west point is about 50 miles outside of new york city.y close to the red hot center of the american epidemic. west point had decided that it's graduation would be, its graduation would be postponed with coronavirus and cadets were sent home to spring break and told not to come back and finish classes online and per "the new york times" the pandemic left it unclear whether a graduation ceremony would happen at west point at all. but then, presidential drama ensued. naturally. right before the air force academy's graduation. the one one we showed you, president trump was asked about the fact that vice president pence was expected to be the air force academy commencement speaker. when president trump was asked about that, quote mr. trump never wanted to be up staged abruptly announced he, in fact, would be speaking at west point. quote, that was news to everyone including officials at west point according to three people involved with or briefed on event. the academy was looking at the option of a delayed commencement in june but yet to comp

speech, making his first speech at a west point graduation. mark hertling. not only a former cadet but also taught at the academy for three years. he has a lot of knowledge here. thank you, general, and thank you for your service. >> and one of our sons is a west point graduate as well, and our daughter-in-law. a little bit of connection with the military. >> some humble bragging there. >> exactly. >> well deserved. well-deserved. listen, i was just going to say that you're both a graduate and a parent of a graduate at west point, but you said it first. so what do you think of this decision? >> well, you know, the president was always scheduled this year to speak at the west point, the u.s. military academy. they rotate every four years between him and the secretary of defense, the vice president, and the chairman of the joint chiefs. so this was his year to go to west point. it's a critically important place to speak. it's inspirational. but that's from the standpoint of the speaker, don. and i'll be honest with you. the graduation week is mu

yoi joining us is barbara starr and a west point grad and a parent of a west point grad.ra, i want to start with you. how did this come to pass and how is it going to work? >> well, i think that vice president mike pence probably set the precedent several days ago. he went out to the air force academy graduation. west point, however, is a little bit different. the cadets are at home. head left west point many days ago because of the pandemic. so now to make this all happen, they will have to return. the likelihood they will be in some days of isolation and testing bfr the ceremony. there is every reason to believe there will be social distancing at the ceremony. we saw that at the air force academy. not clear about family attendance at this point. it's an interesting case because the cadets were already going to have to return to the west point at some point this summer to collect their belongings, check out of their rooms as the new class already is getting ready to come in. >> all right, general hurdling, as someone who graduated as part of that magnificent ceremony onc

that was news to west point. he had long been the planned speaker for the may commencement that had been rescheduled, but west point didn't have an alternative plan finalized yet. and they had been in talks with the president. the white house had made clear to west point that he was still interested in doing this. this is -- he's spoken at all the military academies except for west point. this is sort of the crowning thing, a great optic for a re-election year. the president really didn't want to give this up. but he kind of kblublurted it on response to a question about the vice president giving the commencement speech at the air force academy. and never one to be upstaged, the president had to say that he too was giving an important commencement speech this year, and that scrambled west point to have to -- didn't realize it was final, and that made it final. so like the businesses and chief executives who learned they were on the task force when they heard the president say their names, west point also was take

move up for upp upperclassmen, he made announcement -- he was going to west point.ow apparently, thanks to a spur of moment decision, 1,000 cadets across the country will be summoned back to west point. which is by the way just north of hard-hit new york city. let's bring in medal of honor recipient and military analyst, jack jacobs who teaches at west point. i wanted to talk to you since i saw this story. i guess my question is, and i understand the chain of command, he's the commander in chief, was there not anyone you're potentially endangering the health of what is truly america's finest, our future. >> i'm sure some of them said so. he's the commander in chief. he issued the order. two choices -- follow the order or you resign. i haven't seen any resignations yet. it may very well be maybe it's still to be determined but for now i think the plans are, he's going to come to west point on june 13th and give the commencement address. >> so these cadets, take me through what that means for them. >> well, you know, you always have to sksh the old question -- who ben

you don't want the military graduation at west point to be a backdrop for the president. ing seen how he has performed on the national stage every day with these press briefings, are you concerned about that point, that these cadets are being brought back to the west point academy for this graduation which is an honorable moment but is going to provide a political rally for the president? >> look, the president is the commander in chief and the military is nonpartisan and so they're very excited to both have a graduation and to have someone of the stature of the commander in chief who gives those remarks and hopefully those remarks would be as least politicized as possible. this president likes to bask in the glory of the military. he does many things that values the military. and in a number of ways has acted in ways that are against the militaries. he's taken hundreds of millions of dollars that should go to training, construction and unlawfully moved them over to build his wall. he's pardoned military criminals and insisted that they graduate -- that they be able to ret

and apparently no one including west point is going to do that. so now west point is out there gathering their cadets who have been scat toward the winds to come back from a commencement. >> yes, during one of these briefings he was asked about vice president mike pence's trip, and he is always not one to be up staged and he sort of blurted out he too was giving a commencement address at one of the nation's military academy, and that was news to west point. they -- the president had long been the planned speaker for commencement in may, but obviously those plans were called off. the school had been weighing a lot of different options what a plan would look like. the difference between west point commencement and air force academy it had kept all the adets there so they would been quarantined. west point had already sent cadets home, so this means calling back 1,000 or so people to campus in newark, a state one of the hot spots of the coronavirus outbreak, having them quarantined. and there's a lot of questions about is this all worth it for the pr

if you are a west point cadet, gone home, been in quarantine.t risks will these cadets be facing to get to west point? >> right. we have to remember these cadets are all across the country right now, unlike the situation at the air force academy where they were still all on campus. we are talking about people traveling from all corners of the country back to new york. as you have reported so wem ll earlier. we don't know the impacts. healthy people are becoming very sick from coronavirus and these young officers will be put at risk. >> president trump said he was asked to be the commencement speaker at west point, but you say that is not true. how do you know that? >> they have contingencies, doing one later in the summer or doing a virtual one. but instead of listening to the milita military for recommendation, the president decided to make the decision without telling the military ahead of time and go through that planning process. the same thing he has done in so many other sevcenarios, withdrawing troops from syria, and just recently, the pr

the west point graduation in june. 1,000 cadets are going to have to travel back. how are they going to be housed? who's going to pay for their travel? what is their safety to come together, even if they could be socially distanced at the commencement itself? >> reporter: and you express some of the concerns that parents reportedly expressed to west point, andrea. they were caught off guard by this announcement by the president. we are told, and courtney kube's been doing some great reporting on all of this, that essentially, the president did not coordinate that announcement with west point, that, yes, he was scheduled to speak at the graduation, but that they weren't yet ready to announce it because all of those details were still being hashed out. so, we do know that there's going to be a scaled-back presence. we know that the quarters where they will stay will need to, of course, be cleaned before any of them return to campus. but president trump insisted that he is going to speak at the west point graduation. and of course, it comes on the heels of vice presid
