look at our air quality, still really bad for parts of the north bay, unhealthy for the rest of the bay area and even going into the week. it's still going to be very unhealthy and taking a look at our temperatures for the inland areas we're in the upper 90s today. unfortunately, not much of a cooldown anytime soon. at least we are feeling the changes during the early morning hours. as we head over to you, mike, how is it looking now for the drive? >>> kari, we have to start off with a couple issues affecting your main commute and then we'll also, of course, talk about the fire zones. as we look at your map, mostly green around the bay. over to the altamont pass, west 580, a little accident there blocking part of your fast lane. one of the cars is perpendicular to traffic so tough to see the hazard lights. folks are slowing to get around it. that's tying up out of the altamont adding another 15 minutes at least if you're coming off the 205 merge. southbound 880 through oakland your typical construction zone so southbound it will start around 23rd. in the north bay we have the fire zone,

by the span i mean the bay bridge. we're looking at berkeley and berkeley curve and westbound 80 jammed up here and that's the tough part. look at your map. starting to improve for the speeds through mercury and emeryville and early problems on the span of the bay bridge caused big backups at treasure island and now back to the toll plaza and the berkeley curve and the rest of the approach through contra costa county looks great with typical slow spots like castro valley and vallejo, back to you. >> thanks, mike. that is what is happening on the ground. what is happening in the air? the smoke from so many fires making for ominous skies across the bay area. we have live team coverage for you. burning in the north bay. at this hour the fire has burned more than 46,000 acres and it is essentially out of control. just 2% contained. at least 80 homes in napa and sonoma county are lost, not to mention the damaged property to wineries and hotels. more than 20,000 structures remain threatened. here is the latest for county evacuation orders. to the county line between diamond mountain road and petrified forest road. also the town of angwin and the area of poke valley. how far the fire has expanded in napa and sonoma county since it started on sunday. >>> in santa rosa eviction orders are already lifted for some homeowners in the fire zone. returning yesterday was gut wrenching. many had no idea if their homes had been saved or not. we spoke to one relieved neighbor in the skyhawk neighborhood. >> five or six homes burnt on the corner. i was 300 feet from my house burning. >> some people now living in skyhawk are all too familiar with this. some of them moved after losing their homes in the firestorm that w

that are plaguing the bay area. but we also have the smoke from fires in oregon and washington is johnson illustrating all morning long. the way the winds are that smoke has been pulled out to the ocean and then brought down the california coast and then this morning with the marine layer that pushes in it's bringing all of their smoke into the bay area as well so we're getting a double shot of smoke today and the fires have turn even deadlier now at least 10 people are dead. >>and several injured in missing in butte county that fire. the bear fire is now being called the north complex west zone. fire and we already knew that 3 people had died in the flames now yesterday crews found 7 more bodies bringing the total so far to 10. but there are still a dozen other people missing and you can see how many homes were burned down in this fire that has already destroyed 2000. houses and other buildings and the creek fire in fresno county that's at least 6% contained which is the first progress reported since it started on f

we have some low 80s for the south bay as well as much of the north bay. has been a record fire season. i wanted to go over it because across the state we've had so many acres burn during this record season in 2020. fires have burned 3.6 million acres and if you do the equivalent 5,625 miles. and par we've seen an increase, it's climate change. our temperatures warming up and an increase of 2 degrees has caused more acres to burn and this includes last year. we had a record season just a couple years ago. we know that as we head into fall we get these diablo winds, hot weather and possibly an event this weekend. a high risk above normal fire season. for northern california this will decrease once the diablo winds go away. and with the hot weather coming this weekend that had be of concern starting on sunday and more on that. >>> things are looking pretty good. i have a spot of slowing and a concern. out to the tri-valley where it's eastbound 580. eastbound getting away from the dublin interchange at airway boulevard. i told you about that. and so they're g

so are you in the east bay. now you'll be. rely making it to the 80's for our most inland cities with the vast majority of us only in those 60's and 70's so no mats 76 today with neish at 77 santa rosa through sandra fell in the low 70's today, and tomorrow won't be much different we're going to hold on to smoky conditions more so the knot, so don't expect a lot of sunshine to be breaking its way through these next couple of days. temperatures will be kept cool into next week even we're not looking at any heat waves ahead of us what we will see is gradual gradual improvement as far as air quality is concerned later in the forecast you get likely the more sunshine you'll get signing between those smoky skies. that's your forecast robin is standing by with a look at traffic. hey there hey there john traffic's not so bad right now crossing bay area bridges, we're looking at actually decreasing numbers here from the east bay over to the peninsula. so let's start off the look at 92 the trip across the san mateo bridge you see how it

also the east bay and the south bay modern along the coastline probably improving again toward the afternoon with that sea breeze picking up but here we go we have the trouble we had that offshore wind we're worried about fire danger in the bay area. the offshore wind ironically didn't bring us the fires but brought of smoke from other fires in northern california, the bear fire. the august complex to the north that moving down into the bay area but now things begin to switch gears started to see more sterl as high pressure begins to build up out of the south and that will be the trend coming our way so the sea breeze is blowing right now and that is some good news. we like to get that air off the ocean that gives us have a nice fresh air westerly wind to 14 miles per hour in a san francisco, 13 in the valley 15 into fairfield calm though in parts of the northeast not see much mixing there and that's somewhat of a concern 70 degrees in livermore 70 in dublin right now the smoke team is so thick today in knocked down the forecast and temperatures by a good 20 degrees. by what was be

the heat wave all around the bay area. bob redell is tracking the possibility of power shutoffs to fire danger -- because of fire dangers. first, thom jensen in brentwood with a look at the fire danger sparking so much concern. good morning, thom. >> reporter: good morning. you can probably see the breeze hyped us with the palm trees blowing. that increases that fire danger, of course, cooling down the temperatures a little bit. we're down into the 70s right now at 5:00 a.m. we were already at 82 degrees but that fire danger and then the health concerns with the heat and the smoke. despite those health concerns from the national weather service and from health officials about the excessive heat we found lots of people out yesterday during the evening and during the daytime out shopping and enjoying dining. some of the hottest parts of the bay and the tri-valley area. shoppers finding labor day deals, not scared away by the heat even if they have to stand in line to get the bargains. >> some stores have lines, just keeping s

e in the bay area. such a run here. smoke and ash throughout the area that we all see when we walk out the door. kari has a look at our forecast right now, certainly this is tough. we have another spare the air day. >>> yeah, and so we'll see if this will get extended. most likely it will though we'll see improvements in our weather conditions. we have so many fires burning all around us. as we take a look outside in san francisco a little bit of fog to start out this morning, and that's going to help us cool off just a bit especially along the coastal areas and let's go throughout the day looking hour by hour at our temperatures where we are going to see about the noon hours. for the south bay we're at 81 degrees. as we go into today we'll see those highs still reaching into the 90s but this is definitely better, highs over 100 degrees. we're up to about 90 degrees at 3:00 in antioch and 94 around concord and then going into this evening if you're planning to head out and will be doing outdoor activities, 70s and droppi

nice temperatures reaching into the mid-70s for the south bay peninsula over to the east bay. or napa today for a high testimony, this will be the coolest day of the week as we look at a storm system approaching from the north that will bring in showers across far northern california. we are just going to see an increase in cloud cover for the next couple of days but we'll also see as that system moves out the smoke may possibly return once again. let's get a look at our wind speed and wind direction forecast that makes aiz to the bay area. with a westerly wind and some of those higher gusts helping to clear out the air. tomorrow those winds will shift in from the north and that's going to bring that smoke back. if you have breathing problems it's going to be another weekend you should probably limit your time outside across all of our microclimates and our temperatures will be slightly warmer tomorrow. definitely a spike in temperatures on sunday. at least those hot temperatures won't stay too long. we'll cool down early next week. mike, how is it looking for the morning commu

bob redell, "today in the bay." another spare the air alert. >>> we've seen a lot of smoke coming in and it's coming from those fires just to the north of us. traveling from north to south you see that big snowstorm in parts of colorado, this is part of the same system that's producing strong winds here in the bay area. another fire to the north pushing some smoke in so that's the reason why we have those orange skies. looking just southeast of oroville, how ominous this looks. it's bright orange and they have these huge billows of smoke clouds coming through across those areas and you know this air is so toxic right now. it's really not safe to breathe in and that's what we're seeing this morning as we cannot see the sunrise just yet. our air quality will remain unhealthy throughout today. these clouds go really high in the atmosphere and this is all of the fire and the smoke that goes beyond what we see here. they can travel hundreds of mills away. that's the reason we do have ash falling this morning and it can go

air still for portions of the north bay into san francisco and parts of the east bay over richmond, looking at that unhealthy air quality. let's zoom in code for the peninsula and what you can expect and it is looking pretty good. we are looking at moderate air quality for parts of the peninsula as well as down through the south bay this morning, and also looking at moderate air quality as we look to the tri-valley and the east bay as well. the air quality is not popping up but looking at the moderate air quality for portions of the east bay and right around the oakland area analy can ex. we strong ridge of high pressure and the smoke is trapped and the heat is building for us. we are showing you the heat advisory in effect for the coast along for around the bay and that is in effect saturday through labor day. extreme heat warnings are in effect, highlighted in pink and it is for the rest of the bay area. here is what you can expect for labor day. we will see temperatures in the triple digits in length and 80s around the bay and 70s for coast. we are low 80s in san jose and across t

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live there at the scene. kris, have you gotten any information from police about what led up to all of this? >> reporter: police aren't saying a lot about the investigation but we've seen them looking around for evidence with flashlights. just to tell you where we are, south eighth and reed street not too far from san jose state. we are right next door to one of the fraternity houses near campus. this was the scene around 10:00 when officers arrived in this neighborhood. they found five people shot, two of them died here at the scene, the three others are at an area in the hospitals. people were gathered around some sort of street side memorial. a neighbor tells us there was another shooting in the area shortly before this one. >> this is not the type of community we want to live in. this is not the example we want to set for our kids. and, i mean, what can we really do about it? deal with it. >> reporter: sfpd has not confirmed the earlier shooting the one witness mentioned. they have not also said whether t

as well as the east bay as we're getting this thursday started. as we head outside in the south bay, we'll see a few clouds early. willow glen will see temperatures in the mid 60s and then the clouds clearing out for a really nice, comfortable day as we will make it into the upper 70s here. we'll get a look at all our microclimates coming up and talk about the weekend heat and the fire danger in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for that commute? >> well, kari, not even getting into the 40z rigs right here. map will show you i put a grid out there showing it's westbound 580. just before you get to greenville a big rig blocking the slow lane and a lot of activity expected in the next few minutes and not a tow truck, another rig. they'll have to switch out the rigs to pull the trailer out of the area and another lane blocked and that will be a problem holding folks up out of the altamont pass. bottom of your screen northbound 680. they did the restriping which made the northbound drive more pleasant and that's it, guys. back to you. >>> well, co

>>and now has officially sunk into the bay itself. plus some wildfire smoke that's making its way in from the coast. this morning, san francisco can't see much it is another gray morning yet another day without much sunshine. air quality as you mentioned the worst it can be the worst we've seen it in this 25 consecutive days of spare the air alerts so we've been saying how unhealthy areas. today is the worst of that so even though you may have cut you still less than ideal conditions today is not one to stepping outside and doing much, especially avoid those workouts i know we've still been getting out there for jogs today, it is a rest day it needs to be if you care about your lungs and your health because this air quality is so bad. now why are we seeing so much poor air moving in from the pacific. look at oregon. this was on wednesday right here. any sort of wildfire smoke was sent out into the pacific. it's been sinking gradually the past couple of days. and now with our light on shore flow pushing fog into the bay. it's also pushi

area especially for the north bay and the east bay. as we look at our air quality there is an air quality advisory for the north bay and east bay but not a spare the air alert. we may see that coming back this weekend as we see the smoke coming back in once again and, of course, barring no new wildfires. we will have moderate air quality. as we look at what we're expecting, that fire danger for many of our hills from the east bay but the highest risk will be for parts of the north bay where those temperatures will be hotter and those winds will be higher. so as we go through the forecast looking at our inland areas still some 80s today, but then 90s tomorrow and then we're in the triple digits for an extended period of time from sunday into early next week. we've been watching this, mike. how is it looking for the morning commute? >>> it's looking better than those temps as far as i'm concerned. i don't care for the hot. you know that. i don't care for the problems for drivers. let's look at the maps. it's that good news/bad news situa

right up in along the north bay. winds are calm this morning for most areas but will pick up especially for the north bay this afternoon as cooler air begins to push on into the region will definitely notice a breezy finished year thursday. today's daytime highs a little cooler than they have been 60's and 70's at the coast. it was a warm day at the coast yesterday with your 70's today won't be quite as warm with 60's and 70's right alongside the bayshore to palo alto at 76 today south bay temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's. san jose at 79 degrees east bay temperatures not much different. we will be one to 2 degrees cooler than yesterday. just enough to be getting out there and enjoying even a little bit more than you have been north bay temperatures some of our warmest but also no 90's in the 4 zone forecast here getting close in areas like vacaville, while 60's expected in coastal marine and sonoma counties. tomorrow and saturday will be our coolest days of this forecast as that cold front advances pushes on

here in the bay area, the lnu complex fires in the north bay are now 96% contained. so they're making certainly some progress on that front the scu complex fires in the east and south bays now 98% contained. the czu complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties now 89% contained and then lastly the woodward fire up in the north bay at the point reyes national seashore is now 95% contained this morning. >>the creek fire tripled in size in less than a week, it's burned 200,000 acres so far and it's just 10% contained, let's look at the map that shows you where the fire is now the dark green is the initial fire and then the light green is where it spread for the first 2 days, the yellow and the light orange portions that's what happened on days 3, 4, and then the orange represents last thursday and friday more than 14,000. structures are threatened by this fire and low visibility means little opportunity for water or fire retardant drops. >>where that the smoke has been. >>lane in staying in the area and with aircraft it has not been able to go up. >>more than 400 h
