we want to bring back in msnbc's anne thompson outside windsor castle. ing, including the coffin of prince philip has already been moved. what can you tell us about that event and what we are expecting to see in just a couple of minutes on the long walk? >> reporter: so, for the last week the coffin of prince philip has laid -- has been in a private chapel where members of the royal family could pay their respects. today it has moved into a hall in windsor castle, and then it will be about, at about 9:30, a little after 9:30 will be put on the land rover that he designed to make its way to st. george's chapel. that is the bying you see over my shoulder that has the balustrades and the arched windows. it will make its way through here. it will go through the grounds of windsor castle and the military that you see there that is now marching up the long walk, they will stand at the quadrangle to pay their final respects to prince philip. i think when you look at his life, he had two great loves in his life. one, obviously, queen elizabeth, when he was marrie

for "sunday today," anne thompson, new york. >> anne, thank you very much.welcome sign of spring, major league baseball opened its season on thursday. the games began just days after the passing of one of the game's great figures who was much more than a ballplayer. after joining the navy as a teenager and serving during world war ii, bobby brown signed with the new york yankees in 1946. known for his clutch hitting in the world series and as the roommate of yogi berra, he won four titles with the yankees. he wanted to be a doctor. he attended medical school, usually missing most of spring training to studies. while playing for the yankees in 1952, brown was called up by the army medical corps and sent to serve in the korean war. he landed with his unit on october 1st, the same day his teammates were playing the first game of the world series. brown missed out on two world series titles during his 19 months overseas as a surgeon. he returned to play for the yankees briefly before retiring in the summer of 1954 at the age of 29 to begin his medical residency

let's go to my colleague, ann thompson, joining me live from windsor at the end of a long day of reportingo you. >> reporter: alex, first of all, i have to say that even though this was a pared down funeral, as you said, only 30 people allowed rather than what should have been 800, you never got that sense from watching it. it was beautiful in its simplicity and that's exactly what prince philip wanted. in fact, he dictated many of the touches that you saw today, but i think by far, the most striking image of all was that of his wife, queen elizabeth, walking by herself, being by herself, mourning her husband of 73 years, to see her sitting in what they call the choir in st. george's chapel. that's q-u-i r-e. it was really touching, and she couldn't have her family very close to her because of covid protocols here, so here in this great moment of grief, she was all by herself. other moments that struck me were all the little touches, the naval cap and his sword on prince philip's coffin, which was carried by the land rover that he designed. as you said, the music was beautiful, and it was

as we watch these images, let's turn to anne thompson. she's in windsor. s been looking more deeply into the life of the duke of edinburgh. anne? >> reporter: savannah and hoda, i think one of the great legacies of the duke of edinburgh is something that's called the duke of edinburgh award. it is what he described as a do-it-yourself kit for growing up. something he had to figure out how to grow up on his own. it's basically a series of events that you complete, and you can take any specialty, from cooking to canoeing if you want. clearly, his life you see there, you see his naval cap on top of his coffin. his sword on his coffin, as well. he was very dedicated to the military. today, there are 14 different military units that are on the quadrangle that are part of this service. they're there to say good-bye and thank you. a final salute to a man who gave so much of his life to this country, his adopted country, and taught a sense of duty. savannah and hoda? >> anne, thank you. let's pause and watch as the coffin is placed on the land rover he helped desig
