how many specific tribes in history do you try to explore in the space you have now on the national mall? >> >> we believe there are something around 2000 separate native cultural communities in the western hemisphere there are 573 indian tribes recognized by the united states as eligible for a government to government relationship with the united states. there are several hundred in canada and in central and south america, the descendents of many of the great civilizations that we all know about still exist and still live in some ways, in very much the same way they were living at the time of contact. how many are representative in a given moment? a handful. we can only present a limited number in the space we have and with the resources we have, so i think it is fair to say we will never be finished in presenting the variety of native american peoples that exist in the western hemisphere. >> what is your guiding principle in how you tell that story? if is it a story that may never be finished with so many different stories to tell? i think the guiding principle that set this museum apa

this is also the significance of having a home on the national mall. the smithsonian as a treasure house of americana or a lens on our national identity , as powerful as that is, offers only a very limited portrait of the scope of the place. so, there are many, many museums -- i mentioned 19 national history, sculpture, art, air and space, native american culture, in new york and in washington. african art, american art, design. the cooper-hewitt in new york is on the bottom there. and, the national zoo which got its start behind the castle building, trying to preserve the american buffalo from going extinct. but, there is much, much more than these museums that we know. there are nearly a dozen research centers, and the kind of work that is going on behind the scenes is really extraordinary. a tropical research institute in panama, which goes back more than 100 years. the smithsonian went down there during the construction of the panama canal to do a photo environmental research study to understand the impacts of joining up those two watersheds. there

. >> how often are those people on the ground there at the museum on the national mall doing that on a daily basis at the museum? >> we receive a lot of native visitors, and a lot of native people have business in washington. we like the idea that when they come to washington they come over here to spend some time and maybe to have lunch. the real research work takes place at our cultural resources center in suitland, maryland, the home of our collections. we have something north of 800,000 items in our collection, and we receive tribal groups who come in to look at what we have that originated in their community, and it is a wonderful exchange because we can show them what we have, and they can tell us what it is because all too often, when the experts were out there collecting from native communities, they were not sure what it was they got, and so we have many of our collections to this day are still mislabeled because the original collector did not really know what it was. and so they will come to us and tell us, no, this is what that is and this is how it was used. so it enriche

you've probably seen the smithsonian castle on the national mall. so some of the sandstone quarries, eventually when you dug too deep, you would hit these deep red veins and sometimes the stone would turn completely blood red. so that's why we call it washington brownstone. made in the early part of the 19th century. that is sandstone, it's just red sandstone. from stafford county it was primarily gray. you can see the flecks, there's flecks of red within the stone itself but by stripping all the paint we could see the intricate detail of the carvings because you have to imagine layer of paint, layer of paint -- all of a sudden all of this is globbed. you can't see the carvings or see anything so it took 25 years but they finished it during the clinton administration and there are still parts of the white house and they saw it when they started removing paint, that there are still scorch marks you can see. now on the exterior, it's pretty much all painted. this is actually downstairs. we were on the ground floor quarter but behind it, the basement a
