here is little morgan hill right in the middle of that. now, look down here. all that rain is just a steady stream pointed right at the santa clara county. sometimes it lightens up, sometimes it picks up in intensity. but, the important theme of that is it does not stop. that is the characteristic of an atmospheric river, the most important one and can be the most concerning one if you happen to get stuck in it, and that is why we came to morgan hill. because, morgan hill, in the southern part of santa clara county, is right on the very northern edge of that stream. it is really focused down in monterey county. but, here at home, this is the part of the southernmost edge of the bay area that should hunker down and expect it to look, feel, and sounds just like this, for the next 24 hours if not more. we will see what the high resolution forecast models paul will share with you coming up later have to say about that. look at the rainfall totals we have already gotten. when you look at the big numbers that show up there, four inches in boulder creek, that is up i

>> reporter: paul, i was checking the rain gauge in morgan hill and since this started, morgan hill has gotten over three inches of rain. now, here is the comparison that tells this whole story. if you drive north on 101, 25 minutes, no traffic, you get into san jose. have not even gotten an inch there, yet. so, where i come in morgan hill, is just on the edge of what for the next day and a half is going to be a fairly stationary, rainy atmospheric river. >> let me show you what that looks like. you can clearly see what the atmospheric river looks like on a day like today from the satellite. look at that steady stream of solid cloud, in a very narrow band, coming right into the coast of california, from monterey county, and really southward, but also rise up through here. right through this part of santa clara county. look at the rainfall totals. if you watch the accumulated rain, it paints a beautiful picture of how atmospheric rivers can treat a landscape. look at the tail that stretches out into the pacific. that is that plume of higher concentrations of water vapor. placement is eve

we came here to morgan hill, because so far, since this started, morgan hill has gotten 3 1/4 inches of rain. if you drive 20 minutes north, with no traffic since 20 minutes north, you get to san jose, we have only gotten a ton seven inch. a huge difference. and that says so much about the nature of this atmospheric river. look at the clouds on the satellite. you can see how this is set up. there is a steady plume. look at the clouds, in a very narrow ribbon. that is the atmospheric river. that is your conveyor belt of steady rain. right now, it is stationary. that means it rains like this if you are under it. so, here in morgan hill, the southern part of santa clara county, we are just on the very northern edge of it, and from this location southward, we should expect steady rain like this for probably the next 24 hours. certainly until early tomorrow morning. so, it is a good rain, guys. back to you. >> thanks to you both. >>> now to the santa cruz mountains, where a flash flood warning is in effect right now, that is keeping thousands of people away from their homes this evening.

morgan hill and gilroy, a small break in morgan hill but more rain is returning.san francisco, we have some moderate and few heavier pockets and towards richmond as we continue just after midnight. where do we go from here? we have a few spotty showers in the forecast. we try to get some sun breaking out, i think that'll be the pattern we are in tomorrow. the afternoon with some sun mixed in and a little bit of cloud cover as well and the same thing at 5:00 p.m. by the weekend, we dry things out for most of the bay area. off to the north, we are going to see some rain and that's part of our storm. looks like this storm is going to stall out, off the coastline so as we hit saturday and sunday, we'll see a chance of an isolated shower in the north bay. totals to be higher than this and north bay could get hit the most. temperatures tomorrow will be in the 50s no matter where you are headed. it is the same. if you go up to tahoe, 3 to 6 inches of new snow. they are open but check ahead for their guidelines. on my extended forecast, again, a break here as you move thr

the atmospheric river is now moving out over morgan hill. over the santa cruz rain there at the moment. over the bay just a few marcelo huertas over san francisco few showers over the san francisco bay. the atmospheric river will leave us tomorrow morning. then we have an upper area of low pressure. part of the same pattern that brought us the rainfall. that's going to swing over the bay area and that's where we will get a chance of storms tomorrow. what you will see in the forecast is these hit and miss areas of rain as we head through tonight. also through tomorrow's forecast. . we'll see some dry and then a little bit more rain will return, this on again, off again pattern, might get some light thunderstorms that could produce some hail and we'll see it clear out on friday. and dry out by the weekend we do get some sunshine. overall totals half to three-quarter inch in the bay area. you will see some isolated wind gusts, possible thunderstorms. a little bit of small hail and low snow down to 2,000 feet tomorrow. things do dry out friday,

same thing for morgan hill and gilroy. some spots that have seen the heaviest rainfall amounts so far. this is not the only batch of showers. some showers are making their way through the tri-valley. and one more area of showers that will be moving into downtown san francisco and down the peninsula as well. once all this moves through we will see a general drying trend through tonight. the total rainfall amounts out of this will be about a quarter inch or less. north of the golden gate you will hardly get anything. that's just one more burst of rain on top of a ground that is already saturated with the south bay seeing the heaviest rainfall amounts. this is the doppler estimated rainfall map and you can see these bull's-eyes of heavy rain including one to the east of san lucas and one near big sur. with significant problems today near monterey as well. but we will talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes. >>> cleanup is underway in carmel tonight after the river overwhelmed in oceanside lagoon and spent water spil

you can see through morgan hill into gilroy looking at that heavy rain at this hour. as we look to the east debate and the tri-valley looking at scattered showers with light to moderate rain with some brief heavy downpours. you can see still looking at the wet weather. we are also dealing with storm reports. these are hours storm reports within the last three hours of wind damage as well as flash flooding. we are watching this closely. we have a flash flood watch that remains in effect through thursday afternoon. that is for the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains. that flash flood watch for the north bay has been canceled. we are still looking with the heavy rain we saw overnight mudslides, rockslides as well. the high wind warning that is still in effect for san francisco as well as for the coast until 7:00 a.m. today and a wind advisory that is in effect for the rest of the bay area. we have seen wind gusts especially up at our mountain peaks up to 80 miles per hour. through the day we will see some off and on showers with the breezy conditions generally in

our skyranger above the anderson reservoir near morgan hill today. let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. we've been talking about the rain and the weekend forecast but also just how this is all helping our drought. >> and, you know, the reservoirs definitely did go up. that was a positive today. i'd like to see it go up quite a bit more, but, you know, these little small changes definitely would add up to something bigger here if we keep with this rain pattern. so we'll begin with stormranger, our mobile doppler radar. i did want to show you we have cleared out from any kind of storm system. as you can see, those dry conditions across the bay area. rainfall totals pretty epic here. most locations receiving about 2 to 2 1/2 inches on average, but look at the south bay. that's again where the atmospheric river stalled out, and we had totals up as high as 6.54 inches in morgan hill. once again, that was about one month's worth of rain, and we picked that all up in three days. so current reservoir check, we have seen an increase in the yew

morgan hill, 38.it of drizzle far to the north. our big concern here is not going to be any rain. it's going to be this high surf warning because of dangerous swell. we're talking about a long period swell coming from the northwest. this is going to be in effect until 9:00 p.m. tonight. we could see wave heights upwards of 20 plus feet with even taller breakers. so please be careful. keep a safe distance from the coastline. i know it's going to be a lovely day, but you want to be careful. never turn your back to a wave. in addition to that high surf advisory, we're monitoring king tides heading into tomorrow. i want to give you your daytime highs for today. san francisco, 59 degrees. san jose, 61. look at napa, 60. and check out half moon bay, 58. so those king tides as we head into monday and tuesday, we'll see storm generated waves and higher high tides which could bring localized flooding for those low-lying areas around the cost line. i'm talking about the parking lot areas, the trails that run cl

let's get you down to street level around gilroy, monterey road, morgan hill, santa teresa boulevard. we are seeing some intense rain still. san jose area around willow glen, center road, some moderate showers at this hour. and as we take a look at the wider perspective the atmospheric river has been focused right around the central coast since early today. we've been seeing some lightning strikes. i know thunderstorms have developed and some lightning was reported earlier in the day. now, because of where the atmospheric river was focused ben lomond in the santa cruz mountains over four inches of rain. elsewhere anywhere from about half an inch to just over an inch, fairfax almost three inches of rain. as you take a look at those temperatures, they're in the 40s, 50s. it says two on our storm impact scale. moderate strength storm, scattered impact expected through tomorrow. burn scar flood threat continues and gusty winds at times. it is gusty out there across parts of the bay area, not nearly as strong. we had 40 to 80-mile-an-hour winds last night. san jose cameras showing you just
