when i was nine years old i treated my old bicycle to an uncle for a 1912 remington typewriter. this is one of those square things about yay high and yale wide, weighing about 50 pounds. i got my dad to bring me a box of carbon paper. if i hit those keys as hard as i could i could make six copies of my home reported homegrown newspaper for my neighborhood. by then we lived in a camp with about 30 houses. all men worked in refining companies. it was a family-owned company in those days. it is not called exxon. it was bought by standard oil of new jersey. my dad and several of his brothers all worked for the company. we lift ten miles outside of texas on the middle of a big ranch, in the middle of one of the biggest oil fields in texas. i was the local reporter and publisher of about a weekly newspaper if i could manage it. and i made a successful business of it. back then it was a real popular christmas gift for kids. it was a little printing press you set rubber pipe on this thing. you could run them an awful lot quicker than i could type them. some kid would always get one of t
