places where sanders was strong in '16 and strong last night, places around iowa city, iowa state university here in ames, places where sanders probably ran up the score, i think would put him in contention, potentially, to win that statewide popular vote, raw vote, whatever you want to call it. perhaps for buttigieg, just looking at that entrance poll, we will see if that bears out. but maybe more of an opportunity to be competing in the state delegate category. that's one thing i'm going to be looking for when we start to see those results. were those entrance polls correct? that's always something you don't know for sure. and if they were correct, if they were capturing the essence of the race, is that dynamic there where one candidate is doing better in this metric and another in that metric. why do we have all of these metrics? it bears remembering where this came from. it came from this, four years ago at this time you mentioned this, the 2016 iowa democratic caucuses, the closest in history. the margin was four state delegates. clinton beat sanders by four state delegates. in the wake

the interesting thing, though, is, it's not complete yet, but if you look at johnson county, iowa citynd biggest in the state in terms of the turnout it's going to have here, it looks like it's 82% in right now, they've got 17,660 who have turned out right now. the number was just over 19,000 in 2016. and again, with 18% still to come in, so you may go over in a place like johnson and be under in the rural areas. of course, that speaks to that broader sort of shift between the democratic and republican party, maybe with democrats being stronger and stronger in metro areas, maybe a little bit weaker in rural areas. also speaks to something we saw in the entrance poll, which is the share of people under 30 in this democratic caucus, 24% this year, just 18% in 2016. so a jump there. >> fascinating. >>> we're going to be watching those turnout numbers in part because it tells you something about what happened in iowa last night, but also because i think it's reasonable, from previous elections, to extrapolate a little bit from the amount of enthusiasm showed by iowa democrats toward the ge

. ♪ host: longtime iowa journalist david e epson joining us -- david yepsen joining us from the capital cityf iowa, countdown to the caucus. we will spend an hour talking about times past and what will happen this year. let me start by asking when iowa caucus first hit the political radar? hitd: the first time they the political radar was 1972. iowa was -- always had caucuses but it was in 1972 that the democratic party started operating under new rules. i always tell people that now caucuses as we know them today were born in 1968 in the streets of chicago. the democratic party decided to open up the process so more people could attend and in doing so in 1972, you had a series of events, at the national convention, congressional district conventions and county conventions and precincts. so the state party, in order to allow more people to participate, backed this up in the calendar into february of 1972, which was very early. that was the first year it really became significant. george mcgovern won second-place. it was unexpected. i think it is important for a couple of reasons. gary hart,

from iowa city, jared, you are next. good evening. did you caucus tonight? caller: i did caucus tonight. i caucused in a town called morse north of iowa city. it is the grand precinct. and it was amy klobuchar. we only got one delegate to go to the county convention from our caucus. it was a very small caucus. amy klobuchar had the most support. so she won. it seemed pretty even. all of the support was even between biden, buttigieg, bernie, and elizabeth warren. it just -- seeing those results for the first time, it looks like that what is what i was thinking. it doesn't seem like anyone is going to pull away. it was a very nice event, very friendly. we all really -- it was a nice moment to sit down and talk to people we had not seen any while. i feel like the thing everybody talked about with how everyone expressed the way they think their candidates specifically can beat donald trump, and we all talked about the ways that we perceive of the other candidates as well. and how some biden supporters don't like pete or this and that or bernie and elizabeth. the

this is the college area, iowa city, johnson city, university of iowa, sanders leads, warren did well, buttigieg got 21%. but sanders would hope for a big lead over buttigieg. the rural areas of the states, the outline counts that buttigieg did well in, you get more bang for your buck. so therefore it's a swaugituati with almost three quarters of the vote if had, buttigieg is ready to say i won the delegate contest. and sanders is poised to tell folks more people turned out to support me. i had more supporters at these caucuses than pete buttigieg. they both might make a valid claim. >> how does this impact new hampshire? it's less than one week. >> that's the question. i don't think we have the graphic here. i can tell you there's an overnight tracking poll that's coming out from our friends at suffolk university, it shows sanders leading there so far but buttigieg has moved up several points. perhaps we've been speculating here, the strange nature, the delayed nature of the returns from iowa was it going to affect candidates' ability to get momentum out of this? perhaps. perhaps fol

ran strong in the progressive eastern part of the state, and looking at some of the counties here, iowa city, college town, johnson county, one of the most progressive and liberal counties there, and then lynn county to scott county where davenport is, and this is the progressive eastern part of the state, and is bernie sanders running away with the progressive vote or more in a tight race with elizabeth warren for those votes? we will see it in the eastern part of the states, and some of the dynamics, but the main thing for me is does it all fill in or parts of the state fill in, because as jeff zeleny just said all of the campaigns are on edge and some of them are suspicious, and all of them are anxious, and so we will look at the key parts of the state to see who is ahead and this is what matters most, the delegate vote, but as david said, the popular vote as well, and so are we going to get votes from everywhere and the rest is going to fill in or select places around the state, and then we have still more mystery. >> because the question is where is there is a biggest question mark of t

sanders and warren, iowa city, university of iowa, big college area, so sanders and warren cleaning upe. buttigieg back now. if you use the turnout figures we've seen in the past, this is probably 11% or so of the turnout statewide. >> cutting to the chase, can we project from this 61% to the final numbers? is there anything in the pattern we've watched that would say these are random numbers, therefore a good way to project or what? >> here's what i can show you. the vote yet to come, the bigger the bubble the more precincts there are in the county. that is pope county, des moines. mother load, blackhawk northern university iowa, davenport, cedar rapids. if you take the total number of precincts that are to report still from counties that pete buttiegieg is currently leading in, there are 253 precincts to come from counties where buttigieg is ahead. from counties where sanders is ahead right now, there are 259 precincts still to come. so there's a little bit more there. sanders versus buttigieg -- >> it looks random, it looks good. >> looks like it's going to be close. >> here's anoth
