i'm delighted to say jenna martinez teaches first grade. angela skilling second grade. so much. it's a tough time, i know. first of all, jenna, let's start with you. tell me a little bit about kimberly, the type of teacher, more importantly the type of person. >> the type of person kim was was -- she was just a very faithful person, and she led her life based on her faith. she was very supportive. she was what i would call a giver, a giver of knowledge, a giver of kindness, a compassionate person, a strong person who stood by her values. she was bold when she needed to speak up, when there was an injustice or something to be heard, especially when it came to children. especially when it came to her students, or her colleagues. she was fun. she was adventurous. she was just a true loving person all the way around. >> yeah, and the story is just so incredibly sad. i mean, the loss of her and i know of course we're seeing this push for schools to reopen. the president even threatening to pull federal funding from states which don't do what he wants them to do. given your ow

so, joining me now, the teachers who shared that classroom with kimberly bird, her friends, jenna martineznd angela skillings. thank you, both. i appreciate it. and i'm so sorry that you are dealing with this, and i'm sorry about the death of your friend. okay? >> thank you. >> the three of you were the only people in the look, at the time, teaching for two hours at a time. you followed all the rules. so tell us about the precautions you took. >> okay. so -- >> we. >> go ahead, jenna. >> we had -- of course, we had the cdc guidelines. and we, also, had our school mandate to us what it was that we were having to do when we came back on campus. they were wanting us to come back on campus and teach summer school. so we followed everything that we were supposed to do. and we decided, because we were teaching, that we would work as a team and be in the same classroom. and we began working together in kimberly's -- in kimberly's room. but we had already designed how we were going to execute instruction. and how we were going to teach remotely, as far as taking turns, who was responsible. how we

joining us now, jenna martinez. one of those teachers who survived coronavirus and back with us she can tell us, first, how are you feeling? how is your health? >> getting stronger, feeling stronger today. i still have residual symptoms that i continue to battle. i understand it is probably going to take time for me to get back to feeling 100%. i'm doing the best i can and definitely a lot better than i was weeks ago. >> tell us about your work environment. you and kim were teaching together with another teacher in the same classroom. were you required to follow any of the social distancing or mask wearing protocols? >> most definitely. as you know, cdc guidelines were put out and we were meant to follow those, excuse me, we were meant -- we were meant to follow those, but more importantly our school went above and beyond and actually mandated them, mandated protocol to us. so we followed those protocols. we were not allowed on campus without a mask. we had to take our temperature. we had to wear our mask, wipe ever

jenna martinez taught side by side with two teachers this summer. all three got sick, but one teacher, kimberly chavez lopez bird, lost her life. >> she was 100% on board with whatever needed to be done. she had ordered face shields, masks. >> reporter: in neighboring california the teachers union in los angeles is demanding all schools stay closed. >> there is not enough time for the district to put together the detailed, rigorous plans that must be in place to physically re-open our site. >> the fuzzy part is going to go on your nose, okay? >> reporter: meanwhile in the northern part reachers at ucsf teaching kids how to do their own covid-19 tests at this summer camp in hopes schools could useimilar i the future. but the fear isn't just about schools. nearly 1800 covid cases breaking out in child care operations over a 75% increase in less than a month despite health risks, president trump is pushing hard on opening schools. >> this is one of the reasons that we're working to safely and responsibly re-open our country, re-open our schools, get ou
