overnight, the boy scouts of america filed for bankruptcy.the youth organization faces allegations from thousands of abuse victims, but because of the filing, all civil litigation against the boy scouts will be suspended. marty savage is covering this. this has been more than a year in the making. what does this mean for the organization and all of those that have filed the lawsuits? >> it has an impact on both fronts, for the organization and for the litigation. let's start with the litigation. the lawsuits. there are hundreds of lawsuits that have been brought against the boy scouts of america, alleging sexual abuse. if you add up the participants in those lawsuits, there are thousands of alleged victims here. and attorneys have been speculating that the overall compensation would be in the billions of dollars. so the boy scouts decided that the way to go forward was to go into bankruptcy court. what that means is that those civil suits are suspended, it also means that all those victims who hoped to have their day in court to express the h

yang: growing up in florida, juan carlos rivera loved being a boy scout. >> i started to, you know, jus learn everything about suting, camping and, you know, do the merit badges. whatever scouting entailed, i was all over it because i liked it it was fun. >> yang: by the time he was a young teen, he was a life scout, the second-highest rank, and wns taking art lesrom an assistant to the scoutmaster. >> yang: and then one day he summoned me to go upstairs in the house to a bedroom. and that's when the incident. took pla that's when everything changed. >> yang: rivera says that was the day he lost interest in scouting and quit. for 20 years he never told anyone why: he had been molested. now he's suing the boy scouts of america and is telling his story publicly for the first time. >> it angers me that it happened because was a part of my childhood that should have been innocent. you know, i didn't seek it. it just happened. >> yang: rivera's case is among about 2,000 collected by an "liance of lawyers called abused in scouting." many as 70 new claims.sts as their ollient is 93 years old;

to thethey had written boy scouts and girl scouts to come and organize the young people. we had nine or 10 troops in our camp. we had our own jamboree. scout leaders would write to the boy scouts and say come on in and join us in our jamboree. invariably they said we are not coming in. there is barbed wire around the camps. there are military guards with machine guns. we are not coming in. they are p.o.w.'s. our scout leaders would write back, these are not pows, they are boy scouts of america. they go after the same merit badges you do. none of them came in. one day, we got notice that a boy scout troop from cody was going to come in. they came in and we did a knot tying contest, how to start a fire without a match. all these things. we got paired off with the kids from cody to build a hut. in wyoming, it could rain anytime, so in order to protect the tent, you had to build a moat around. this kid built a beautiful moat. and he said, you know there's a kid in that troupe who is a bully and we don't like him. would you mind if we cut the water to exit? towards that tent?

the boy scouts said it has liabilities between 100 billion and assets between 1 billion and $10 billion year the group said it believed nearly 8,000 former scout leaders sexually abused more than 12,000 children, and tim kosnauf, an attorney who's represented some of these alleged victims is with me now. thank you so much for being here, tim. the question, what does this mean for the alleged victims? what do they do now? >> well, thank you, brooke, for having us on. i'm part of a consortium of four law firms. we banded together about a year ago. we're called abusedinscouting.com. when we saw the boy scouts were setting this up for bankruptcy, we realized that they were trying to strip people of their legal rights to come forward and pursue justice, and so just in the last 11 months, 2,000 men approximately have come forward and hired us to bring claims on their behalf. that's what precipitated this bankruptcy filing. what it means and the most important message i'd like to get across in the short time we have is that the bankruptcy court will set a deadline, a cutoff for men to come for
