we are going to see most of the bay area today except for the north bay. you're going to see the drifts of smoke coming in today. as we look at our high temperatures for this afternoon expect it to reach into the low 80s in the south bay, low 70s for oakland while we head over into the east bay. we're going to see temperatures in the upper 80s. we'll talk more about this and what's ahead coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> looks like i've lost my construction sign on my map. this is the south bay, the silicon valley. in the middle 280 at 87, downtown san jose, the connector ramp was supposed to be closed. still, it just cleared up from my map. the crew will be there for a while. the rest of the bay shows a smooth, easy drive and no problem. we won't have a back up at the bay bridge for a while. back to you. >>> a fast-moving brush fire in belmont that is threatening homes is under investigation this morning. firefighters got on the rooftop pouring water on flames as they advanced. san mateo consolidated fire said it called in outside hel

and the east bay.moderate air pleasanton, union city and for concord and walnut creek. looking at moderate air quality for oakland come about unhealthy air. you can see the red dots in san francisco indicating the unhealthy air through the north bay. larkspur as well as sausalito this morning. because of this unhealthy air, we have a spare the air alert to remain in effect today, extending into tomorrow, and likely beyond that. we are going a record 18 days in a row with the spare the air alert. the longest stretch of alerts in the bay area. the previous record, 14 days in a row in 2018 back in the camp fire. you can see down to the surface, it is the foggy start catching drizzle as well. the great start to the day for many spots, concord is starting off with clear skies at the 59 with the seven in oakland and livermore. 56 and seven cisco. upper 50s in san jose into the mid-50s for santa rosa. the strong ridge of high pressure in place with the heat building and the smoke trapped at the surface. as we

look at our air quality, still really bad for parts of the north bay, unhealthy for the rest of the bay area and even going into the week. it's still going to be very unhealthy and taking a look at our temperatures for the inland areas we're in the upper 90s today. unfortunately, not much of a cooldown anytime soon. at least we are feeling the changes during the early morning hours. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking now for the drive? >>> kari, we have to start off with a couple issues affecting your main commute and then we'll also, of course, talk about the fire zones. as we look at your map, mostly green around the bay. over to the altamont pass, west 580, a little accident there blocking part of your fast lane. one of the cars is perpendicular to traffic so tough to see the hazard lights. folks are slowing to get around it. that's tying up out of the altamont adding another 15 minutes at least if you're coming off the 205 merge. southbound 880 through oakland your typical construction zone so southbound it will start around 23rd. in the north bay we have the fire zone,

east bay hills. a red flag warning in effect until 8:00 a.m. today. we've seen gusts up to 40 to 50 miles per hour this morning. up in the higher elevations. really still watching the conditions up above 1,000 feet for the north bay mountains and east bay hills with that high fire danger. so we're gusty winds buthey will be easing heading through the day. thankfully so. then more of a typical september weather pattern going through the next several days. you can see on futurecast, the winds will be easing for today. daytime highs, little bill cooler compar but again that's all because of those smoky skies kind of that heat. so looking at upper 80s for san jose as well as for í2santa clara. low 90s in morgan hill. looking at 39 concord as well as for pleasant hill and around the bay upper 60s in san francisco and 77 in oakland and mid 80s for the north bay. here's the extended forecast and what you can expect. as we are looking at temperatures a little bit cooler over the next few days. but still deal

we have some low 80s for the south bay as well as much of the north bay.s has been a record fire season. i wanted to go over it because across the state we've had so many acres burn during this record season in 2020. fires have burned 3.6 million acres and if you do the equivalent 5,625 miles. and par we've seen an increase, it's climate change. our temperatures warming up and an increase of 2 degrees has caused more acres to burn and this includes last year. we had a record season just a couple years ago. we know that as we head into fall we get these diablo winds, hot weather and possibly an event this weekend. a high risk above normal fire season. for northern california this will decrease once the diablo winds go away. and with the hot weather coming this weekend that had be of concern starting on sunday and more on that. >>> things are looking pretty good. i have a spot of slowing and a concern. out to the tri-valley where it's eastbound 580. eastbound getting away from the dublin interchange at airway boulevard. i told you about that. and so they're

the heat wave all around the bay area. bob redell is tracking the possibility of power shutoffs to fire danger -- because of fire dangers. first, thom jensen in brentwood with a look at the fire danger sparking so much concern. good morning, thom. >> reporter: good morning. you can probably see the breeze hyped us with the palm trees blowing. that increases that fire danger, of course, cooling down the temperatures a little bit. we're down into the 70s right now at 5:00 a.m. we were already at 82 degrees but that fire danger and then the health concerns with the heat and the smoke. despite those health concerns from the national weather service and from health officials about the excessive heat we found lots of people out yesterday during the evening and during the daytime out shopping and enjoying dining. some of the hottest parts of the bay and the tri-valley area. shoppers finding labor day deals, not scared away by the heat even if they have to stand in line to get the bargains. >> some stores have lines, just keeping

you can see for tomorrow i'm rating it unhealthy from the north bay down to the south bay. so if it's too much for you to handle, you definitely may need to limit your outdoor exposure. my forecast for tomorrow morning, i've adjusted temperatures. they're in the upper 50s and low 60s. if you're up early, you have stuff to do, grocery shopping, you've got to get some stuff done before the kids do the schooling at home, take the light jacket if you're out early. 59 in the south bay. tri-valley at 62. also coming in with 57 in san francisco and that thick fog. the north bay at 56. as we move through tomorrow, temperatures stay pretty steady for us. that means down in the south bay you'll be at 86 in gilroy. right up to downtown san jose, 84. best weather right near the bay. go to oakland, 74. over to hayward, 79. it will be hotter, take note, back to antioch, 92. peninsula, we've got the haze from the smoke and 80 in palo alto. right up to san mateo, 75. san francisco, our typical drop-off in temperatures where 60s will be returning here from the outer sunset to the mission. a

burning in the north bay. at this hour the fire has burned more than 46,000 acres and it is essentially out of control. just 2% contained. at least 80 homes in napa and sonoma county are lost, not to mention the damaged property to wineries and hotels. more than 20,000 structures remain threatened. here is the latest for county evacuation orders. to the county line between diamond mountain road and petrified forest road. also the town of angwin and the area of poke valley. how far the fire has expanded in napa and sonoma county since it started on sunday. >>> in santa rosa eviction orders are already lifted for some homeowners in the fire zone. returning yesterday was gut wrenching. many had no idea if their homes had been saved or not. we spoke to one relieved neighbor in the skyhawk neighborhood. >> five or six homes burnt on the corner. i was 300 feet from my house burning. >> some people now living in skyhawk are all too familiar with this. some of them moved after losing their homes in the firestorm that

the bay area this morning. culprit causing our bad air. tens of thousands of people are forced to evacuate. hundreds of those buildings destroyed. the bear fire early wednesday east of oroville and 100,000 acres in 24 hours. in butte county, this is the same area hit by the camp fire two years ago. about 20,000 people there are evacuated. one family tried to escape their berry creek home on tuesday night and had to shelter in a swamp. >> i have no idea how to describe that. we were trapped like eight, nine hours. this bridge was on fire. we couldn't get out. >> meanwhile, the creek fire east of fresno was still out of control. the national guard telling us that they rescued 385 people by helicopter. >>> well, remarkable the work i national guard helicopter flying over fresno county to that creek fire. for days, crews have been working to rescue all those people, as you mentioned, marcus. trapped by the flames. on twitter the guard said visibility was very low and very tough work for them due to all the smoke ou
