benefit clause i suppose in the ncaa rulebook. it specifies that athletes are not permitted to accept anything of value really. related to their status as an athlete. that means a fan, a a booster,e would-be agent, a coach is not permitted to give anything of value be on what is specified in basically the ncaa consultation, x number of dollars for your books, et cetera, et cetera. anything beyond that is not permissible and will get you in trouble with the ncaa policeman. the ncaa open an investigation of that, as for unc to cooperate in that investigation. and by the end of the summer of 2010, it was was clear the also academic violations that were included in this initial investigation. i would say it really wasn't until the summer of 2011 that the scope of the ugliness really came to light. it reared its head. we began to suggest how bad things evidently were. this was in large part because there was one player, one football player who'd been suspended from the team in the fall of 2010 who was trying to get his eligibility back

from one group thinking it was the most exciting thing since winning the ncaa championship and another group thinking it is the dumbest thing anybody could think of doing and even the black communjity was concerned it would do nothing but exacerbate the race problem in chapel hill which had been ugly through the years. i only with ran finally because one person who said to me, you shouldn't run for mayor because the time is not right and i had been hearing that all my life as a black person living in the south and growing up, i was always told that the time wouldn't be right and i just decided well, let's make it right and that's when i declared i'd run for mayor and that's how it all started, but i chose to run for mayor not necessarily to win because i frankly still didn't think i had a prayer of winning but then i won. from that point on, it was a whole different life for me. i remember turning to my wife at the time the victory was announced and said ok. now that i've got it, what the heck am going to do with it but it was the beginning of a new life and it had certainly been a ver

so the ncaa opened an investigation and asked for umc to cooperate with the investigation. by the end of the summer of 2010, it was clear there were academic violations included in this initial investigation. i would say it wasn't until the summer 2011 that the scope of the ugliness came to light. it came to rear its head. we saw just how bad things evidently were. in large part, it was because there was one football player who had been suspended from the team in 2010 was trying to get his eligibility back and he was suing them to get his legibility back on the ground. the honor court through which some of his work had been referred, they said that he had only committed minor violations. for him however, he submitted lots of paperwork to the superior court including the paper itself and fans found the paper online and did their own investigation and found it had been heavily plagiarized. no one had noticed this before or called including the honor court or the athletic director. it eventually came out. in part because of the lawsuit and partly because of the investigative o
