the chairman of the reno sparks india colony in reno, nevada talks about the relationship between federal, state and tribal governments. >> many tribal governments have large land bases but here most of the tribes have small land bases most referred to as colonies, in california they're referred to as rancherias, a lot of colonies, they have a lot of status, there's no difference just that they're smaller. in 1917, even before that, when the pute and wash u people were in this valley here in reno sparks, this whole truckee meadow valley. they used to camp along the truckee river, there's historic camps along the river where their camps were basically old areas where they were 'em camped and back in 1917 there was a movement by some of the people, the towns people here to support indian reservation, because i didn't think they really wanted indians camped up at different locations, they kind of got in the way. so i think the idea was if you could put them in a certain place you could basically keep an eye on them neend where they're at and they would have a reservation so it was supported.

and so paul laxalt was born in 1922 here in reno, nevada at the saint mary's hospital. he grew up in carson city attended carson high school got his law degree and then for a short period of time in the early 50s served as the district attorney of ormsby county, which is now carson city. that was his first kind of instance of being in political office. from there. he kind of worked his way through the rungs of the political system in nevada becoming the lieutenant governor in 1962. became the governor in 1967. and that's kind of an important point in 1967 when he was running for governor. ronald reagan was also running for governor of california. two men had met in 1964 at a barry goldwater rally in california. where ronald reagan was speaking and obviously ronald reagan would have been notable to people in california at the time due to being in movies. so paul ax salt and ronald reagan as respective governors of their neighboring states, california and nevada one of their big initiatives that they work together on was was really the the conservation of the lake tahoe b

the reno justice department really at my behest was organized as a unified a.g. dag at the top with everybody reporting to the a.g. through the deputy a.g., and our staffs were largely unified.. attorney general reno had a vere small personal staff so i ran the front office staff with some excellent people, including merrick garland and seth waxman, and we had a fabulous group of people in that office. so i supervised all of the litigating divisions of the department of justice and all of the u.s. attorneys, although many u.s. attorneys thought they reported only to god, not to -- not to main justice but that's for another -- that's for another day. i also had direct oversight of thehe fbi, the dea, the marshal the bureau of prisons and in those days the immigration and naturalization, which now i think the current department of justice is happy that's over at the department of homeland security because it took up a disproportionate amount of time with notf a particular set of expertise within the department of justice. i had the role of also policy coordination.
