and you probably have heard the story of the african-american computers who worked at langley in the brilliantly told book hidden figures by margarita lee, which is also a movie. and in the bottom is a group from the armstrong flight research center and in both of these cases once ibm computers came in in the 60s almost all of these women were fired and this happened across the country. but it did not happen at the jet propulsion laboratory instead. it was the women who were trained there as the first computer programmers and they were the ones who worked on ibm's like this and ibm 1620 that the women affectionately nicknamed cora. and it is this group of women at jpl who write the very first programs that send american spacecraft to the moon and to the planets and they do it on cards like this. and in my research, i was really curious as to why this is why was jpl so different from many of these other nasa centers and what i found was that at most nasa centers? they were formed from military bases. and so that culture was very different than jpl which was formed by the suicide squad
