i have just written a book about john robert lewis from troy alabama who is willing to die for a christian and highly idealized version and a vision of american life. john lewis believed contra the were the iron just in realist the history believe to bring the kingdom of god to. here is a man born 1940 who repeatedly in the american sout south, 50 and 60 years ago acted in the tradition essentially an early christian saint willing to die for an idea and was at peace with that. he bore witness to a vision of reality if we are all feeling pious and proper we might agree to intellectually but he loved it and that story is remarkable not the least because if you look at john lewis when he was learning how to overcome a stutter by preaching to his chickens in the 19 forties you would've thought a young man with his colleagues that would bear witness to shift to the trajectory of the mightiest nation since rome and he did it. he did in an incredibly biblical way which is not popular or convenient to say perhaps, but if you ask him, that is what he was doing. he was on the bridge in selma because
