>> rutgers is the first one else vaccines will be required but it is not going to be the last.ecision every college and university is going to make and they owe it to their students to make their decisions now so the students know what is expected of them and if a student is skeptical of the vaccine they can make their college decision accordingly. this vaccine is wonderful progress, there are students telling campus reform they have questions about it or may be holding off for religious or medical reasons. rutgers's policy allows for that and i would hope other colleges would do the same because if there is anything we have learned in the past year in this country it is mandates just don't work. there are too many unique human situations for one rule to apply to everyone. colleges need to stake their claim early and students deserve the right to make their decisions based on that information. >> i believe schools have a right and can and should require vaccines as a condition for students attending in person. we have all seen the public health risk that covid has created killi

what do you think of this requirement at rutgers?ansmission of the virus. >> okay. and i want to talk to you about your research because it impacts people with kids, women in their lives. a new study that you worked on released thursday suggesting pfizer and moderna's vaccines are effective for producing antibodies in pregnant women and also in passing immunity to their babies through the umbilical cord and breast milk. such an important find here. what does this mean for the future of the pandemic and where we are? >> i think it provides great evidence for pregnant and lactating women that they will respond similarly to their pregnant productive age counterparts to the vaccine and there is likely benefit conferred through transfer of the antibodies to the blood and breast milk. >> in order to pass along through the umbilical cord or breast milk, do the women get the vaccine whale they were participating in this study or did they get the vaccine before and they are still able to pass it on? >> so in this study we looked at pregnant w

>> well, rutgers is the first maybe but it's certainly not going to be the last.s is an attempt by rutger and other places to essent create herd immunity in their population as if anyone all the students are going to be vaccinated and ideall many of the staff as well, you have herd immunity in that group of individuals that will protect everybody else around them which is fantastic. i also think that a lot of studen are going to feel safer attend a university where everyb else is protected too. i do think that there will need to be exemptions made for indivi who are unable to get the vaccine, don't want it for so particular reason. and i think there are ways to do that. for example, can you say, if you're unable to be vaccinated, maybe instead you replace that by having weekly testing or twice weekly testing to ensure that you're not also carrying corona >> that's an interesting aspect of it. they do have exemption for medica or religious reasons. they say anyone that is studying remote they are not required to do it. i'm curious if it offers an opport as you say,

msnbc lindsey reiser is live at rutgers.rk, and what's been the reaction so far? >> geoff, good morning to you. they say this is the first step towards a pre-pandemic normal here at rutgers. they're going to require all 71,000-plus of their students on all three campuses to be vaccinated by the fall. if they decline, they have to stay online. they're only offering exemptions for medical or religious leaders. students can still register for classes but in order to be on campus or live at one of the dorms, they have to show proof of the vaccine as part of the immunization requirement. as for teachers they have 23,000 staff and faculty members encouraged to get the vaccine but not required. and this decision was made after president biden said he was going to ask all states to open up eligibility to all adults by may 1. of course, we saw explosions of cases on college campuses during the pandemic. but this still raises a lot of questions about vaccine hesitancy and also the logistics about this. some students are welcoming the
