any general assembly, statehouse, the congress itself. they have a lot of people and a lot of personalities. given my background the big family group at a march i felt like home to me. over the years i made friends on both sides of the aisle but fortunately almost everybody who served. when i got to congress republicans up in the minority for 36 years, it became obvious to me there was never a real effort or belief that they could ever be a majority. my younger colleagues in newark colleagues and few of the season colleagues begin to believe in the early '90s that we could be a majority. in 1994 with the contract with america newt gingrich being our leader at the time we became the first republican majority in 40 years of the u.s. congress. that was a number for leader in the house and served there for four years, newt gingrich left in 1998 and i got bounced out of leadership because people thought i was too close to newt gingrich. but as chairman of the workforce committee one of the most compelling jobs, i was the chairman of the commit
