"it is christmas!" this was a generation of value that did not pass on to us. my grandmother was protestant. they were taught by the women's temperance union to be ashamed of drinking. so there was a stigma that her generation grew up with, and that lasted well into the 1970's and 1980's. i think the baby boomers are the first generation that did not have a stigma around alcohol that earlier generations did. drinking is just what we do. it's how we socialize. there is no stigma or shame. it is part of our lives. and it is easy for us to judge, but what my grandmother went was quite different. she also insisted that she didn't drink at all. after she died, we were cleaning some stuff out and we found a liquor cupboard in the kitchen.
