you know, you have mentioned one that i did a report with derek hamilton in congress earlier and chuck collins, head of inequality.org. we talked about for the employment, african-americans, people were talking about the economy is bouncing back and african-american unemployed rate is near 10%. that is i think the height of what white unemployed it was during the great recession. so we see these great issues and challenges, and again, i think the country has to have a new, strong goal around homeownership. we put out a report called 60% black on him -- black homeownership, a radical goal for black homeowner development. we have an idea of how we ensure a majority of americans and what type investments and subsidies we put forward to make that a reality. host: they're on twitter talking about the issues of credit scores. how it rises and falls and other aspects of this important element of money lending and borrowing. guest: i would think in the context of racial, equitable -- equity inequality, when you have lower well, you have lower income and greater job instability as a whole. blacks and l

there is big tension between the senate majority leader chuck schumer and republican senator susan collinsion to investigate the capitol insurrection. some of it goes back to the campaign. schumer says it's all a big misunderstanding. >> one other thing is winning over republicans is important. one of the republicans we talked to is susan collins. she's critical of your handling of the vote on the january 6th commission. she said she's perplexed at the state of your relationship. >> it was a misunderstanding. i was always for her changes. i told our democratic colleagues i'm for them. it was a misunderstanding. i hope she can find the other four votes among the republicans. >> she said you didn't stand up and you told her to lower voice and volunteered it could be condescending and sexist the way the interaction went. >> it was a misunderstanding. i like to get along with everybody. >> you can fix that relationship? >> i hope so. >> kind of a shrug on the hope so, there. there's some history here. senator collins was -- a i don't get that frchlt democrats are supposed to try to beat republ

kaitlan collins from the white house. manu to you first. chucke for next tuesday. food is the holiday and then the week. democrats don't have much time now. what's going to happen? >> there was no expectation they would get the votes to pass this in the senate. they need 60 votes in order to even bring it to the floor to open debate. they won't get that. in fact they probably will just get the 50 votes. manchin himself has not said if he would vote yes on the first procedural vote. but he is expected to do so assuming they can reach a deal on what joe manchin is talking about. he is proposing a paraed back of the democrats sweeping election overall is. he does not support the plan. but the plan of his would include a number of things making election day a national holiday, voter id requirements to try to get some republican support. that's why he pushes the voter id issue. but democrats work with him on that. and that's still unlikely to win over any republicans who believe simply that as mitch mcconnell says that this is not necessary at this ti

collins are very close personally. could he win at least three or four republicans over with this? >> i'm skeptical, chuck, partly because mitch mcconnell has come out and called this compromise this outline from joe manchin rotten. and the reason for that is that it would actually set federal standards for elections. and that really as opposed to states having control over it the foundation of the bottom of this debate and i think it's really hard to bring republicans along in this environment on this question. that's a pretty dramatic shift from previous decades where the parties were willing to work together to a certain extent on these kinds of voter protections. but it's really become an existential issue. each sees this as their path to -- they want to frame it. in reality this is a fight of over who is most likely to hold power in the future. so, i just think they may get lisa murkowski, but i would be surprised if it went much beyond that. >> other than maybe complaining about gerrymandering because they have such an advantage right now in the legislature. everything else here is one of those, how

collins, from romney, two of our reporters. what? are you as close as they are saying you are? >> look, chuck, i think we're very, very close.ment is the right way to put it. i think there are still some outliers that haven't been agreed upon totally. but we're very, very close. and i'm hopeful that we can get something nailed down, hopefully by the end of the day if not next week. >> you took some form of taxes off the table. can you give us a hint as to what ideas are in it? >> part of what i'm concerned about is that maybe what we're pronging on the up ins, on the pay fors, because they're not taxes. they're fees. they're funds. they're different vasts or pots of money that we can draw out of. and, chuck, i would love to tell you each and every one of them. it's kind of washington stuff, quite frankly. but in the end, i don't want this to be smoke and mirrors. i want this to be real dollars because it's going to be real spending on infrastructure. >> are we looking at real money? one of the big disagreements between biden's ask and what the republican leadership had responded with, i mean, you know, 800 billion wasn't rea

senator susan collins says there is a framework for the package here. senator chuck schumer left the meeting yesterday saying they were on the same page. senator dick durbin said today that democrats want to see a bipartisan agreement on infrastructure and same time thinking of rec sim ages for the rest of the democratic agenda. >> senator schumer wants to move on this quickly, perhaps in july. maybe that is wishful thinking. the sooner the better. this is a major undertaking, budget resolution, reconciliation, each and every committee sooner the better. the american people have important priorities they want to see addressed. reporter: group that hashed this out at the white house. senator joe manchin, senator murkowski going in awe fines ago. swing vote is senator manchin, but will vote for the infrastructure plan but will not be guaranteed he votes yes on the reconciliation bill. >> we have to see, you vote for this, that i vote for that. that is not what i signed up. i want to vote for what in the plan makes sense and takes care of the needs of america. reporter:

chuck schumer bringing this up, knowing it was going to fail. it wasn't even clear until earlier this afternoon they were going to get manchin on board in the last few hours susan collins, republican of maine, saying that the rhetoric from democrats has been over the top. lisa murkowski also willing to buck her party, republican of alaska saying that this is a very partisan bill. i mean, this is the result of this as you have these republicans who voted to convict trump during impeachment, saying that this bill is garbage. >> well, i think one thing is clear. there is no version of a voting bill that republicans will support in this particular political climate. the question is should this version of the bill, the one that includes a lot of other things including anti-corruption efforts that even some democrats think are too broad, should that've been the thing that they decide to have a vote on? there could have been an opportunity to force this procedural vote on a piece of legislation, a version of this legislation that was designed to be more bipartisan in nature. and they decided not to do that, but i think it's also because they know that this isn't going anywher
