our oren lieberman joins us. hello to you, oren. >> reporter: natalie, this was a two-prong protest, not only about what they see as police brutality but it's also a protest, of course, fueled by the killing of george floyd. in fact, in the west bank city of bethlehem there is a huge mural of george floyd. that image of george floyd is there and it adds to that. it wasn't be just a protest of police brutality, it was a protest of israel's plans to annex parts of the west bank in a few weeks now. in that vein u.s. senator bernie sanders child in. he called on israelis, arabs to speak out about annexing the west bank. annexation if and when it happens would lead to view owelines and apartheid. there were some 2,000 protesters inside tel aviv in that square over the weekend, and that's what we'll see, the protests. they have an interesting quasi ally. the ideological right wing here is also against annexation. why? they see it as a partial annexation, one that would leave open the possibility of a future palestinian

cnn's oren lieberman is live for us in jerusalem.now the israeli army has been preparing along the west bank for some time. what can we expect to see today? >> that's a very good question. it's more on the potential verge. prime minister benjamin netanyahu has been incredibly quiet about what he intends to do as early as tomorrow. israel and specifically netanyahu could move forward with the annexation of parts of the west bank. there are very few others that know his plan and that includes, as crazy as this sounds, his defense minister and foreign minister who aren't necessarily on the same page as netanyahu when it comes to moving forward. there were meetings in the white house recently about what plans will be advanced and there was no consensus after three days of meetings. one member of the trump administration's peace team was here to see if there could be some consensus. there doesn't have to be. he can move forward alone. they'll dissolve the pa, palestinian authority, and put israel in charge of everything. the european unio

oren liebermann joins me now from jerusalem to talk about all of this. start with the opposition to the annexation, growing both there and internationally. >> certainly. and that was a big part of this, and you heard from u.s. senator bernie sanders who spoke via video message, saying that there must be opposition to israel's illegal plans to an ex-parts of the west bank. that was echoed by israeli and palestinian lawmakers who said an exation would lead to violence and apartheid. we saw that in what police estimate 2,000 protesters there. we certainly expect to see more protesters coming out. this group of protestors, primarily left wing it seems have a quasi ally in the right-wing opposed to annexation. why? a partial annexation of the west bank, they say, leaving open the possibility of a palestinian state. for that reason they're opposed to the annexation as laid out under the trump administration's plan to peace. an interesting group of friends here or allies working together against annexation. of course internationally we have seen opposition grow
