel gold. and growing up, my father always told me to make sure you do whatever you do to make sure it never happens again and never to forget. i feel i failed him with what's going on. piffle rockland

it's 30 miles north of new york city, in rockland county. it has 18,000 people in that town. steve, when we were listening to these press conferences and had people from the jewish community speaking, one of them brought up social media. would you say social my yeah changed the game not only in terms of the hate crimes possibly increasing, but the way you go about investigating these. a lot of people love to go behind a computer and spew all this hate. it seems like it's more than it has been. >> social media has changed the game with regard to not only the police finding what i call electronic footprints that lead back to possible suspects. but it's truly adding a lot of fuel to the fire that is of hate that is spreading around the country. i believe and i said this quite often. social media companies have to do a lot moyer policing of what's going on. there is no redeeming value when people put up things, i hate jews, or let's do this, or let's do that for specific groups. part of the solution is everyone getting involved, our private industries as well as government to ide

and for people who aren't familiar, this is rockland county. this is one of the largest per capita populations of orthodox jews in the country. you've actually been to the scene there. you mentioned a little bit about how the community is doing. they can't continue. this is obviously not sustainable. they're living in fear. tell us about what you're hearing from them. >> so i got to the scene on saturday night about 11:00 and i stayed until 6:00 the next morning, working with law enforcement and talking with community members. the common theme i heard from community members in the monsey area around that synagogue is the enormous fear they have for their children. they really feel like their lives are being completely affected in how they can worship, how safe they feel. there are a lot of interconnectors between the monsey community and the brooklyn jewish community. a lot of family members have family in both communities. it deeply affects monsey and brooklyn and vice versa. what happened a month before, it certainly affected the community in
