he got wounded quite badly and was sent home with a purple heart, and my uncle felix, my mother's older brother, went to north africa and fought as a foot soldier with general paton. during this period of time, my father and his older brother were given a deferment to run the ranch and so forth. and it was just a chaotic period of time. a lot of the families moved to eastern l.a.. the majority went to albuquerque. santa fe had what they called round house where they overhauled locomotives and so forth. a lot of men sought employment there. my father got a job at the bronze hospital in santa fe. they were just at the time building it. and he drifted back and forth with that job. he was also a truck driver. he drove trucks to arizona. and there were times that we would only see him on weekends. we moved to santa fe, a very small, simple, one room apartment, no bigger than this office, in fact smaller. it was on point of east, right off the highway. the woman who ran the place was mrs. gomez and it was a unique little place, because it took in individuals who didn't have a lot of income, s
