the gentleman from south dakota. mr. johnson: in august, i was insighting bull college and i spoke with the instructors, the professors and the administrators and most importantly the students there. and the stories of these students, they brought such a smile to my face. if anybody is having a bad day, you've got to go to one of these tribal colleges and got to hear from the students who are seeing the prospects for a better tomorrow improve every single day they sit in the classroom. to see these facilities which are not -- these are not the fansiest campuses in america, but these are places where people with large hearts have built a center of learning for economic activity. one student, i asked her, because she had a very difficult life and i said, why do you per server. why are you doing homework later in the night so you can be prepared to class? wouldn't it be easier to do something else? she said congressman johnson, the life i have had isn't the life i want to have. my children deserve better and sir, i'm going

next up a look look at one of our segments from rapid city, south dakota. >> we are here in south dakota's state park and were at the state game lodge which is a 1920s era building that was constructed several years before president calvin coolidge made his summer white house here in 1927. president coolidge andnd the fit lady grace coolidge stayed here for nearly three months from june through september 1927 while they were on vacation that summer. calvin coolidge took office in 1923 when he was vice president, warren harding died and so he served out the last little bit of the term and he was elected to his own term in 1924. he came to south dakota in 1927 when a lot of people were speculating we keep waiting that oneno for another term in 1928 d was widely expected that he would, but he came here in 19277 because looking for place to escape the t oppressive summer n washington, d.c. and mosquitoes and bugs and the tension of the white house. coolidge vetoed a farm bill and there was a farm depression going on and south dakota was the epicenter of that. crop prices and reduce by about 62

this is such a unique chapter of south dakota history that a lot of people don't know.dge usually one of the more prominent presidents historically, and so i say that people would be really surprised to know the president did come live in south dakota for three months. and didn't have as much fun as he did and i just had a really fun time discovering more layers to the story and all of the experiences that the coolidge news had here. and knowing that we come out here to the game lodge and we drive back to rapid city, really tracing his route and the history is really countable. just like a said, a unique chapter in history that we will never see repeated. i guess what i would like people to understand about coolidge and south dakota in the back hills and the remote book, is that he found such a wonderful time in the black hills, that it really brought him out of his shell. and it exposed him as may be a different kind of person. and people were used to and i loved how being here in the back black hills and seeing the natural beauty here, and being away from washington b

let's begin with nick watt and this tragedy in south dakota. nick, what are you learning? >> well, as you mentioned, fred, three people miraculously survived this crash and first responders have to contend with that horrific weather to rescue those three. they've been taken to the hospital in sioux falls. nine people dead on that plane. as you mentioned, among the dead two children. also we're told the pilot of the airplane. they were planning to fly west. about 600 miles or so to idaho falls. but that plane crashed shortly after takeoff. now, the faa and the ntsb are already investigating the cause and of course one major focus of that investigation will be that weather. as you say, a very bad winter storm moving through the area at the time of takeoff. low visibility. an inch of snow falling an hour. one local official tells us that weather was a factor in this, but that is just one local official. and of course ntsb will take a lot longer to come to any sort of determination. but the tragedy here, fred, nine people dead in this plane crash.

places like south dakota have seen blizzard-like conditions. nearly 50 million people across the country are under some kind of weather alert. on the west coast, the california mountains are getting heavy snow, and it's more rain and strong winds for the lower elevations. so let's turn to our meteorologist, pedram javaheri, to get some more detail on this. how many more days of horrendous travel are people looking at here? >> you know, rosemary, it's a very slow-moving system. that's the main problem with it. it doesn't help that we had the busiest travel day of the year in the past 24 hours, and of course the northeastern united states seeing the brunt of this very slow-moving system. you can easily pick out the center of circulation across the eastern great lakes as it gradually shifts on in towards the east. we think through much of monday and into early tuesday is when we finally see this system exit stage right. at this hour, snow showers across interior portions of new england, eastern areas of pennsylvania. some of the major metro cities

they were returning home from a hunting trip here in south dakota. that's when the small plane went down just after takeoff. let's talk about that small plane. the plane was a single-engine turbo-prop passenger aircraft. it's believed to have been carrying 12 people when it crashed saturday afternoon around a mile from the chamberlain airport. the area was under a winter storm warning at the time. prominent businessmen kirk and jim hansen are two of the victims. stockton hansen is also among the dead. he recently got married. an emergency official told a local paper the passengers ranged in ages from 7 up to 81, and the survivors were three men, two in their late 20s, and a teenager. speaking of those survivors, they are in critical condition today. the faa says inspectors are on the way to the crash site. they want to get to the bottom of what caused. this because of nasty winter weather conditions, they say that is taking longer than anticipated. gayle? >> terrible story. nine members of the same family. thank you so much. >>> the white house says
