emily: i view some of the khan academy schedule, my children have used it.e same time, i am working from home, anchoring an entire show from home. it is hard to obviously keep children engaged or sometimes it is just keeping them distracted for the time i need to work. i had my son barge into my room today in the middle of a radio hit. arents, i think many of us are putting pressure on ourselves to have some sort of structure but get our own work done. how much as we as parents be expect our children to actually get out of this time? sal: so, the first thing until the parents, and same boat, i have three young kids at home. they are coping at different levels, to different degrees. i tell parents there is so much to think about right now. don't beat up on yourself. we are going to figure this out together. if you want to get started, just focus on the basics at first. an hour of reading, an hour of math. we can help you there. we have book lists that can be helpful. that is a great start. i've got reassurances from home schooling parents that as long as you

i spoke to the ceo of khan academy, a nonprofit educational organization that offers online videos toion users globally. there are a lot of actors trying to put things together so we can keep students learning. the reality is there are some places that have already canceled schools native wide. nationwide. it will probably accelerate in the u.s. over the next few weeks. the reality is, they are likely to last through summer because we will probably not see peak cases or several weeks now. one logistic change that could happen is it could shift summer vacation up a few months and just resume class in the back half of summer. assuming that is not going to happen or we see some type of hybrid, a lot of districts are thinking of how to virtualize. there's a lot of complexity there. you can operationally do it, but there are equity issues of if all students have access. we are thinking about how do we put our materials together, they are all free and accessible, looking for ways of teachers and parents and officials to keep track of what students are doing. how do we make it easy to use if

salman khan is founder of khan academy and offers free educational content on line.good morning. one of our colleagues posted a picture of her kids who -- their school is shut, but every morning they get dressed, puts their backpacks on, and pretend they're on the bus. just to psychologically prepare themselves for the classroom experience which is at the kitchen table. so do you have tips for how parents and kids can get motivated when they're going to school but not going anywhere? >> yeah. this is the first i've heard about the pretend bus. it's a good idea. i think that's the right idea. the more that students can get into a schedule, they get up in the morning, have their breakfast, get on the same time frame, and you know, what i've told parents is a lot of parents are psychiatristing out including in my house -- stressing out, including in my house, i have three kids. i told them give yourself a break. focus on the basics. if your child of any age is able to focus on math and reading, two hours a day, that's a great start. there are other resources available.

where you could use resources like khan academy. we have math from kindergarten -- actually, pre-k.we are trying to put it all together so that parents and teachers and students know how to structure their day. and we are also trying to do things like daily live streams. we are trying to figure out ways to do even office hours anyone in the country can sign up for if they want help with things. >> let me ask your advice to a parent who maybe hasn't cracked open a calculus or precalculus textbook in a while. and the parent wants to encourage that but really has no facility for the material anymore. it's been a while since they played around with one variable or two. >> so i think the -- one, no one should feel stressed about it. that's why we exist as a nonprofit to support your student at all of these different age levels. i think the number one role of the parent is to help create the motivation and the structure in the day. make sure that kids get up in the morning. change out of their pjs just like they would on a normal day. have a nice, very organized place in the house where i
