there were 29 men the night fitzgerald died, they all went down with them. about half of those guys were from ohio. the captain was from ottawa hills which is right here in toledo. it was a big deal especially in ohio and especially here in toledo. shipwrecks in the late 1800s and early 1900s were common, there were a lot of ships out there and we didn't have great weather capabilities. there were more ships, more traffic, and we were not real sure what was happening. we saw lots of shipwrecks. over the course of time, we estimate there was probably about 8000 shipwrecks across the great lakes. what makes the edmund fitzgerald a bit more interesting is the fact that it is 1975. by then there were no major shipwrecks for at least a decade. prior to that, any major shipwrecks was another decade it was not expected that something of this size could succumb to the weather we have. it really was unthinkable. one of the things i think people don't realize about the great lakes is we were innovators here also. what we are looking at here is the steering wheel from
