that is such a marine corps thing.if your name ends in s-k-i and you're a marine, there's no question about it, you're known as ski. i will certainly look into that. i don't have that available offhand, but appreciate the question. >> mr. nevgloski, the marine corps history chief, and owen co in. ner, the curator, joining us in this special edition of the washington journal brought to you by the washington journal and american history tv as we explore d.c. area museums and the american story. mr. conner, to you, sir, coming back to the exhibit and what you have there, specifically related to iwo jima, i want to talk about a picture of some glasses and pens and a brush that are in a case there. can you tell the story specifically of those glasses? >> yeah. well, as a curator we're always collecting the personal stories, and there are objects that marines gathered that sort of meant something to them in the battle, but it also gives us the opportunity to talk about the marine themselves and sort of the characters. and on

marine corps. as a historian i talk the first flag is the most important flag for the veterans that were actually at the bat tle and saw it lifted. second is iconic moment, so when you have two flags up two different stories we can certainly tell. >> the first flag a smaller flag, explain how it went up, and when the change happened, and how far into the battle of it did this all take place? >> well, it was shortly after the marines had landed on 19th of february, they immediately three-pronged attack through the island but they wanted to isolate the mount. and whether n it was isolated, united nations up to see not what they would find, but when they reached the summit they wanted to know they reached the peak and planted the first flag on the island. this flag was a smaller flag not large enough to it be scene. so marines immediately decided to put a larger flag up so they could see it from shore. but lots of stories that they told us the moment the flag went up. you heard ships surrounding the i

awesome for me joining the marine corps. but a century later and kind of connecting to that heritage. kelly: was something that stuck out to me. you have a sailor in rain and a soldier and i can imagine that you guys had a lot of things with your friends and someone . did you guys give each other a hard time about the services. beau: don't give a navy seal too much grief. but when is army infantry and i was in the marine corps years later and his roots were still army infantry partied been and i had that rivalry partied it is all in good fun for unit but he would joke about the equipment we used in whatever. and i would say hey, you've got more marine blood in you than you do anything else and remember that. kelly: can't tell me little bit about how youtube met. how you guys got through this together. >> short and thank you for your service as well. bowen i met through . unique set of circumstances permitted i had started about ten years ago writing a blog and as indicated column about fallen heroes and veterans. in one of t

port pays half the cost and the army corps pays the other half. we're working broadly with community to gain input. if they find interest in a project along the water front to reduce flooding, it could open the door to significant federal funding. two thirds paid by the federal government and one third match on a local basis. so, army corps opens a specific process of developing studies like this and i will say that the word study is a bit of a misnomer. what this effort is driving towards is a tentatively selected plan for flood risk production that would be recommended to congress if the army corps finds federal interest. this is really developing a project. that's a way to think about it. where we are, working on the future of the project, this is a comprehensive model effort looking at flood risk including private building, in the future flood plain through 2090. it is calculating the potential flood damages overtime because that will affect the nation's economy. the army corps uses a planning construct of looking at problems, opportunities, s

i think leaving the marine corps or the infantry it was like the guilt came back. so i struggled for many years even though i stayed in the marine corps doing kind of odds and end things i didn't sign up for. i felt robbed it started me on a downward spiral. it will become something that is self-pity. once you get to that point that's where it's going to start accelerating very quickly. in those moments you are talking about i thought about a lot of things and when they were fighting for every last breath you are looking at this option and that was their legacy that they did and it just made me feel you are going to keep going and fight. are there things you've done since then that help? >> in the example to try to get back into things and making sure you are taking care of yourself. we say in the marine corps there's no such thing and reconnecting with that family. during this book writing process during the research for this i've reconnected to that entire platoon almost. we have a couple of chains and we just annoy each other. >> you've probably done some guidan

now the army locally is finalizing a request to army corps headquarters in d.c. to the assistant secretary of the army to approve a federal waiver authorizing $20.3 million which reflects the level of planning effort that we need to tackle the study. it's a very complicated urban setting. the waiver request will be submitted in late january. we're thankful for the partnership with the army corps to address the sea level rise to the city. provides that the army corps of engineers providing federal interest, this effort could open the door to various significant federal funding for our waterfront. i want to thank the study team for the continued work on the waiver request. the mission rock has been keeping very busy over the months and covid. in the port and mission rock partners closed on all four phases, -- sorry all four phase 1 parcel leases in 2020. that is really a huge milestone. more recentlies, the port issued the first construction permit for parcels a and g. parcel g is an office building that was sublease and become the new global headquarters. construc
