moncef slaoui joins us from miami.d morning to you, doctor. >> doctor: good morning, margaret. >> brennan: have u.s. officials gotten any insight as to how this mor more contagious version of the virus -- what the impact is? we know from the u.k., that version is in at least three u.s. states? >> doctor: yes. so that's the information we have, the virus, it starts to mutate as part of its normal behavior. therefore it is normal to expect there will be variants. what is very important is to study those variants and understand how infectious they are, whether they have more impact in terms of morbidity or morality, and whether they are sensitive to the vaccines that have been developed. on those three counts, based on the information shared with us by the u.k. scientists, and early data that we have here, we think that these viruses -- these virus variants should be under control with this vaccine. fortunelfortunately they are not more deadly, but they are more contagious and will exacerbate the surge we're having. >> br

so why do you think moncef slaoui is floating this idea?ink he's looking forward and understanding now what the logistics are going to be to develop enough product in the pipeline to vaccinate a lot of people. but let's look at the numbers. we've been told that there would be enough vaccine to vaccinate 100 million americans by march. 100 million americans. that's 90 days. that would take, what president-elect biden wants to do, which is to vaccinate 1 million people a day. how many people are we vaccinating right now? we're vaccinating barely a million people a week. about 1.2, 1.3 million people a week. so we would have to do seven times the number of vaccinations per day, you know, to exceed the projected amount of vaccine available to give. so i agree, it would vastly expand the amount of vaccine we have. that doesn't seem to be the problem in this country. >> how does this get fixed, dr. reiner? look, this administration, the outgoing administration has put so much emphasis sonnet vaccine, and it's terrific that there is a vaccine, but

i think the point moncef slaoui has made is, look, we wanted to give the states enough authority to sortis out on their own, but there is no plan. they have nothing to base a distribution plan on because they've never done something quite like this before with these types of vaccines at this scale. so is this an emergency or not? it is. we're not treating it like one. we should. that's the problem. >> so, sanjay, to be clear here the issue is not vaccine supply, there right now is more vaccine being produced and shipped than is being administered, 4 million doses have been put in people's arms, there's more vaccine just sitting there waiting to be put in people's arms. that's the problem. now, there is also a discussion about how maybe to stretch the vaccine supply each further. there are people who have suggested just taking one dose perhaps of the pfizer vaccine or the moderna vaccine, both of which are two-dose vaccines or with moderna splitting one dose into half, giving you 50% of the actual toes of the vaccine. the fda came out overnight and said for now we don't think this is a go

even people like moncef slaoui, who you interviewed, admitted that this was disappointing.vaccine, pretty remarkable. two authorized vaccines by the end of last year, remarkable. keep in mind again, there are certain things like hiv/aids, 40 years have been trying to develop a vaccine, still don't have one. that part was truly worth celebrating. but again, it's not vaccines that matter, it's vaccinations, as we've said so many times. and it's obviously going really, really slowly. i think trying to figure out where the various problems are. how the federal government and the state governments are going to work together and what the private sector is going to do. we started to get some idea from president-elect biden last night during his speech. we'll get more details today on exactly what they're going to do to increase this vaccine rollout. you know, one of the things, off large vaccine fair, a lot of people show up. how are you then accounting for all of them? what sort of software platform will be used to make sure people then show up for their second shots and where th

i mean, moncef slaoui, and i spoke to him about this, he's a vaccine maker. and exactly as you said, they sort of said, look, we make the vaccine for us. that was goal and we accomplished that. but the idea of ultimately, none of this really matters unless they get vaccinated and they get vaccinated with some fairly fast protocol here. it's not going to make the same difference. there's no one who's sort of overseeing that exactly. what they've done, as they've done with testing and ppe in the past and what they've done with many of supplies that we've talked about for several months, the same thing is happening with the vaccines. the states are being forced to figure this out on their own. they were told who should likely be first in line. that guidance was given by the cdc, health care workers, people over the age of 75, pre-existing conditions, things like that. but beyond that, as i was just talking about in florida, even county to county, it differed so much. there is no national strategy here, and that's a shame. there really should be. if the goal was

we heard from the top scientist on "operation warp speed," moncef slaoui. this is a best guess. johnson & johnson he said could get emergency use authorization approval by the middle of next month. you move on to astrazeneca. potentially at some point in march. dr. slaoui said novavax could be march or april. right now they need more participation in trials to find out if the moderna is successful on tweens and teenagers. >> we are running a chin call trial, phase three trial adolescents with 12 to 18 years of age with the moderna vaccine. it is a real challenge. it has been four weeks on going. we only recruited about 800 subjects in the trial. reporter: they have about 800 participants ages 12 to 18 looking whether or not that moderna works on essentially the older age range of children. you heard the doctor there mention that they have some 800 participants but connell, he also said they need about 3,000 to try to get a population together to figure out if it could be successful. connell? connell: all right. that part could take some time. we have a lot going on in the world.

you know, moncef slaoui, who by all accounts did an incredible job, came from the sector of pharma developmentegulation. so you know, i think it sounds like it's an interesting pick, a good pick. he's obviously got a lot of work cut out for him, because we talk about these two vaccines, moderna and pfizer that have been authorized. there may be more on the way. but also, we haven't talked as much about various therapeutics, the monoclonal antibodies, potential other antivirals. there are all of these other things that are sort of out there that are brewing, that he's going to have to sort of be taking command over. >> we know that dr. fauci will be staying on, and not dr. deborah birx, who of course for so long, was one of the faces of the this. it's just interesting to see what choices joe biden is making. >> yeah, i mean, a lot of familiar faces from previous administrations, but it's clear that, you know, some of the folks that were part of the of existing task force are no longer going to be there. you know, i don't know what all of those personnel decisions are yet, what's going to happen

moncef slaoui, who alisyn will speak with in a little bit, and that will be an interesting conversation, has said that unwith possibuone possible way to make up this shortfall is to give people half doses of the moderna vaccine. people 18 to 55 years old will receive a half dose instead of a full dose. what's your reaction to this? >> well, first of all, i think we're solving for the wrong problem. because we have something like 14 million doses that are distributed, but only about 4 million doses that have been given. and so the issue isn't that we don't have enough vaccine. the issues that we're having an administration problem. so we should be trying to figure that out. i do think that it deserves study at some point for us to look at, is there a way for to us ramp up the overall supply. maybe that could be giving half doses, maybe that could be delaying the second dose. but i think we really have to follow the science here. vaccine hesitancy is enough of an issue. what i have been telling my patients, what i as physicians and practitioner have said telling our patients, there were n
