. >> reporter: leeann melendez, "abc7 news." >> that's really eye opening, so much work just to keeps sanitized for all the kidding. a new survey shows the virus pandemic is pushing many california child care providers right to the brink of closure. the center for the study of child care employment interviewed 953 providers and found many of them are missing rent and mortgage payments, racking up credit card debt and risking their own health. the center surveyed private centers and programs that are run out of homing. now, coming up at 4:30, a conversation about how day cares and preschools can move forward and survive during this pandemic. it's part of our building a better bay area education week coming up at 4:30. >>> students were given a head start for the new school year with free backpacks, end colluding a shoe gift card and today's event was a drive through to encourage social distancing. >>> 500 people showed up for today's giveaway in east san jose. a community hit hard by covid-19. the event is run by the school of arts and culture and co-sponsored by the harvest food bank

leeann melendez, "abc7 news." >>> santa clara county is taking action to help ease the digital divide as students prepare to start the year online. today, supervisors announced $7 million in funding. the money will help at least 15,000 students. the move comes after the city of san jose announced a partnership with at&t to install 11,000 high-end hot spots within the city. >>> the college football season could be completely postponed as soon as tomorrow because of the coronavirus. this is a really complicated situation and involves the health and safety of players and billions, yes, billions of dollars. the bigtime programs like alabama, they make over $100 million a year on football. that money supports all the other sports at the school. so the ripple effects are major if games are not played this fall. alabama is a member of the southeast conference. the s.e.c. really wants to play for obvious reasons. the pac 12 and big 10 are leaning heavily towards not playing or pushing football to the spring. let's bring in chris alvarez on what is a rapidly changing story, including breaking
