. >> hello, i am tom brokaw and it is my privilege to participate in this commemoration of vj-day. the end of the greatest for the history of mankind. i was just -- but i was living at an army base at the time and the extraordinary celebration that erupted across that base in the small towns of southwestern south dakota. i knew this was an event that will define my love time and lifetime of everyone who comes after. so we need to be reminded again about what happens when america works together for common cause because we are going through another kind of war right now and we need to prevail because this is an on scene for it. but nonetheless, it is a war that depends on all of us pulling together and finding that great american spirit that has gone through was, gotten us to so many, many challenges in the past. i am confident we can do it again and if we remember, the elation of vj-day and the triumph of the western nations against the greatest war in the history of mankind, the greatest enemies, we could do it again. >> on behalf of the 2.3 million soldiers, sailors, airman, marin

we put out the book before it was issued and a good friend of saw -- a brokaw, tom very small space. the iphone cut off the last two letters of the book, so tom -- [laughter] amb. lord: you see what is coming, right? tom brokaw went out and bought 10 copies of the book thinking he was getting " kissinger on kissing." . >>> now let's turn to tom brokaw who has covered his fair share of presidential elections. er the years he's developed some key words to live by. here is tom. >> i've been covering presidential elections since 1968. and i have an enduring motto to help guide me. i call it the ufo, the unforeseen will occur. no greater example than four years ago when hillary clinton took an early nap thinking she would awake as the president of the united states. in a presidential election year two months, which is what we have left now, can be three lifetimes. especially in an age of 20/7 communication. where everyone has access to an opinion or a point of view. this is the most divided i have seen this country since vietnam. and now we have a historically devastating pandemic and no end yet in sight. more ufos. what are the russians going to be up to, the chinese will likely try to interfere. president trump promises a scorched earth campaign. democrats will have to keep the many parts of their party on the same track and under control. mail-in ballots, how long will it take to count them?

in terms of presidential leadership, at least with president clinton, my sense was we had what tom brokaw used to call u.f.o., unforeseen occurrence. some people would kind of zoom in, totally unexpected. i think president clinton was, first of all,, he would grasp that this was a serious issue, if not a potential or maybe immediate crisis, something that had to be dealt with. at the same time, he wanted to get the facts quickly and mobilize a plan to deal with that. and he had a good ability to keep a broader perform, to keep the broader agenda moving, because of each of the other very distinguished, accomplished families today know that's the essence of any white house. you've got to keep the broad agenda moving forward while dealing with these issues. but i would say those are the real qualities that president clinton had in times of a major event or major crisis. >> andy, how about from your perspective? ndy, i think you're on mute. >> the president has to be to be an optimist, not a pessimist, and has to have the courage to make decisions. if they're a pessimist and they get up and m
