. ♪ >>> good morning and happy friday i'm dominic chu in for brian l sullivan futures are pointing toome mixed pictures slightly lower open imt applied for the dow jones, just about 17 to the down side, pretty much flat for the s&p and just 7 point decline for the overall nasdaq if these future moves hold this comes after the dow, s&p, the nasdaq and russell 2000 all posted record closes in yesterday's trading session. you can see this year to date, still the nasdaq leading the way hire higher up by 42% and nasdaq is on pace for its best wakingly gain since the beginning of november. it has been almost a straight line higher since the pandemic lows and on the treasury yield side of things, a little bit of movement here. higher slightly, about 94 basis points for the ten year. 12.3 basis points or 0.123% for the two year note yield and 30 year long bond, right at 1.69% there. let's go worldwide the bank of japan announcing that it will stick to its current policy framework which includes negative interest rates. most of the major averages in asia closing a bit lower, and in europe, foc

i'm dominic chu from cnbc headquarters.rsey right now but wall street is set to open flat to slightly higher this morning. stocks closing well off the lows of the session yesterday with the dow erasing a more than 400-point loss. investors weighing some concerns about a new coronavirus strain in the united kingdom against that big deal struck by congress this weekend on a massive $900 billion covid relief package. they were also keeping track of tesla's debut, speaking of the east bay, and the s&p 500. that stock, which was added to the index yesterday fell more than 6% from the record high that it hit back on friday. now in focus today we've got reports on home sales, also consumer confidence, and third quarter economic growth in gdp. >>> well, united airlines is preparing to recall thousands of furloughed employees as the industry will receive $15 billion in payroll support as part of that big new economic stimulus package, but there's a big caveat . in a memo they expect the recall to be temporary as travel remains low.

dominic chu is this morning with what should we know, tno snow?now >> all 69 yof the utilities pla vital role but they are becoming a less part of the stock market. it is only one of four sectors in negative territory so far in 2020 but it is only the fourth biggest sector out there, so does it even matter. here are some of the numbers behind it. the technology sector that we focus so much on and rightfully so is now 28% of the overall s&p 500. the second biggest sector out there is health care 14%. so tech already twice as big as health care. and utilities a little less than 3% just to put it in perspective. let put some dollar numbers behind that. take a look at this, the technology sector's market value within the s&p is roughly $8.5 trillion meanwhile, you take a look at utilities, and the overall combined market weight is about $851 billion so yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, technology sector roughly ten times the market value size of what is going on here and to put it even more in perspective, one technology company in particular, not

definitely something to think about, dominic chu, back at cnbc hq it's the old -- if it seems too good> if your stock loses 2/3 of its value, and your yield goes to 8 or 9%, maybe it's not as sustainable, joe, right, as some other dividends out there. in light of the moves we have seen for companies trying to preserve capital or preserve their dividend we wanted to take a look at the s&p 500 and look at the stocks that have higher than average dividend yields. in this case, we put it higher than that. dividend yields of 3% or more in the s&p 500, and so that we have an ability to kind of marry out some of that dividend yield with positive price return. we looked at both six month and one year price appreciations they had to be positive. we have 20 stocks that have passed that particular screen. three of them are names that you kind of know pretty well one of them is 3 m that blue chip stock year to date is down 2 1/2%. over the last year, it's still positive and over the last six months, it's still positive. it actually carries a 3.4% dividend yield right now that's possibly one of tho

dominic chu found some of the winners and joins us with more good morning dom. >> it hasn't been nearlytor as energy and some fltof the other beatenp sectors. it's one of four sectors in the negative territory down 5%, versus the overall s&p up 15% take a look at the movements within the industry overall in the sector because there have been winners and losers. if you take a look at some of the real losers this year, driving some of the under performance. ppl, down 20%. con edison down 22%, and centerpoint energy down 22%, driving down the sector. probably the most important stock in the overall sector is helping things the most, and that is take a look at this one here, next air energy, 22% it is by far the biggest stock in the utility sector, a market cap of $145 billion. the total market cap is 850. it represents roughly 17% of overall index. you have american water of 21%, aes up 13, and xcel energy up 3. it has been rough for the overall sector, but some of the biggest and most important stocks are keeping things afloat, and by the way, the next era energy by virtue of the huge ups
