clay: yes. essentially all of the general construction in our museum -- we went in and had contractors literally rip out everything in the museum and start from scratch. that included installing all new walls in the exhibit areas. we constructed a 3500 square foot addition to the building. that work is all essentially done now. the exhibit fabricators are installing the exhibit panels, the graphics and that kind of thing. we have not really started installing the artifacts in the exhibit. that will be the last thing. that won't happen for another month or so. herman: that sounds like an exciting moment in the project. there are a lot of things i want to discuss about your new exhibit and the process of remaking a permanent exhibition. i thought we could start by talking first about our two museums and what they were like when they were created in the 1940's and 1950's. museums are not static. they naturally change over time, as audiences and technology changes. when fdr created the national arch

the sculptor makes a clay model and the clay model is covered in kind of a wax. and then the wax is cut into pieces off the clay model and a hard plaster is put around the wax model to keep it from moving, to stabilize it. and then that goes off to the foundry and the foundry takes that wax impression of the statues and creates another wax impression using a very, very hard black wax. that black wax is then encased in another form of slurry, like a ceramic slurry, both inside and outside. that goes into an oven and the temperature is turned up and the wax melts out. and into that space the hot bronze is poured. and that's where the statues then absolutely resemble the first wax impression that was made. and it's done in pieces, various pieces, not all at once. and then they're reassembled. these were all shipped here. took about a month at sea in a container. and then they're installed with rods that are about 18 inches long that are embedded into the stone and concrete base. so now we'll walk over here and see the presidential side. people often think that the '

what was clay? >> clay hunt was one of my best friends. he was my sniper partner.wedding. good guy. he came home and was struggling with the war. he was diagnosed with post traumatic stress. he ended up taking his own life in 2011, about two years after he got out of the marine corps. when i think about clay taking his own life i was -- it was driven by lack of purpose. he was searching for meaning. >> vast numbers of vets are homeless, many see mental health issues as a weakness. clay says perhaps the biggest problem is indifference. >> we send these men and women off to fight, we have a responsibility when they come home to understand what they went through. people often hesitate to ask veterans to share though stories because they're afraid of what they might hear. they're afraid it might make them uncomfortable. too bad. that person had to live it. they had to do it. the least you can do is hear it and help them feel a little less guilty about what they maybe had to do. >> listen and appreciate. both from jake woods' perspective, there is hope, lots of hope. >>
