grady trimble with the story now live from chicago. grady.ll, americans spent 23 1/2 billion dollars online from thursday till sunday. despite the fact we're supposed to be back to work, by all projections we're going to keep spending. here is what adobe says we'll spend today, 10.8 and $12.7 billion. that is just online. that would make today the biggest online spending day ever and would be between 15 and 35% more than we spent on cyber moaned last year which is the current record holder. of course the pandemic is a huge reason for the surge in online sales this year. black friday foot traffic at stores down 52% year-over-year. that is according to sensor mat tick solutions. some way that is by design. some big box retailers had fewer door busters and moved sales online and spread them out over the entire month of november which of course heated up the competition with amazon and amazon really rose to the occasion this year, increasing its share of online sales on thanksgiving and black friday to 55% that was followed by walmart, best buy,

prices and also driving up rents which is something of a new wrinkle we hear about today from grady trimble>> reporter: hey, connell. yeah, we know the pandemic has expedited a lot of trends, and certainly moving to the such you shoulds -- suburbs has been one of them. a lot of times we talk about it in the context of home sales, and it's true there is a lot of demand for people looking to buy homes in the suburbs right now. prices are up about 12-15% year-over-year because so many people looking at suburban homes. but also rent prices on the rise. we reached out to innovation homes and american homes for rent, and both of them tell us, well, home rental demand is through the roof right now. innovation homes said they were going to try to get us inside a home to show you one of them, but they're all occupied right now. and they actually recently did a survey, and what they found among their tenants is that the ones who are moving from apartments and town homes, they wanted more space. about a third of the people said they wanted more space, which is something we hear a lot. even more, 37% s

let's head out to naperville, illinois, where we find grady trimble. reporter: liz, this is one of those businesses that is worried about the possibility of a second stay-at-home order and that is certainly an idea that the governor of illinois has floated in the past few days. we are outside of chicago right now but in chicago, the mayor just announced that starting monday, she will be starting a new stay-at-home advisory that will be in effect from monday until the next 30 days. here are some of the things that the mayor is suggesting. stay home except for essential outings. stop having guests over, even family. avoid non-essential travel and cancel your traditional thanksgiving plans. it's unclear if that advisory has any teeth but it will certainly keep a lot of people home and unfortunately, out of businesses like this one. and this comes as coronavirus cases across the midwest are on the rise and that's why a lot of states in the midwest have instituted heightened coronavirus restrictions. some have put stay-at-home recommendations in place. and

grady trimble is at a walmart in chicago to take a look at how big box retailers are taking on amazon trying to morph to a very difficult landscape here. reporter: yeah, those big box stores like walmart are trying to give amazon a run for its money, but this weekend, amazon rose to the occasion and to the competition. take a look at these numbers from thanksgiving and black friday. amazon had 55% share of online sales compared to these other retailers. that's up for amazon about 4% year over year. amazon was followed by walmart, best buy, target and then ebay. you mentioned this, foot traffic in retail locations was way down this year, about 52%. look at this video we have. it looks like any other day at the store, not on a black friday. but that was partly by design. the stores didn't want big crowds this year. so instead, they tried to push people online for the entire month of november, not just on black friday. that seemed to work out best for target. sales online for the month of november in the run-up to thanksgiving and black friday, up about 305% which might explain this next

grady trimble is in philadelphia. grady, i know they're still counting.ly expand? reporter: potentially. right now he's up by just about 5,000 votes, a very small margin. they are still counting in the pennsylvania convention center here in philadelphia, those mail-in ballots. they are also counting mail-in ballots in pittsburgh and other parts of the state. we know that 75% or so of those mail-in ballots have gone to biden, so you can do the math, with about 163,000 mail-in ballots left to count, according to the last update from the secretary of state around midnight last night. and we showed you yesterday, the protests in this area. there were the anti-trump count every vote protesters and the pro-trump protesters on the other side of the street. tensions boiled over last night. i want to show you if we can go live to this hummer right behind me here. philadelphia police reportedly thwarted a potential attack on the convention center where those mail-in ballots are being counted. police took two armed men into custody nearby. they say the men drove int

grady trimble in chicago on how that's all sorting out. hey, grady.s sort of a bust by design. retailers were really pushing people to shop online, and they did, in large numbers. it was the second biggest day for online shopping ever, behind only cyber monday from last year. this year, on cyber monday, expected to top that. americans are expected to spend between $10.8 billion and $12.7 billion today. that's up between 15% and 35% compared to last year. foot traffic, of course, has been way down at retail locations, including this walmart, down about 52% compared to black friday last year. but like i said, that was by design. the retailers started the sales early and they really encouraged people to go shop the online doorbusters this time around. target, as an example, in the month running up to black friday, and this week, this past weekend, their sales were up 305%, according to edison trends, but amazon, as you might expect, still had the market share of about 55% for online sales over this past weekend on thanksgiving and black friday. but peopl

grady trimble on all of that.ts out there are helping your kids with homework but you assume probably it's the teacher grading the homework. not always. kurt knuttson, the cyberguy, on all of that. what's going on here? >> it's the technology used all around the country right now, especially for parents with kids at home learning where the schools are closed. teachers have been given great tools, this ability to use auto grading and to manage their lessons online. that's been a blessing. what we are finding out is that parents are also opening up report cards come this fall and they see their child's grade scores are lower than what they are used to. why? apparently some glitches are going on with this auto grading software out there and some systems are not necessarily to blame, but mainly it's the teacher. look at this example. for example, if you answered this vascular plants but didn't do the capitalization right, it will mark it wrong and down goes your test grade score. another example being used is a questi

grady trimble live at chicago's midway airport.t is the largest operator of 737 max planes but they don't plan to have the planes back in the air until spring of next year. united airlines is shooting for the first three months of 2021. american airlines, their target date is december 29th to start a flight on the 737 max between laguardia and miami round-trip once a day. this requires some changes before these planes can return to commercial service. namely their software updates to the flight control system which have been partially to blame for the two crashes as well as other fixes. pilots will have to be retrained as well. boeing waited 20 months for this day. along the way they have lost billions of dollars. now though the company says it is safe and federal regulators are assuring the public the same thing, that this plane is safe. >> based on all the activities that we've undertaken during the past 20 months, my experience al experience flying the -- personal experience flying the aircraft, i can tell you now i'm 100% comfo

grady trimble is there as the stay-at-home order looms over the windy city. what does it look and feel like? reporter: we are about as close to another stay-at-home order, lockdown, as you could possibly be without calling it that. starting tomorrow, new restrictions go in place here. we are at the iconic field museum. this museum and all other museums in illinois will have to close tomorrow. so will casinos and movie theaters. retail stores on michigan avenue, they should be gearing up for the busy holiday season. that's not happening. they are going to have to cut back to 25% capacity, as will gyms and salons. bars and restaurants haven't had indoor dining for several weeks now. they are allowed to serve outdoors but as you might imagine, this time of year in the windy city, that is not exactly ideal. similar restrictions in place in michigan and minnesota as well. some states are trying to go forward with less restrictive measures, instead of locking things down, shutting down indoor dining, they are looking to do curfews. as an example, ohio is having a s

grady trimble on that from the fox business network live in chicago this morning. n businesses are looking to move to more tax-friendly states. tell us about it. >> the nasdaq and other stock exchanges looking at a move to texas. under a biden plan corporate taxes would go up from the 21% to 28%. for the highest earning individuals payroll, income and capital gains taxes would all go up. so in the highest tax states we're looking at the top tax rates climbing to nearly 55%, even over 60% in some cases. one financial planner told fox business tax rates are going to go up so you better be looking for an alternative if you have the flexibility. millions of americans increasingly do have that flexibility. a recent survey from upwork found up to 23 million americans are planning to move thanks to the ability to work remotely. about a fifth of those are based in big cities. some cities are facing huge budget deficits. they're increasing taxes locally coming up in the future and federal taxes could go up as well. this could expedite the big city exodus. >> sandra: importan

grady trimble is right there. stores, weren't they just subject to looting? reporter: they were two times this year, stuart and they are still boarded up right now. but that is actually why some officials in the city want to add this tax. here is how it would work. less than .05% just for businesses on the magnificent mile. it would be an additional property tax would generate somewhere between 700 and $800,000 a year. they would use that money to hire private security, to add extra lighting and for beautification projects to try to redeem the reputation that has been tarnished by looting that happened here this year. of course there are opponents to this additional tax. these businesses already pay some of the highest taxes in the city and they're already strapped for cash with the decline in retail that we've seen lately, the tourism decline in this city. they say it would be more difficult for businesses already considering getting out of this area, stu. stuart: we hear it. grady trimble, right in the middle of

let's get a read on things from grady trimble in philadelphia. hey, grady.orter: neil, while the trump campaign could file a lawsuit against the people here in philadelphia as well as in allegheny county which is in the pittsburgh area, they could do that as early as today. you mentioned the count is still happening at this hour. it resumed 9:00 this morning. this count and access poll workers got to watch the count happen is expected to be part of the trump campaign's challenge in this lawsuit. in a press conference over the weekend they outlined some of the other things that they're going to be challenging. a couple of them in allegheny county. the first is that they claim that republican observers were barred from watching the count for a full 24 hour period. the other claim they make, a deceased woman voted by mail. they indicated they may have other examples of that as well. maria bartiromo talked to rudy giuliani over the weekend. she asked him if this lawsuit would actually have an impact on the outcome of this race. listen? >> well i think we have en
