miguel marquez joins us now. miguel, what are they pointing to for this surge in cases? is it the kind of thing we've been talking about? the lifting of these restrictions but also people just feeling, hey, we're on the other side of this? >> yeah, it's a mix of things, jim. as vaccinations go up, infections are going up and people's guards are going down and that's sort of the big picture reason why. the economy is opening here. more social gatherings. lots of team sports going on. they're trying to test more, but testing has come down as well. it's harder to get a fix on where those outbreaks are and how to deal with them. more than anything, hospitalizations really tell the story of where this is. and while it's growing, the number of infections is growing between 10 and 19-year-olds and 20 and 29-year-olds. if you look at a chart that a health organization here in michigan put together, 30 to 39-year-olds, just in the month of march, their hospitalizations have gone up 633%. 40 to 49 age group, 800% up in hospitalizations. you should see on that chart there's a littl

. >> miguel marquez joins us now. you've done incredible work.the pandemic basically shut everything down. a lot of folks at home, understandably, have some degree of covid fatigue. having spoken to so many people who have lost loved ones, people who have lost their own battles with covid, what's your message to those who say that they just want to move on? >> reporter: well, sadly, one epidemiologist we spoke to, boris, put it this way. he thought that it could be worse. this could be a much more deadly virus and it could spread a lot more easily. in some ways, this was a warning. and he also suspects, because the world is so interconnected and we fly everywhere and there's so many more people inhabiting the planet that we will see more pandemics ahead. so for as horrible as this past year was, and i mean we are a ptsd nation, a ptsd world right now, for as bad as it was, it could be worse. and this hour tries to get at sort of everything that america went through, the suffocating sadness of those who lost loved ones, over a half million people

we begin with miguel marquez live in detroit on the worsening pandemic. miguel? >> reporter: yeah, good morning there, john. look, cases are up not only here in michigan but in many places across the country, and guards are going down and going down fast in a lot of places. cases among 10 to 19 years old in michigan are the fastest growing numbers, but there's nothing more elelustrytive than the hospitalizations. that's what tells you out there. one health organization in michigan worked up a chart that in march alone those 30 to 39 hospitalizations are up 633% for 40 to 49s, hospitalizations are up 800%. you can see in that chart at around the late 50s where it breaks, where people start to get vaccinated the hospitalizations go way down. health officials begging people to pay attention that this is still a pandemic and they have to take care. the newly-installed cdc director, centers for disease control, was nearly brought to tears as she went off script to make that plea. >> now is one of those times when i have to share the truth and i have to hope and trust

cnn senior national correspondent miguel marquez is live in michigan this hour.what's behind this spike? >> yeah, what is happening is that the people that are not being vaccinated, you are seeing those numbers skyrocket as people start to gather, as mobility goes up, as businesses open up, as schools open, as sports, as kids start to play sports again. they are trying here in michigan to increase testing as quickly as possible. but the numbers are staggering. in michigan, week on week, from last week to this week, a 56% increase in the number of cases. but maybe the best number in all of this are the hospitalizations because, you know, younger people, we've heard, don't get as quick. what they are finding is that more and more younger people are checking into the hospital. one health organization here in the state charted that from march 1st to march 23rd the 30 to 39 group, 633% increase in hospitalizations in that group for 40 to 49, an 800% increase in hospitalizations. the biggest group that is growing here is 10 to 19 right now. those are the ones that are
