pete pope here used in tries to understand the origin and development of bugs in the meter thick layer of peat. these are actually my favorite people to taste. these water pete mosses they taste very fine often sulfurous sulfide like a. rock. and of course we have to use all of our senses to better understand nature you know to we always think that we need a lot of devices to measure things but we shouldn't forget as we can do an incredible amount with our eyes and ears our noses and our mouths is really forgotten. there are hardly any a dalit places like this left in germany 99 percent of bugs have been drained and thus destroying this is made them climate killers because all the pate that a bug like this stores is then gradually released into the atmosphere. part of course that's pure stored carbon half of this plant matter consists of carbon and that stored away then grows up layer by layer with us in the order of half a millimeter to one millimeter per year over thousands of years these layers and meters thick and contain a great deal of carbon that spew a climate protection school community which. this only applies to intact since almost all bugs in germany have been drained they give off a lot of greenhouse gases almost 6 percent of total emissions more than air traffic . and. we calculated that if we restore water to drain bogs we will be able to compensate for even more than the warming caused by c o 2 emissions since the industrial revolution. just so we're seeing is a very important step along with creating cooling systems for a world that's getting warmer anyway. that would be desirable but how would it be possible to restore boggs to their natural state in an industrialized country like germany. the largest oil and gas deposits in the north sea off the coast of starving i in no way the plans would mean pumping would continue here but in the opposite direction after those deposits are eventually exhausted but with the c o 2 from european industry really stay underground or will it become a time bomb i think we can use to example that oil and gas is in the ground and it stays there until we try to take it out. and what we're doing essentially is the reverse we are replacing c o 2 in the ground. the headquarters of the norwegian petroleum directorate is also here and stuff it makes decisions on the results is under the north sea issues drilling licenses and inspects rock formations. creature from east is a geologist who has long been searching in the drill core archives for the optimum sediment into which the 1st industrial carbon dioxide will be injected. we have been looking at possible storage options for many years i think i started with this in 2006 and one of the 1st just from our side was information because it's. it is good. that we're looking at what we can't touch it or feel it and feel it is sand with lots of poor space between the grains under the north sea the poorest of the sandstone are filled with water most of the injected c o 2 dissolved in it turning it into sparkling water the bigger the pools the easy at the gas can spread well contest with your own. just blowing it and see if it can and you can get some air through it. and this is quite good no i don't need to too much force on my blow to get the answer. to your hands information which is intended to absorb the c o 2 lines below the troll field a gas deposit that contains another 30 years supply of the fossil fuel in between a several layers of dense shale rock base of enhanced information. because of the above the cold there are some very nice. because of the gas production from us all feel the pressure is falling in this more shallow. means even if there should be a little bit. too from this one. it cannot escape from the under pressure in the overlying sense. so far everything has been going well with the storage of c o 2 in norway at the slightly gas drilling platform more than $1000000.00 tons of c o 2 have been pumped back underground every year for 25 years the northern lights project aims to start with 1500000 tonnes a year. if you look at the sheer magnitude of the problem globally there is a need for. a facility and we're talking hundreds of millions of tonnes per year that needs to be handled. combin capture and storage chilled c.c.'s is also being researched in germany the 2017 experiment was a success the c o 2 remained in the ground and that kept steam in eastern germany but it raised fears of earthquakes and escaping gases since then the story just c o 2 has been politically dead in gemini even the search is essentially for him put it. into it seemed. into the scene where i was also deeply involved in the safe because i would do it i would have gladly built the storage facility at any time without any worry was like a cold or negate us all. a lot of been worried if i put it on the wrong plates in the wrong way with the wrong target he saw liquor. functioning it's clear that countries like germany that emit a lot of c o 2 also have to take responsibility for it he says c.c.'s is indispensable is get upset so. you know there are estimates but in europe we have enough storage space for 1000 years for our c o 2 emissions or woman at the moment we have c.c.'s as a good alternative. if someone has a better one in 30 years all the better. but right now we have to improve the technology so that it's safe and is also controlled safely houses. france used in the top priority when it comes to climate protection is to return the bugs to their natural state and thus stop their c o 2 emissions. given they're taking its region near for stock on the eastern german coast he's researching how i really whetted gold can become the c o 2 store again in the long term. say bob was drained over the centuries this allowed oxygen to penetrate the bog soil and break it down that released a lot of carbon it was really flooded 20 years ago. jury in the period it was without water it was a system in decline. we've calculated that we lost 2.7 metres of peat at this location over the last few decades. and now we're looking to see whether we can not only stop these processes but also turn them around in order to get new peak formation of higher water levels could. the scale of the problem is vast half of northern germany has been drained to grow potatoes or corn or to graze animals a check 10 emits as much c o 2 in a single year 29 tonnes as a car does in a typical lifespan of 200000 kilometers. in hankow seen in the northwest landscape ecologist. is investigating what happens when a drained cold is flooded again he discovered that at 1st it produces methane another very dangerous greenhouse gas. to a few years the me same emissions decrease and then the bulb begins to store c o 2 over the long term. just extrapolated that for all areas that are currently drained globally. and you can see very clearly that the faster we return water to the barbs the better it is for the climate for the. drained make up 7 percent of arab will land in germany is it even possible to turn back time if we take climate protection seriously we have no alternative. but to get dusty when you understand that agriculture on bogues in germany causes annual climate damage of $7400000000.00 euros in the yard corresponds exactly to the total added value of the whole of agriculture then you have to ask yourself a place to water we doing here. there's an activity that causes $789000.00 euros damage per hectare is allowed and even subsidized. because of course these greenhouse gases that are in the cities must be compensated for somewhere else somebody else has to pay for it. it won't be easy to restructure and rakoczy and convince farmers to turn huge areas of farm land into wet bugs again. if we follow the norwegians plan for dealing with seo to europe will soon have lots of facilities like the claymates rude waste to energy plant. he is c.e.o. to is filtered from the flue gases this could serve as a model for other industry sectors that have not yet been able to make their production carbon neutral. yanni cobia because initiated the c.c.s. project at the waste to energy plant in 2014 i'm proud that i believe that it's meaningful to work with this building because this would actually make a difference and this is something we need to do in order to basically save save this world. because once to prove that it's possible to remove c o 2 from industrial emissions the waste to energy plant releases 400000 tons of c o 2 every year the small pilot plant can only collect 1000 tons of it a year but that shows that it can work always comes to the capture rates technology has proven to be extremely you have managed to capture more than 95 percent of the c o 2 from the pilot plant. when it comes to the energy use it's quite an idjit demanding. i that usually makes capturing c o 2 very expensive but that's not a. i'm here in the waste to energy plant there's an abundance of waste heat here. the big challenge is to make capturing c o 2 economical it share in the flue gases is only 5 to 10 percent it's important to find the right chemicals that combined and enrich the c o 2 they are then removed with heat and used again. because. it's quite costly today because we are at the very beginning of the developments there are only a few plants today and none of them are actually all in industrial sources the biggest challenge is that today the economy is not favoring handling of c o 2 it is a more attractive business voice simply to the c o 2. high price the c o $2.00 could make carbon capture and storage increasingly attractive since around top of the waste in this waste to energy plant consists of biomass c o 2 is even in directly extracted from the and because when this biomass grows it absorbs c o 2. if this is trapped during incineration and bunkered away it reduces the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. we've got c o 2 negative and we know that we need to develop c o 2 negative solutions in order to reach the paris agreement so waste to energy the waste energy business can be very important in the matter. so this is what the future of getting c o 2 out of the atmosphere could look like. houston is in his favorite place the calendar off medicaid's here you can see how peak than scroll in their natural. what state they don't really see 02 but instead absorb it and yet they can still be used for agriculture by growing reads a lot can be made out of these 3 grooves plastics bio gas. so we hope machines are reeds are an example of a plant that can be harvested sustainably without damaging with more sure. there are already many ideas about what can be cultivated in bogs in hand housing in western germany large areas of moss being cultivated for the 1st time on a regretted bog after all most is that the natural vegetation on people oaks can they be grown and harvested like any other field crop. the search for the best most is for agricultural cultivation is underway on the edge of the trial area i knew paga and her team grow muscles from all over the world here they aim to find the ones that grow as well and just quickly as possible in this way they also absorb c o 2 and turn the bugs into sinks with greenhouse gases however it will take more for most is to become a profitable product. so our long is a been strong direct payments to support and subsidies for farmers are not yet established it's almost irene why do you suppose but we can show here on the demonstration farm that this is actually feasible was much as well as what we can harvest into a large scale implementation really depends on political will on further technological development of and pete muntean joins me now. pete, wow, that pilot was so calm on that may day call. you're a pilot yourself. what does that call tell you about the situation? what do you think was going through the pilot's mind right there. >> calm, cool, collected but they had to deal with something that is honestly not happened very often in aviation. an uncontained engine failure of this jet engine, where essentially is blew it apart according to folks on the ground, we heard from them they heard a loud boom. and then you see the images of the parts in people's yards. the one that looks like the front of the engine calling ecowling or nacelle. they say it was in the right engine of the boeing 777. and now the hard work begins of having to sift through literally all the pieces to try and piece this back together to figure out exactly what happened. 231 people onboard and ten crew. hats off to them because they did a stellar job of not only having to figure out the problem, and work through it, strategize through it, but keeping the airplane under control. a twin engine airplane like the 777 here is not particularly easy to fly when you've lost one engine. there is one under each wing. when you lose one of them, no longer producing power, no longer producing thrust it's like a big boat anchor you threw out the other side. you've lost half the power for the airplane. makes it hard to climb, only got up to 13,000 feet. normal cruising altitude. and it makes it harder to maneuver and turn. they requested the immediate turn you heard in the atc audio back to the airport. we have seen imaging and heard audio of applauding cabin of 231 passengers could not be more grateful to be on the ground after the crewed decided they needed to get on the ground right now. >> right. many of the videos and images are from the passengers showing the engine on fire. tell us more about what we're seeing in the images of debris and how unusual it is for an engine to not only fail but also for parts to fall to the ground like this. >> very, very rare. and it speaks to this force of this boom that we have heard reported. you're seeing materials that are very, very fortified and very strong, carbon fiber expos ip, kevlar, aluminum. there is a lot happening inside a turbine jet engine. not only incredibly high heat but things moving very, very fast. so for this to happen it can also cause a lot more imagine as sort of the emergency wears on. the crew needs to happen -- the crew needs to react almost in an instant. not only do they have to overcome their startle factor of the fact that they have to realize what has just happened but any also have to work through a procedure that they've drilled for over and over to shut the engine down, shut off fuel to it to make sure it's not a risk, so that it doesn't continue burning and fly the airplane. but the pieces are so key to the investigation. we know the ntsb is flying out to the scene. something they have not done a lot this the pandemic. they are looking particularly at the, pieces aen talking to pratt and whitney the engine manufacturer to figure out what went wrong. >> on the phone with me we have rachel welty, a spokeswoman for the pomsds in broomfield colorado where the massive pieces hit the ground. rachel, thanks for coming on. if you would, just tell us what is happening on the ground? and most importantly, was anybody hurt at all. >> thanks, pamela for having me on. remarkably we have no reports at this time of any injuries. after seeing those pictures taken which really spans about a mile across broomfield at this point that we're looking at, it's amazing nobody was injured. we started to get the first reports of the debris and the loud explosions about 1:08 mountain time. and shortly there after our police officers reported finding the debris in several people's' yards across broomfield. we are getting reports of damage to homes and vehicles. but no injuries reported at this time. >> that's really really remarkable. i'm just curious what the first calls were like. what did people make of the big pieces of metal flying from the sky in what were those -- what did they say in the calls? >> right, so, shock. we were hearing people saying a plane is falling from the sky. a lot of the pictures you're seeing is of our park. commons park in broomfield. it's a huge area with a dog park, play grounds. we have tons of people on any given weekend in in park. and a lot of families were out enjoying the nicer weather because it is in the 50s today in colorado. and that's when they started to see the debris falling from the sky. they called 911. they said a plane is falling from the sky. they saw black smoke and heard an explosion. a lot of people were frightened and calls coming in frantically. >> understandably. just how big is the area the parts are spread across? and how are the police officers handling all of this evidence now? >> right so it's a very massive area. it's commons park which stretches anywhere from a quarter mile to a half mile. and then two additional neighborhoods. so we consider this a massive field or a massive area, investigation field it's the north more and red leaf neighborhoods as well. and the biggest pieces of the plane were just adjacent to commons park in the north more neighborhood. those are the images you were seeing on social media of the giant pieces of plane in peoples' front yard. we are looking the to a mile, mile and a half of debris. right now our officers with are securing the areas. we're asking people to tell us -- call us as 303438, 640 oh that is the number for dispatch or 911. tell us if you have debris in your yard or home. we don't want you to touch it. the ntsb wants everything to remain intact. we are doing our best to secure the area and keep it intact for the ntsb who is in route at this time. >> and have you been in touch with the ntsb? >> i personally have not. but our police department has. and they dispatched a group to come to the area about an hour and a half, two hours ago. i did see their newsroom put information out not long ago they are on the way. >> rachel welty of broomfield colorado pomds. i imagine this is not how you expected to spend saturday. but thankfully no oneeninged. really remarkably. thank you so much rachel. >> thank you. >>> well, i want to bring in cnn analyst and inspector general at the dp and miles o'brien. and aviation correspondent pete muntean. mary let's start with you. this looks like it could have been catastrophic. so far, though, no injuries reported on the ground. and we know that everyone on the plane is safe. what does that tell you? >> well, there is a small amount of luck of course. but it also goes to the training and skill of the pilots, also the air traffic control helped them get back to the airport. but i've worked out accidents like this in the past. and the debris from the uncontained engine failure, literally the engine sproeding, if you will, in laymen's terms, could have pierced the cabin injured people onboard. it could have pierced the fuel tank. in one accidental years ago it cut the fuel lines. so we're fortunate. of course training and everyone knew how to respond, both in the plane and of course at air traffic control. but to put this in perspective, though, the ring you see is big enough when it's on the aircraft, someone can stand in that. and that's just a little tiny part of the plane.
pete muntean joins me now. pete, wow, that pilot was so calm on that may day call. you're a pilot yourself. what does that call tell you about the situation? what do you think was going through the pilot's mind right there. >> calm, cool, collected but they had to deal with something that is honestly not happened very often in aviation. an uncontained engine failure of this jet engine, where essentially is blew it apart according to folks on the ground, we heard from them they heard a...

pete buttigieg to be secretary of transportation. we all know the nominee as mayor pete, a man who basically came onto the national stage as a midwest mayor who had lots of enthusiasm for making investments in america's future. so today we're considering his nomination to be secretary of transportation at a time when we need a lot of work done on transportation. and in my opinion, he's a young, energetic mayor who is going to help us usher in a new era of transportation. that means there's going to be a lot of bipartisan dialogue about how we get there, but this job should not be underestimated in the importance that the transportation secretary and the investments for the future need. that is, our transportation system serves as a backbone of our economy and when it's not doing well, the consequential impacts of that affect our economy. it affects how our business compete in a global economy. it affects ho you people get to and from work, and it affects their home life as well. so it's a big job that we have, and i know that this mayor and future secretary of transportation understands how big this challenge is. we've underinvested in our infrastructure for decades. in the past ten years alone we underfunded our infrastructure needs by $1.5 trillion. the american society of engineers estimates that we need to invest $5.6 trillion in our infrastructure over the next two decades or the united states stand to lose about $10.3 trillion in g.d.p. i know this because my state knows this. i think the presiding officer knows this as well. if the transportation infrastructure doesn't work, goods and services don't get through your ports. they don't get to their destination. and businesses choose other vehicles or other avenues for the products to be delivered. america needs to be competitive. and the american public also knows that poor infrastructure and the problems that they see in their communities have to be addressed, whether that's concrete crumbling off of bridges, delayed trains, buses, congestion, railroads, or any of the many issues. just this week a highway in california slid into the ocean disrupting traffic along the famous highway 1. and this could be a delay for months. i know again the presiding officer understands this as well as the state of washington. mother nature doesn't always comply with our transportation needs. so while these investments and numbers may seem huge to people, it is what this investment will enable that we need to keep focused on. we need to focus on the fact that the united states makes and grows things and we need to get them to their destinations. we need people to be able to get to their place of employment. so we need someone at the department of transportation who is enthusiastic about taking on these challenges and helping president biden administer a new era of transportation and the challenges that we face. mayor buttigieg, a harvard graduate, rode scholar, former united states reservist who i believe served in afghanistan also understands the challenges of small-town mayors and transportation systems and the impacts they could have. he knows the challenges we now face because of covid-19, that there is a new burden on our transportation system because of the impacts of lost revenue. state departments of transportation estimate $50 billion in lost revenues over the next five years. airports have lost $23 billion because of people no longer flying. transit agencies have lost an estimated $350 billion by -- $50 billion by the end of 2021. to these losses will continue to compound until we find the best way to protect our transportation workers, our travelers, and continue to help with personal protective equipment, testing, vaccines, clear health-based protocols to help return safety to our transportation system and public confidence. that is one of the reasons why we're fighting so hard for this next package of investments. president biden took decisive action by mandating people wear masks which is a giant step forward in our transportation system. i think there's more we can do and hopefully our colleagues can work together on that. the long-term revenue outlet for transportation also is changing and so it will be a long time before its recovery. so i believe that mayor pete buttigieg is the right choice for this job because he was mayor of south bend. he dealt with infrastructure where the rubber meets the road managing state, federal, and local resources to help build infrastructure in his community. he also helped facilitate public-private partnerships for the dollars to go farther and important models for future investments in transportation. one of those projects, the south shore double track project whose full funding grant agreement was signed earlier this month is like many other state and local projects. the south shore double track demanded impressive coordination between the federal, state, and local governments to bring it to fruition. mayor buttigieg's smart street initiative also shows he nows how to operate and succeed in a current environment and will be able to help communities around the country replicate the success that he had at south bend. he won't be the first mayor to be the secretary of transportation, but i think we can say that
pete buttigieg to be secretary of transportation. we all know the nominee as mayor pete, a man who basically came onto the national stage as a midwest mayor who had lots of enthusiasm for making investments in america's future. so today we're considering his nomination to be secretary of transportation at a time when we need a lot of work done on transportation. and in my opinion, he's a young, energetic mayor who is going to help us usher in a new era of transportation. that means there's...
