half white. she grew up in a largely white suburban connecticut. when she had two young children she and her husband moved to austin texas. you move to a city and you learn where do you live where the schools all the questions you have as a parent. she was question all of these little ways by the housing crisis and neighborhoods that were encouraged by real estate brokers and school waiting systems to grading schools into the part of austin that is highly segregated. she spent about one year with her children in that very good school highly segregated white privileged school and realized it wasn't conforming to her values to send children to that type of school environment. so she did something on her own the city would not desegregate our schools and i would do it for myself for our family so she ends up sending her to children to a school in east austin the most black and brown neighbor had it is a much more enriching experience. host: i was a beautifully told story and a very clear example of at the ferry micro level that the book so beautifully

and yet there are more white students in the population overall, but the number of white students not reading at proficiency in reading dwarfs that of black students not reading. so critical race theory posits that any racial disparity must be skewed as systemic racism is unlikely that systemic racism is the reason that nearly four million students in fourth grade, white students in fourth grade, eighth grade and 12th grade are not reading at level. i think what we have to realize is that our country is in the midst of a decades-long literacy crisis. and they're both due to in school and out of school factions, the lack of content for each curriculum, increasing instability in family structure, lack of access in choice to high-quality schools, lack of teachers that are able to effectively teach reading. my concern is critical race theory is becoming a massive distraction to what the core issue is for kids of all races. and i think leaders are trying to stop the spread of critical race theory, which i can talk about in more detail. but we really have to hone in on the fact that only a
