let's begin with delia gallagher in italy.number of deaths in the past day staggering, almost 1,000. what are things like in italy. >> reporter: listen, jake, on the numbers, statistics are pointing to the fact that these patients are overwhelmingly elderly, with two or three underlying health conditions. only 1% of the patients who have died are under the age of 50. so of course we know italy has a large elderly population that may be playing a factor in these high numbers. other countries with different demographics may not see the same kind of death rate, we hope. the number that a lot of experts are looking at right now is the question of positive new cases. and with the exception of yesterday, we've seen that go down. so that has led experts to say that there is cautious optimism. we had the president of the italian health institute say that italy may not yet have reached its peak but that he thinks it should happen in the next few days. so that is obviously an important number that the experts are tracking here, jake. >>

cnn's delia gallagher is live in rome with more for us. delia? >> reporter: that's right, laura. total now of 28,000 cases nationwide and, of course, half of those are in the north. so the north is really still under quite a lot of pressure. the focus now in the north is on hospital beds. they are building a new temporary hospital with some 400 beds according to the president of the lombardi region. an american ngo called samaritan's purse has come over to the town of crimona. they are building a 60 bed temporary hospital. there's also been a call for blood donations. that has become important in all of the regions throughout italy, especially in the north. the prime minister yesterday announced 25 billion euros to go towards this crisis. they say that's the first step. there will be another one in april that will go towards health care, but also wages for workers who are finding themselves right now without their monthly salary. pope francis as well on sunday walked the deserted streets of rome. he left the vatican briefly in the afternoon and he went to two churches in rome. on

delia gallagher is live for us. hi, delia. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. difficult numbers were announced yesterday with some 3,400 people who have died from the coronavirus. the ministry of health released a report just the day before yesterday kind of analyzing the numbers of those who had died. they said the medium average age of those who had died was 80 years old and that many of them had two or three conditions prior to getting coronavirus and that italy, of course, has a large elderly population so that may also account for these numbers. now it's interesting that the vice president of the chinese red cross was here in italy yesterday and among other things he said that the peak in wuhan arrived after one month of lockdown. they started to see the numbers go down. the northern regions of italy have been in lockdown since march 8th so we're still very much in the midst of watching these numbers rise. we're at 41,000 right now. experts aren't really trying to make any kind of predictions if it continues to follow the chinese model, then obviously they

good to see you, delia. so the numbers are still shocking, it has to be said, but we are seeing a new trend that is perhaps giving italy some hope right now. talk to us about that. >> reporter: that's right, rosemary. of course we are still very much in the heart of this crisis with very high numbers, but what has happened in the past two days is that we have seen a slight decline in the number of total cases and in the number of deaths. officials are saying they are cautiously optimistic about this, but of course it is not time for italy to let its guard down. we are at the two-we can mark, rosemary. this is when we wanted to see these numbers go down. they hope, obviously, that trend will continue. the health assessor in lombardy, which has been hardest hit, even the slight decline has helped to boost morale on the ground so that is important. they are obviously policing very much all around the country. there have been drones flying over the beaches here in rome to make sure that people understand the imp

delia gallagher is in rome for us. and delia, we will start with you because i mean the number of dead in italy, it's too many to count. it just seems to keep getting worse. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the latest are 4,032 people that have died from covid-19. the total case numbers in italy stand at some 47,000. of those who have died, we have one report from the ministry of health that takes a look at the data of those patients and says that the average median age of those on have died 80 years old. 98% had one or more underlying issues. we know that italy has a very large elderly population. so the convention in these early days from authorities is that that has something to do with the high right. death. another interesting statistic out of that report is that the average age of those who contract the disease in italy is 63 versus 46 years of age in china. that also goes to the hypothesis that this is something that is affecting at least in italy those who are holder. the big push now this weekend is on getti

many thanks to delia gallagher, joining us live from rome. now to al in madrid. cases, al, have surged across spain. what's the latest on those numbers? >> reporter: hi, rosemary. we are expecting the latest figures in a couple of hours' time. the government had been giving out the figures twice a day, midday and evening. now they've gone to just once a day. that's coming up around noon spanish time. the current figure's more than 11,000 cases. that's a huge increase from just a week ago, and nearly 500 deaths. now, a couple of images from spain. i'm right in the city center. there's almost no one here. what we saw earlier this day, military troops, army troops patrolling. now the police are back out patrolling. they want to make sure nobody comes here. a five-minute walk from here is the spanish parliament. it's the weekly question-and-answer period for the prime minister. i just saw him walk in on the television with the health minister and interior minister in charge of all the police and security forces. there are about 20 people in the parliament because eve

delia, thank you. delia gallagher in rome. >>> apart from italy, spain has the second highest number of cases. al goodman joins us. clearly spain is bracing for the worst. >> reporter: it is, john. the figures that we have are 20 hours old already. the government until a couple of days ago was releasing the figures at midday spain time, in the evening spain time. now we have figures from 20 hours ago, 11,000 cases and nearly 500 deaths. the significant figure there is the death rate shot up pretty significantly from a day earlier. about 300. i'll give you a sense of how this order for the people to stay in is now being enforced. we've had the police, city police and the national police telling people to get out of the square if you don't have authorization to be here. this bus has brought in a unit of army soldiers who are patrolling around here. their idea is to reinforce the police because the idea is to keep people separated and make sure that everybody understands that you can't go out unless you'v

cnn's delia gallagher has been following this story about italy from rome and it just seems like every day when people are looking for good news, it just doesn't come, delia. >> well, that's right, natalie. this has been a difficult weekend here in italy with the high death tolls. you know, out of the 4,800 total dead, 3,000 of them are in the lombardy region. it's one of the richest regions in italy and has the best hospital structures. so, obviously, there is concern that were these kind of numbers to spread to other regions in italy, if lombardy can't handle it, it would be difficult for other regions. one official did say that experts had warned them that this weekend, which is two weeks from their lockdown in the north, would show some of the worst numbers. and that their hope is that by monday they will see a reduction in infections and in deaths. you can imagine that it has created solidarity throughout the country. there was a call for 300 doctors to go to the north from other parts of the country. they got 7,000 responses on that, natalie. so certainly italians stepping up try

and cnn's delia gallagher joins us now from rome. good to see you, delia. the numbers are shocking, but there appears to be a glimmer of hope in the small italian town where this outbreak began. what more are you learning about that? >> reporter: that's right, rosemary. the town in northern italy which was one of the first to report a cluster of cases and has been on lockdown since the end of february yesterday reported zero new cases of the virus. and indeed, countrywide, italy's seen its third consecutive day of a decrease in the number of positive new cases. of course, this doesn't mean that anyone should be letting their guard down. the health authorities here are really trying to get the message across that it is more important than ever to be vigilant. take a look at how some of italy's mayors are trying to get that message across. italy is enforcing one of europe's strictest lockdowns. no one is allowed outside, unless it's for an essential reason, but not everyone is sticking to the rules. >> translator: ping pong is not allowed! go home and play on

thank you so much, delia. now to al goodman in madrid. we talk about the inventive steps that countries are having to take to try to handle the case loads they're getting. what is the medical staff doing there? >> hi, natalie. well, you've mentioned the madrid convention center which has been turned into a 5,500-bed hospital for coronavirus patients. a couple of days ago, two hotels in the capital that were closed because of no clients were turned into hospital hotels to take some of the early and late stage coronavirus patients staffed by young doctors. now seven more hotels are being added on to that. really, it's a scramble as the prime minister warned on saturday night the worst is yet to come. the next wave is going to test the limits of the medical system so they've been beefing up as we've talked here this weekend, you and i, that they've mobilized 50,000 doctors and nurses. a small number of them are retired but most of them are young doctors at the end of their medical school training or just out of medical school, a couple years

cnn's delia gallagher is live in rome.s like the situation is getting worse by the day. >> reporter: well, look, laura, it's a really trying time right now. a lot of italians we've spoken to they can't remember a time like this where you have a lockdown in the north with checks on people coming in and out of those areas, but also in the rest of the country as of yesterday we have museums closed, historic sites like the coliseum closed. all social engagements are off for the next 3 1/2 weeks. public spaces closed. it's affecting the daily lives of italians here with the consequent concern with the economic repercussions in the tourism industry, restaurant, hotel business. a while ago we had a statement from the finance ministry saying they are going to help support workers and those industries that are going to be affected by this temporary economic downturn. but the message from the prime minister on down to the italians is to accept this temporary disruption in their daily lives, at least for the next 3 1/2 weeks in the h

delia gallagher is in rome. what the progress of the outbreak is there, for americans watching at home, one reason is because the u.s. numbers at least early on seemed to be tracking italy growth rate. what is happening in italy today? >> well, look, jim, what is happening we're up to about 600,000 total cases. what is important to note are yesterday's numbers, that is that with respect to saturday, they showed a slight decrease in total number of cases, down about 800 total cases, and about 150 deaths. that is significant, jim, because we have reached the two-week peak for lockdown. sunday was two weeks from the lockdown in the north, wednesday will be two weeks from the total country-wide lockdown and this is what they're saying is the crucial week for italy, that they want to see the numbers start to decline. so even though that's a very minor decline there reported on sunday, we're watching those numbers to see if that trend continues, that's what experts are hoping to see. as you mentioned, jim, the u.s. de
