the city of course was, little rock.ck was an unlikely place for a federal state showdown tied to segregation. there had already been some desegregation in the states and the governor was not considered a man devoted to segregation. but circumstances got out of control and central high school became the pivot in this federal-state struggle. i remember the night of september 24, 1957, when the first battle-dragged army troops arrived on this street. it was a scene income principle -- incomprehensible to the 50 or so townspeople looking on. one man turned to a companion and said, you won't get many people to full around with those -- fool around with those guys, which prompted one man to respond "yeah, but it's a hell a school." run it was the disorder of the day before that led president eisenhower to send in the troops of the 101st airborne. state and local police were unable that day before to control the mob, which reacted in bitter violence on learning nine negroes had entered the school as students. a couple of weeks

in little rock that was the issue. everybody was afraid their parent would take them out of school and do all this other and that. >> did you have any instinct that what might actually end up being the problem would emerge mainly that you're president with -- >> you know, i didn't think that side at all. i went and looked at the hotel that was segregated and i went down there by myself just to check it out. and when i came back when they started talking about we need to protest these places so i said i'm going to talk to some students. and when i talked to them i told them what my parents were like. but i also said if your parents were going to come up here and jump on you for doing it don't go, don't go. and then doctor -- her husband was a pripsple at a high school and he told me -- i went and met with him. he said i've got some young high school students in my school, townsend high school. the big high school there for most of the black. but this school with us kind of getting started. he said these kids what you ta
