this sunday will be one year since 12 people were killed in the tragic shooting at the virginia beach municipal center. 12 precious lives lost were lost. and four forever altered by serious injuries. they were our mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, and children. pam and i and the commonwealth of virginia join with their loved ones in mourning their loss. we know that grieving is not an event but a process. and these families continue to live with their grief every day. we also join the virginia beach community which was forever changed by this tragic event. everyone felt this loss. from the co-workers to the first responders who ran toward danger and saved lives, to friends and neighbors. we are all proud of how the community has rallied to support the survivors and families in the immediate aftermath and in the year since then. we saw the compassion and kindness in people and we continue to see it today. while the current pandemic limits our ability to come together physically, it does not limit our ability to honor the memories of those that were lost. so today, please join me in ry

joining me now is virginia beach deputy city manager ron williams. thank you very much for being with us this morning. let's put up on the screen here what your plans are for the, what, 26 miles of beaches in virginia beach. you're going to have six feet apart unless they're family, no groups of 10 plus people, no speakers, in large coolers, no alcohol, no tents or groups of umbrellas, no group sports. what is your goal here as you reopen this weekend? >> good morning, john. we have the widest beaches on the east coast. and so the goal is that people can come and recreate on the beach by sitting. we have been in exercise and fishing only environment, per the executive orders that governor northam issued. now you can sit on the beach and what we want everyone to do is help stop the spread by making sure they're maintaining the executive orders for six feet apart and no more than nten in crowd. >> something as simple as sitting on a beach will be something that people haven't been able to do in some time. >> indeed. we also are going to have clean team

she's in virginia beach. if you're looking for a beach in the commonwealth for the holiday weekend that's open, this city is it. virginia beach the only way. ali, as you know, virginia reporting more than 1,200 cases thursday morning. it was the state's largest 24-hour jump in new cases. what are you hearing from business owners there? are they anxious at all, or are they just excited about a potential holiday weekend rush? >> reporter: craig, i think you hit the nail on the head when you talk about the balance. that's been the story here in virginia. virginia beach is the only beach that the governor is allowing to open for memorial day weekend. also, as i have been traveling the country, there's this continuous balance between public health and public safety, officials wanting to reopen the states in the safest way possible. you're also always balancing that with the economics. these local economic structures can sometimes be so faj ill. in talking to business owners here it's clear they can't keep going wit

out what this weekend could mean, joining me now is ron williams, the deputy city manager of virginia beach. thank you so much for being here. so the beaches are going to be opening. what can people visiting this weekend do and maybe more importantly what could people still not do? >> well, most importantly, kate, they could sit on the beach. we've had an exercise in fishing only environment and that is nice to be partially open but they could finally sit on the beach. the most important thing that we're asking and that the governor provision provides is that we need to require the physical distancing. his executive order still have a six foot requirement for individuals and no more than 10 people gathering in a group. and so thankfully everybody is going to be able to enjoy the widest beaches on the east coast here in virginia beach. >> and there are other restrictions on the sports and recreation that can be done on the beaches, right? >> that is right. there are certain portions of the beach, of the 28 miles, sports, no alcohol and an emphasis that discourages gathering and groups and th

a lot of our readers are wondering when will virginia beach and others be open for all kinds of use thisummer, if ever? governor northam: that is a great question. i am from the eastern shore, as you may know. we have beaches on both sides of the peninsula, obviously, virginia beach, hampton, norfolk have beautiful beaches. they are certainly important for our economy. we want people with the warm weather to be able to get back on the beaches, but we need to be it will to do it safely. so we are taking our time. we have a very comprehensive plan that we have worked with virginia beach and we will use that in other areas in virginia. looking at social distancing, looking at being able to educate individuals on why this is important, and also how we enforce that. so, as soon as you know that is in place and it is safe to move forward, then we will allow people to go back to the beaches. another point i would make, we are living in a new day. the times of going out onto the beach and being in large gatherings, we just can't do that anymore. as long as this virus is with us, again, we have g
