kimberly atkins, betsy woodruff swan, and dan pfeiffer.author of the new book, untrumping america, a plan to make america a democracy again. welcome, everybody. mr. phifer, i'll start with you since you have been on a winning presidential campaign in the past. this is where we are with bernie sanders right now. it's very interesting. among all voters, a majority of voters have reservations about somebody over the age of 75, somebody who had a recent heart attack, and somebody who is a self-described socialist. among democratic voters, they're not concerned. 44% say the same about something over 75, 42% about somebody who is a socialist. what does this tell you about bernie sanders' future as the nominee? >> those polls also show that bernie sanders is beating donald trump in almost every head-to-head matchup, so what it tells me is bernie sanders absolutely can win this election. he comes to it with a specific set of potential vulnerabilities, primarily around labeling something unpopulary, and we talk about his weakness and strengths. he

dan pfeiffer is a former senior adviser to president obama. dan, thanks so much for joining me. first, i want to get your impressions about what jeff was just saying there in terms of south carolina being a make or break state for joe biden. what does it look like for him in your eyes? >> i agree with jeff, he absolutely has to win. and to be able to be pushed forward and have success on super tuesday where he's trailing bernie sanders in a lot of states, he needs to win. it's do or die. >> the title of your book, "un-trumping america," i want to ask you, bernie sanders is the most popular democratic candidate, and he is also polarizing. do you think that he is the answer to un-trumping america, given that he would likely turn away anti-trump republicans, d moderates, independents who might otherwise come out for another democrat to beat trump? >> i'm not prepared to -- i'm not prepared to know that bernie sanders would definitely push those voters out. he's actually in some polling the most popular democrat among the obama/trump voters who helped push the election to donald tru

joining me now is dan pfeiffer. he is the author of "untrumping america." there's a ton in here. right now and long-term advice for democrats. i want to do a lightning round on these. you say in general, republicans have -- and alisyn doesn't like it when i swear. they have a bass hole advantage over democrats. what do you mean by that? >> i think the greatest asymmetry in politics is democrats view political power as a means to accomplish a policy goal. republicans view political power as a means to an end. that gives them a fundamental edge in politics. because once you have that attitude, almost anything is on the table. and the media has bought into that. so if mitch mcconnell does something cynical and savvy.emocratic, that'see if a democrat does something like that, it's hypocrisy. i'm not arguing the democrats should adopt mcconnell's tactics. we have to understand that trump is an extension, not an aberration of the political party. >> and dealing with the president, you say don't be a paler shade of orange. what do you mean? >> you hear people saying if democrats are as
