that warner versus warner race confused the heck and of everybody in virginia. interesting thing our campaign came up with was a clever bumper sticker that simply said mark, not john. i was campaigning one day and i got out and someone looked at my car and saw the bumper sticker and said, excuse me, is not a biblical reference? [laughter] there was no divine intervention that year and at the end of a spirited but respectful campaign, the right warner won the race. and i will be forever grateful that afterwards, rather than holding the campaign against me as many would, john, who was already a towering institution in virginia politics, we built a friendship. that is who john was. a class act. and frankly a lot of fun to be around. but more than that, as already been mentioned, he was a leader of substance that delivered for virginia and his country for 40 years in the united states senate. admiral mullen has also indicated there was not a sailor, soldier, airman or marine anywhere in virginia or in the country who does not owe a debt of gratitude to john warner.
