for that, kelly in seoul, south korea, and matt bradley in london. kelly, cases are spiking. how hard a time are they having containing this outbreak? >> well, it's a problem at this point. there are a couple of reasons why. first, they're not quarantining any towns. they haven't put in any travel restrictions really other countries have done that in a defensive measure. and they haven't restricted any sort of major travel. you can still go to where the main outbreak is. the other issue is this church group. it's a relatively secretive church sect. this is where really the heart of this outbreak is, south korean authorities believe. they are extremely secretive. it's believed that they may have travelled to china, and that may be the connection to coronavirus here in south korea, because they were so secretive, perhaps the thinking is that members were not reporting that they had either a, been to china or that they had symptoms, hence, you have an outbreak and a spreading of the virus. just to give you an idea, chris, this church group apparently has about 200,000 members sp

let's get more details with nbc's matt bradley. i'm wondering where things go from here. thousand new cases in the last 24 hours globally. the world health organization is trying to coordinate this response. then you have china and criticism over the way it dealt with the epidemic including just sharing information. what's next? >> reporter: yeah, you know as you mentioned, joshua, it doesn't sound like a lot of good news. you have noticed the news is migrating out from china and into other countries. and that's really, really troubling. now, there is one glimmer of hope. in china we heard that there was 648 new cases across the country. 97 new deaths. but most of those cases are concentrated in hubei province. that's the heart of the epidemic. that means in china we're getting some early indications that this might kind of be contained. that could change at any time. and the real problem as you mentioned is now they have this virus spreading on multiple contents. the world health organization is very concerned about when this virus might reach health systems that even ar

joining us now from london, matt bradley, with the latest. china, of course, the epicenter of this outbreak. are they responding at all to these growing concerns from other countries? >> yeah, we haven't heard much from china. they're very preoccupied with containing the massive outbreak within their borders. we have heard from global authorities. the world health organization, they're kind of taking the lead on this. they don't obviously have a role in implementing controls and trying to improve the situation. they do monitor and offer advice. we heard from the head of the world health organization saying there's still a window of opportunity to contain that virus. that to me sounds like a mission, that window of opportunity is really fast closing and that the world organization's governments need to do more in order to contain this. china has been doing as much as they can, but really the news today as you mentioned is not about china. it's about this is moving out aboard and we're seeing independent nodes of epidemics throughout the world

matt bradley joins us now from london with more on his life and legacy. good to have you with us.about how he's likely to be remembered and his legacy for good or bad on egypt. >> yeah, he was in many ways a symbol of the stasis and the politics that proceeded the arab spring in 2011. he also became a symbol of those failed resolutions. you mention that 30 year rule over egypt. special laws that acquired the security. that style of leadership was rejected by millions of people back in 2011. not just in egypt, but really throughout the entire arab world. a lot of is that style of leadership, it's been restored. either those countries have been riveted by leaderships, that style -- it didn't really have an ideology, mubarak didn't seem to have one. he had that pursuit of stability. that was his main goal. economic growth, freedom of expression, all of those were secondary in mubarak's egypt to that single minded desire to remain in power. and avoid chaos. up until that revolution in 2011, that's exactly what mubarak did, he lived to be 91 years old, survived multiple assassination a

matt bradley from london where he is covering what's going on in the world. molly, what is the situation where you are? >> reporter: hey, ali. cases in italy hit 400 today. but to be clear, the sample size is expanding. the data set is expanding. not necessarily 100 people got sick overnight. it is that italian authorities are actually testing a lot more people but we are in the north of italy, milan, about an hour from here though is the red zone. 50,000 people are essentially quarantined, fenced in. no one in, no one out for 14 days and talking to people inside. they're not terribly panicked right now. they think the authorities have it under control, working from home, kids are staying home from school and lining up at the supermarket wearing gloves and masks and trusting that the italian authorities are doing everything they can to contain it. at least to the best of their abilities. >> let's talk to matt. what is going on in the rest of the world and most importantly iran where there seems to be a higher mortality rate than the rest of the world? >> yeah

joining us from london with more on this, nbc news's matt bradley. what do we know? >> reporter: this is really an evolving situation. what we've heard so far from the u.s. military -- and this is in a statement -- that a combined u.s. and afghan force conducting an operation in nan ga har proch province was engaged by direct fire. we are assessing the situation and will provide further updates as they become available. that's what we've gotten officially from the u.s. military. a "new york times" correspondent in afghanistan, he said that this might be what you would call a green on blue incident, and that's one in which afghan soldiers fire upon american troops, and of course we've seen this a lot in what has now become rekrercently america's longest war, the longest in history. this "new york times" correspondent said there may be as many as five or six fatalities. none of this has been verified independently by nbc news except for that statement from the u.s. government saying that u.s. soldiers had engaged in enemy fire. we're trying to get all that information

matt bradley live in london.what have you been able to glean from the agreement. >> reporter: that's right, guys. afghan and american troops, they woke up this morning to an unfamiliar sound, quiet, and after more than 18 years, the guns may have mostly fallen silent as you mentioned on the longest war in u.s. history. that reduction in violence is held for more than 16 hours. so far, there have been no reports of any violations. the terminology is important. this isn't just a truce or cease fire. no one is expecting hostilities to end completely. the idea is if this reduction in violence lasts for at least a week, then the u.s. and taliban will get together on february 29th and sign a longer term deal, and that could eventually lead to the permanent withdrawal of the more than 13,000 american soldiers who are still in afghanistan along with a lot of their nato allies who number in the thousands. this is all still a really big "if," there was a peace deal agreement in september, and the president scrapped it. tha
