joining me now is cnn's shimon prokupecz and donie o'sullivan. shimon, what are you seeing at the capitol today first and foremost and hearing about these threats? >> reporter: well, certainly there is a sense of high alert because of the threat. we have the fencing, which has been out here for weeks now, this fencing with the razor wiring. the other thing that we're seeing a lot of today, certainly is more national guard troops on the front line here. i've been out here since about 5:30 this morning kate, and more troops have shown up from when we were here first this morning. you could see there is about a dozen or so here heavily armed. so the idea that anyone would be able to get through here would be pretty difficult. of course, this threat that officials have been talking about is based off of chatter, chatter of a militia wanting to breach the capitol either through explosives or other measures to try and get inside. and authorities here are not taking anything for granted. certainly there is a lot of chatter before january 6th and we coul

donie, going back to president trump, and this idea that he has a plan. if he were to come out and officially just denounce qanon, not a wink and a nod, not a sort of read-between-the-lines statement, if he was to definitively come out and say this is wrong, would any of this make a difference at this point? >> it really would because i spoke to a former qanon believer. she actually gave up on qanon when she saw that martial law wasn't declared on inauguration and she saw this talk about march 4th. i said what at that point would've made her stop believing in qanon. she said if trump came out and condemned this. all of these ridiculous conspiracy theories all still have their basis in the big lie, that the former president continues to perpetuate, which is that he in some way did not lose the election. >> about as unamerican as you can get not coming out and condemning it given that his words have so much power. thank you both so much. >>> and with me now for more on this is congressman reuben gallego. thanks so much for joining us. you were at the capito

that lie is perpetuating not just through today but indefinitely and i think donie hit it correctly, these crazy conspiracy theories, and this sort of -- i guess it is the crazies, but that you look at and that we hear, they're actually acting under a rational political plan being propagated by the gop and trump which is essentially that the votes were illegitimate and until we see it as politics supported by violence which is terrorism, we won't be able to solve this problem. it is not about bipartisanship. this is about -- this is about an entire party endorsing and embracing violence for political gain. we never anything like that so the threat environment is going be higher. >> but there are people like republican congressman from texas mike mccaul who said the president could do a lot to stem this. listen to what he said. >> president trump has a responsibility to tell them to stand down. this threat is credible. and it is real. it is a right-wing militia group. >> this is the second chance that trump has to do that, juliette. what kind of difference do you think it would make?
