congressman josh gottheimer and congressman brian fitzpatrick are back to join me on this.t can you tell us? are you on board? >> thanks, chuck, for having us. as you probably know, about two weeks ago, the problem solver's caucus, we put out a package called building bridges, about $1.25 trillion over eight years on the physical infrastructure side. we have been working with our senate colleagues, including the ones you mentioned a second ago and work closely with them. we met this morning with sinema and portman. this builds on plans that are both very similar and we are eager to move the ball forward in a bipartisan way. >> congressman fitzpatrick, what's moving the ball forward? what does that look like now? >> moving the ball forward is good people on both sides of the aisle committed to making the most bipartisan issue we deal with, which is infrastructure, a bipartisan solution. josh and i mentioned our caucus has done its work. we got 75% threshold, which means we endorsed the definition and the scope. our good friends in the senate, they are addressing it. we are o

congressman gottheimer, i'll put this to you. caucus that's not supporting what's in this plan, this bipartisan plan on how to pay for this. you heard senator sanders, the white house also doesn't like what is effectively raising the gas tax. >> well, we put together a pretty significant list of paid fors, including closing the tax gap and repurposing some of the covid dollars and infrastructure bank and public/private partnerships and user fees. there's a lot on the table. we've been working closely with the white house, senate colleagues, democrats and republicans. i actually believe we have a good group together. there will be back and forth and we have to stay at the table. that's what you do in good negotiation. but the bottom line is just because a couple people in the party are against it, i have spoken to a lot of people in our caucus who are strongly supportive of doing something bipartisan and on the side of infrastructure that we can get done and move forward together with democrats and republicans. it's what the count

cap congressman josh gottheimer, tell us what's happening here.you be okay with? >> hey, becky. thanks for having me i would look at this slightly differently. first, very early in the process. we haven't seen any proposals about anything expect top line numbers. i see bernie sanders put out we haven't seen any proposals on the tax side from the senate obviously totals from the white house will come down significantly in any proposal. we should put that out there first. the second thing, the good news are the progressives are starting to talk about reinstating s.a.l.t. it's early to know the details it's about 8$80 billion a year t fully reinstate the deduction and make sure we get it back for states like new jersey, new york, connecticut, california and actually get tax cuts to people here who got hit so hard in 2017. so i'd say it's incredibly early in the process we know this is a middle class issue. the median income tax is $15,000 compared to places where it's 5$ $550 >>> if you say it's for the middle class, are you okay with them saying it

gottheimer: i'd be happy to. one of the biggest challenges that people don't realize of states like new jersey and new york and connecticut and california is how much we pay into the federal government from our -- that our taxpayers pay, and historically how we get back less in return than some of the other states in the country do like mississippi, for every $1 they send to the federal government, gets $4.38 back. alabama, i believe $4.32 back. the state of louisiana starts their budget every year with half coming from the federal government. states like jersey, we get back $6 -- 67 cents on the dollar. that means that we pay lots of money to washington and people like me are fighting to claw more back to jersey but we know that other states benefit more. when the tax -- when the tax hike bill passed in 2017, and the red states gutted the state level tax deduction and capping it at $10,000, what they did was shift actually even more of the tax burden over to blue states like ours and the red states benefited eve
