white house. i found that in the lincoln book, it gave me an opportunity to take a perspective on lincoln as employer, as boss, as manager of the white house the way that he used to politically, socially, and otherwise, and i found that very interesting and different from what had been written before, and i thought the same thing should work with jefferson, and i hope it has. the second thing i guess is i worked in washington myself for eight or nine years in the '70s and '80s on capitol hill and elsewhere, and it used to strike me then that it must have been an entirely different place back when it was kind of a wilderness capitol, and i've always found that interesting and worth looking at more carefully. so those are the basic reasons why i focused on the white house. >> so we'll start at the beginning of the story, the election of 1800 was famously contentious and acrimonious. can you tell us a little bit about it? and did john adams welcome thomas jefferson to the white house? >> well, first

let's get straight to the white house right now and kaitlan collins. the president is strongly defending his pandemic stimulus package. update our viewers. >> reporter: he is. and what president biden said in the oval office tonight is that he doesn't understand how republicans can oppose this plan though we should note they did for the majority since no congressional republicans have actually embraced or signed on or said that they would vote for this bill. but president biden is touting it as integral to his pandemic response and how the next few months will look and how the plan could shape this. but this comes as there are new questions about the white house's embrace or i guess rather lack thereof new cdc guidance on reopening schools and whether or not teachers should be vaccinated in order to do so. on track to get his coronavirus relief bill passed by next month, president biden said today republicans who don't support it are making a mistake. >> i asked a rhetorical question. those who oppose the plan. what didon't they like, what particular p

white house. the key differences between these two plans, and what is it that the -- that the biden administration says that they absolutely won't accept? >> well, the price tag is a big difference given how big the numbers are and how far apart they are. that's something that the white house focused on today, but even when you look inside these packages you can see some differences, though there's similarities in what they are laying out in the proposals and allotments for different areas are pretty different and one of them is the stimulus checks that, of course, we have seen laid out, the $1,400 checks in the proposal from the white house but what the republicans are suggesting are narrow concerns, heard some concerns over centrist democrats over what that look like and who exactly it would be that would qualify for them but what this group of republicans being led by susan collins by putting this forward is saying there is a path to a coronavirus relief bill that could get bipartisan support.

how does the white house view that as any different?> look, the president is -- joe biden is the president. he's not a pundit. he's not going to opine on the back-and-forth arguments, nor is he watching them that are taking place in the senate. >> reporter: let me ask you about the covid relief package. yesterday the ways and means committee democrats proposed limiting the $1,400 direct payments to those making $75,000 or less. is that something that president biden supports and does he have any concerns that progressives might not be on board with that? >> the president has conveyed from the beginning that he's open to having a discussion about the thresholds. he's been firm in his resolve that americans should be made whole on the $2,000 checks which would mean that -- be maintaining his firmness on the $1,400 checks. there's been a discussion about the thresholds and what thould should look like. he doesn't feel that families making over $250,000 a year should be the target of this stimulus. it will reach a certain top threshold wher

>> the white house readout leaves that unclear, but white house officials have told us at "the post" and i've seen it reported elsewhere that the purpose of the call was to lay the groundwork for the release of this document. it was to warn that this is coming and this is why. and i think it's also notable that president biden apparently insisted that he speak only with the king and that the crown prince not be on that call and that biden going forward would deal only with the king. >> we also just got some news from the state department. a statement on a new policy that they're announcing called the khashoggi ban, which will, quote, allow the state department to impose visa restrictions on individuals who acting on the behalf of a foreign government are believed to have been directly engaged in serious extraterritorial counterdissidence. the state department is imposing restrictions on 76 saudi individuals. i wonder, is that going to apply to the crown prince? >> i think that's not clear. i think the biden administration has steered around that issue. they had a chance to say so exp

the white house reached out to him?psaki: we have been in touch with senator manchin for many weeks and will continue to move forward. not only is he a key partner to the president and to the white house on this package, but on his agenda. we will remain in close touch with him. >> reporter: and in regards to -- what are the efforts made with a response to ally such as japan, e.u., britain and has there been any contact with china to discuss the situation? >> press secretary psaki: well, we have had intensive consultations at multiple levels with allies and partners in the region and around the world. i would expect many of those would come through the state department. so it is certainly referred to them for more specifics. >> reporter: you said that you might take action. you referred to burma and the president's statement he only uses burma. is that indicative of a former shift of how to refer to that confusion? >> press secretary psaki: our official policy is that we say burma but mia martin certain communications.
