as angus crawford mentioned in his report — caroline flack's management team have criticised the crown drop charges that she assaulted her boyfriend, even though he didn't support their case. earlier i spoke to our home affairs correspondent june kelly about the issues involved. the crown prosecution service, although they won't discuss this case, they will say that to bring any prosecution, it has to meet two benchmarks. first of all, there has to be a realistic prospect of conviction so they can'tjust take a case to court because they think somebody should be prosecuted, they have to think there could be a chance that the person who was in court and in the dock could be convicted and the other benchmark is that the case has to be in the public interest. in terms of caroline flack's mental state, if this case had got to court, her lawyers would have been able to have put evidence before the court about her mental state and that would have been considered by the magistrate who was dealing with the case because it was going to be a magistrate who dealt with this case, it wasn't deemed s

earlier, i spoke to our correspondent angus crawford who's been looking at more reaction to caroline. there is an element of anger now appearing on social media, very much directed at the media generally for its potential role, also at the crown prosecution service. her boyfriend lewis burton posted recently, saying his heart was broken, we had very something special. but he also said at the end of the post, i was not allowed to be there. i kept asking and asking, and that refers to the fact the court decided that she was not allowed contact with him ahead of the trial in march. her management company are clearly very angry with the cps. they said they pursued this when they knew how vulnerable she was, and they described it as a potential show trial. there is creeping in here a sense that the cps may have been at fault. that she was a victim of grotesque media interference in her life, as well. the difficulty with a case where someone takes their own life is that we do not know the whole circumstances and can never know what was going through her mind at the time she took the decisi

we want to go now to our exclusive interview with angus king from maine who just walked off the senate floor himself. thank you for joining us. what did you think of the closing arguments you just heard? >> well, it's hard not to just sort of be impressed by adam schiff's closing remarks. i don't care which side you were on. that was a powerful piece of lawyering. the thing i keep coming back to, though, ari, is the precedent here and, you know, democracy is unusual in world history. the norm is some kind of authorization. and we are 200-plus year experiment and i think what's going on right now is a step toward authorization. it is allowing an elected monarch and what the framers were worried about. that's why they putt the impeachment clause in. people said you don't need it because you have elections. they said, no, you have to have a check on somebody and particularly what makes it even more powerful in this case is the offense we're talking about involves meddling with the election. >> right. senator -- let me jump in -- >> the election is the cure and can't trust that the incumbe
