as matt knows well, when congress created the world war i centennial commission, you know, the commission is a federal agency, given emissions by the congress and given no money to execute that mission. so, we had to start out raising our own money, likewise the memorial has been funded primarily by private funds. in the way of washington, all these memorials, some federal money winds of making its way into it one way or another. the bulk of it has been private funding, i think. that was the fourth challenge. if i had known all that 12 years ago, i don't know if i would've taken this project on. but we took it one step at a time and, a lot of people put their time and energy into it and it paid off. >> then, in 12 years, i think that is really quite fantastic, isn't it? that it is being accomplished within a comparatively short period when you look at other memorials in d.c.. you know, it is many more years. >> this particular project is shorter than that. 12 years ago, we were talking about, you mentioned the local district of columbia war morial that is on the mall. back in 2000 and a,

world war i centennial commission is in the process of raising the funds to revamp the park and build a large 60 foot wide bronze sculpture. it is beautiful. i will show you in a second and mock showing the soldier's story of going to war. they hope to get this unveiled by the third anniversary of the centennial of the armistice, which is the hundredth anniversary of the tomb of the unknown soldier. 2021 they would like it unveiled. they are halfway through the fundraising process. things always take time in d.c. we saw that with the eisenhower memorial. it is complicated when you want a memorial in d.c. here's what the mock looks like. this is a 1/10 scale of it and it will be bronze. it shows from the far left a soldier leaving home, leaving his wife and children, and going through training, meeting all the soldiers. you only see one image where he is looking directly at the viewer. that is the image in the center. that is the portrayal of shell shock. of what we say today is ptsd. back then it was shellshocked and the thousand yard stare they called it. people would be comatose. co
